The George Liquor Program

Hey! Who knows who this guy is??

These are images from The George Liquor Program that I have been trying to get to you for years. It's my best prime-time show.

I want to test your knowledge of my crap...what can you tell me about these characters? Who knows their names? How many of you want to see this damn fine show about truth, ideals and the American way?

BTW, thanks again to Eric Bauza for digitizing the artwork and assembling the glorious splash page. He is also a great voice talent so if you have cartoon shows in production hire the goddamn genius! He does every voice.

And who are these fine bitches below?

George Liquor is one of my most favorite cartoon characters ever. I would love to see him in another series outside "Ren and Stimpy" or "The Goddamn George Liquor Program". It'd be great if the series was on DVD. No commercials. Also, do you still want to do the CG "Weekend Pussy Hunt" movie? For theatres maybe?

Mmm... is that Sodee Pop? My very first lust after a cartoon character came from her appearance with Jimmy in Cinemafantastique magazine.

I have a deep urge to go find it in my room back at the parents house, but I've got a feeling it would be a fruitless endeavor. I can only imagine how stuck together those pages are by now...

So, I guess my only real option is to SEE THIS SHOW ON THE AIR!

Good luck John.

Anonymous said...

Wait a second, the post cut off... You drawings were too... WHAT? Too adult? Although I did notice that Family Guy and The Simpsons has the most simplistic drawings and bland animation. Edginess is, to me, extremes. To me, Clampett is edgier than Family Guy in that respect, because Clampett pushed the envelope, and Family Guy has characters yak yak yakking about no-tang for 20 minutes. Yet people heap praise on Family Guy for being "edgy"

BTW John, check out this guy named Jaime Weinman's blog (no I'm not him)

Hey,John K!
I can't believe it's really you!
First of all: you really rule, man. Serious.
Second: I have all your Spumco flash cartoons in a disc somewhere. Was sad not to be able to see how some of them would end up, specially the George Liquor show. (Jimmy the idiot boy was great!).
Third: are you serious about making real episodes of George Liquor again?, jeez! I'd better start saving some money for that. You know, if it where something else I'd probably download it from eMule, but to see fine cartoons as yours... well, you don't see that often. It's a collector item, really (like Star Wars, or a Ghibli movie, wich I've got on DVD).
Well, It's glad to have you back in action.
I've got to send you an email in the future for an idea about a singing doodie. But for now, I'm happy to hear that you'll be drawing again.
Regards.

Love George, Jimmy and Sodee Pop! You should really have a link somewhere on this blog to some of the original shorts that used to be on Spumco.com. That would get some eyeballs to drop by and comment all over your blog.

Really, I can't believe that Cartoon Network hasn't been stalking you, begging you to let them air George Liquor on Adult Swim.

man oh man is this stuff good! I'd lay down my hard-earned dollars for this show! DVD, TV, don't matter.

Matthew Hunter said...

I think "adult" and "edgy" are confused all too often. I think what made Ren and Stimpy as popular as they were was that they had heart, they had personality. From what I saw of these other characters when they were in Flash toons a few years ago, they weren't near as appealing. You can only rely on "funny drawings", grossouts and fart jokes for so long, sooner or later you have to actually develop the personality of the characters. Why do the Simpsons and Family Guy work? Characters. Just a suggestion...

Mathew,

I totally agree with you.

The Flash cartoons were 2 minutes long, free and part of a longer story that would have had lots of patented Spumco "heart" had I been able to get a sponsor to pay for them.

Once we get them into a longer format like Ren and Stimpy they will have what you want.

They definitely have tons of personality which is always my #1 priority.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Don't hit me for this, but I have a suggestion if you do get a George Liquor show going. I think "The Goddamn George Liquor Program" flash toons would have been more interesting had they gotten a plot moving sooner...the first few were just random bacon jokes and stuff.

Now I'm not saying that they weren't funny, they just needed more to get it rolling along. Only in the last few episodes did the plot of Slab n' Ernie and stuff start to develope...

Sure, I’ll put my John A. Macdonald on this puppy if it’ll bring some of these characters to light. Hell, I’d buy processed poo if it was wrapped with these guys. Maybe you could even release the Hannah Barbara and Mighty Mouse stuff you worked on. Ah, dreams can come true. I got a bucket full of money and I’m itchin’ for more spumco goodness. (The bucket is actually from a garbage pail kids bubble gum so make whatever you’re selling affordable.)

Ah, those Catholic Girls are taking me to critical Mass.
If you had DVD direct stuff I'd go for that. I'm a starving artist but I'd go to costco for extra beans if it meant getting a little more color on the animation palette. There is such a narrow field of view in toons these days. We really deserve the chance to bring more to bat. Luckily the technology is available to make a few things not=as-crazy expensive as the cel and film days.
It's an opertunity for a brave new world... but the bankers are being old world pricks.
Anyway, you have my vote.

George Liquor, Jimmy the Idiot Boy, Sody Pop, Cigarettes the cat, Dirty Dog, Slab & Ernie, and the Bad Catholic School girls in the variety of limited capacity they have appeared over the years, have seemed like nothing short of brilliant and intriguing characters with equally interesting stories to tell. I would absolutely buy either a direct to DVD and/or tune in on a regular basis to watch a broadcast show if one or all of these characters were involved and done right.

I think anything John K. or Spumco related would garner major interest initially... and then unfortunately it just becomes a pissing match where we have to wait and see if the creative brilliance and groundbreaking spirit can outweigh the corporate meddling and bullshit long enough to build a loyal audience and following.

Keep fighting the good fight John, it is not in vain.

Btw: I was wondering...Did Frederator pass on your pitch for "Oh Yeah!" or pick it up... I loved that short video clip and accompanying artwork from your pitch that they posted on their blog a while back.

That's George Liquor and Jimmy the Idiot Boy. George is from Ren and Stimpy, and from the Spumco Flash cartoons from about 1996. He was also in the online comic. And of course I'd love to see a prime-time show featuring this character, and would love to see an animated straight-to-DVD movie with him.

I'm not too sure about the second load of characters, though.

I too think it's stupid that most "ADULT" shows have very crude styles while shows for kindergarteners are artistically a lot more sophisticated.

Anyway, George Liquor is the greatest because he's both scary and lovable. MAKE ME MAD OR I'M GONNA BE REALLY MAD!!! He's the ultimate AMERICAN. It's time for the executives to be REAL MEN even if they're ladies and put him on my TV.

Anonymous said...

John, I would defenetly buy a George Liquor DVD. I never had the chance to see any of the web toons when they were out, but I have heard much about the show. It is truly unfortunate that the characters remain in limbo and out of reach from fans like us.

I just recently saw a few episodes of Weekend Pussy Hunt somewhere on the internet, and damn, they were awesome! I wish I could have seen the entire finished cartoon...now I am left eternally in suspense. It would be great to see this and other unreleased Spumco 'toons along with George Liquor, like the Ranger Smith cartoons or the commercials you guys made.

WIth all the adult orientated cartoons on television these days (there seems to be a new one released every other week on Adult Swim) I cannot believe that John and his team are still without a show. After all, you guys were the pioneers years ago. So I'm with you all the way...bring on the funny!

George Liquor is without a doubt the greatest cartoon character ever created. A dvd would make life complete. It's been such a shame that he's only been featured in a couple of shorts and the comics. I still can't understand how anyone with a brain at these networks hasn't begged you for George. Oh wait... that's right no brains. Can't wait to see more drawings, everyone of them is so inspiring. I've drawn more in that last week since seeing your blog than I have in months. Thanks.

Mortimizer said...

"Hey! Who knows who this guy is?"

Is it Dick Cheney?

George was always my fave character you made (the star of Dog Show), along with Powdered Toastman (cling tenaciously to my buttocks).

To tell you the truth, when American Dad came out on Fox it reminded me of what a George Liquor TV show could have been first... an overly patriotic American spouting his crap down everyones throats (literally). Dad isn't half of what George could have done with that angle.

John, what networks would be suitable for The George Liqour Program anyway? Lots complained at APC being too gross, yet look at what Drawn Together has turned into on Comedy Central (sick and disturbing...ly funny). So I can only thing the problem is production costs, or just a lot of burnt bridges.

If APC cost 600k an ep I can understand why you are finding it so hard to get a network deal... all the popular cartoons these days are made for a lot less, so you have to make some sacrifices... maybe get a busload of budding talented apprentices that will work for free. (coming soon to NBC, John K.: The Apprentices)

Click my name to see a classic animated gif of George Liqour.

I've also downloaded and backed up all the web cartoons you guys did (The Goddamn George Liquor Program, Weekend Pussy Hunt, The Jetsons, Yogi and Boo Boo, etc).

I beg any network execs or anyone else who can put money into John's hands... give John the money to make the best cartoons he can and the rest will take care of itself. People will pay good money for great cartoons.

I am seriously into that red head schoolgirl on the left there.
That whole crappy looking adult cartoons theory is bullcrap. A few weeks back me and a friend were waiting around to see boo boo runs wild at 1, and we sat through all the crap before it. Those cartoons suck as it is, and when they're next to one of yours, they're absolutely shamed. Watching your animation after that shit was an epiphany, just watching a character walk, or point or look around, it was hilarious--and i just realized that's what animation should be. If it's not good like that, why bother even animating it. You're way too good for cartoon network, I can't believe they're not jumping you to make them shows.
I want some dvds!

John,
George Liquor is easily the funniest character you've ever created. It would be a shame if he never finds a home on network TV, or at least DVD.

Not only is he funny on his own, but he makes your other characters even funnier when he's onscreen with them. (I always thought he stole the show from Ren and Stimpy.)
You can't rest until he becomes a household name!

Thanks for opening my eyes so early on in my career, before I became "tainted" by the industry. Whether or not you realize it, I am forever grateful to have been, even a small part of the most creative studio around.

I'm almost 20 years old, and I've been watching Cartoons the entire time. One of the first things I remember vividly is Seeing "Stimpy's Big Day" with my mom, I didn't even know what the show was untill it first premiered! It's one of the only series my mother enjoys thats animated, and I was encouraged to watch it haha. I always remembered seeing George Liquor in the dog show episode, and wanting to see him in his own show. He was a fully developed character from the beggining! I KNOW a George Liquor show with all of its characters would do well, a John Kricfalusi show is really needed in the big mire of crap we have today for cartoons.

I would absolutely love to see The George Liquor Program! The only Spumco animation that I have seen lately is a few episodes of The Ripping Friends and Ren and Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon. Some other cartoons I would love to see are Weekend Pussy Hunt and Boo Boo Runs Wild.

From a huge cartoon fan,
Scott Jordan

P.S. Loved your "tidbits of poor taste" in the "Red" episodes of 2 Stupid Dogs!

you know john i have alot of respect for you even though i have never liked one of your cartoons.I think you have a great style and i think you kinda revived the animation industry but im really not into that ''gross out humor'' so i dont know how much i really care about this cartoon.I will say that the thought of a patriotic cartoon character does seem humorus so i will go ahead and give you the comment and wish you luck on getting it made.

i loved "the goddamn george liquor program" when it was on the old spumco.com, and the characters would be george liquor, jimmy the idiot boy, sodee pop, ernie, slab, and the catholic girls...

your blog is great i've been glued to it from the first post, and i'm amazed that you respond in the comments...

keep up the good work!

John -

First, thanks fer stoppin' by blog man. Glad ya dig my Jolie doodles! It was fun stuff. And sure, totally post whatever ya like!

And I'd be stupid NOT to buy my very own George Liquor DVD. Sign I think more people would be inclined to buy a DVD than fork over cash to a website/subscription cartoon feed. Regardless, there's no doubt it'll be big baby.

And ya know, someone mentioned it in this thread - Boo Boo Runs Wild has been airing weekly on Adult Swim recently. Were ratings so good the first time they aired it at 1 am that they did it again the next week? It would seem so. Man it would be great if Adult Swim saw your potential. Not just the George Liquor show - anything man. It makes all too much sense.

Adult Swim stuff isn't anything really well done. I think for the most part, anyone watching those cartoons just wants to laugh. And some of the shows are pretty funny, but nothing original has any sorta high production value. Regardless, some original material with real quality - it could be revolutionary. Like I said, "It'll be big baby"

Thanks again for stoppin' by and here's to 200 comments!

-bob.

I pledge huge amounts of demographic interest, vital core marketing feedback and cold hard cash to the John Krisfalusi cause. I want them all - George Liquor, Cigarettes the Cat (oh that Hep Cat!), Jimmy & Sodee - just keep expanding your wonderfully exaggerated art form and pushing your vision.

I’ll watch it mangled on TV, then go out and buy the uncut DVDs, I’ll plunge BIG dollars into related materials (comics, dolls, keychains, teapots, posters, jeans) and email, blog and link to all my internet friends. I’m jonesin’ man….

Hello Mr. John K.
I appreciate all the good advice on drawing and cartoon making. I was wondering about that Frederator cartoon you had pitched, they had a sample of it on their website. Was there any response to doing it or was it like the others you have talked about (everyone loves it but never goes with it).

I liked He-Hog a lot, a fantastic cartoon.

Do the executives care about "real" fan support? Obviously after gigantic DVD sales Family Guy got put back on the air, but that was really about money.

I want to see George Liquor on TV, I want to see him selling lunch meat during Fox Box Saturday morning "cartoons" (do they count as cartoons when they arn't funny or clever?) I want a George Liquor bottle opener, mug, and dietary supplement. I will pay money for all of them.

I have to admit that Man's Best Friend is my favorite Ren and Stimpy episode. I can watch it again and again. I would buy a George Liquor dvd in a heartbeat. I am already planning to double dip on the APC DVD when those also come in the everything box set at Christmas. So not only am I willing to buy this stuff once, but twice! I'm not the only one.

The world needs cartoons like these!

Duck Dodgers said...

John,

Sure thing I know who them characters are : they are George Liquor, one of my favorite characters ever, Jimmy the Lucky Idiot, Sody Pop, the Catholic School Girls and George's nephews.

I would pay the real cash to watch other cartoons with them characters!
I love them!!!

I would love to see released the final episodes of George Liquor and of Weekend P..Hunt !!
You ended both series without delivering the final punchline! Why?
Please answer!!!

John Park said...

JOHN PARK says Do it! I dont have any money yet I would gladly eat nothing but bread for a month if I could purchase George-y boy on dvd. Hell, I even spent ten dollars trying to get The Ripping Friends on dvd from amazon but never got it. Friggin amatuers sent me The Twilight Zone instead! Dissapointed. But that has nothing to do with this post. Bring George Liquor to the public and let America laugh!

Oh, J K. My heart! You drew a pug, but they tend to have pink eyes and a darker muzzle. Love it though, yer on track as ever.
Please explain why a nice dame like Soda Pop is with that wastoid Jimmy. Can you maybe do a comic where we see what's in it fer her?

rajesh said...

Walt Disney owned all of his characters after the whole Oswald thing.

I'm surprised you're still looking to sell your creations.

Why don't you just make a tiny short yourself and charge for cellphone and iPod downloads?

Duck Dodgers said...

John,

you wrote that you will post storylines from George Liquor cartoons.
Please, do also post artwork of the unfinished projects and other assorted goodies from this great show!

It was great and George is wonderful!

I also liked very much the beautiful girls you and your animators drew in the series.

And I would pay to see you direct a WB cartoon with a Bob Clampett-like insane and crazy Daffy Duck.

I was starting to wonder where George Liquor and Jimmy The Hapless Boy had gone off to. I would love to see a series...maybe on [adult swim]? Speaking of which, Boo Boo Runs Wild is brilliant and twisted...and I mean this in a very good way. Do you plan to make additional episodes of that as well, or was it just a one-off to whet our collective appetites and remind us why we missed you (as if the Ren & Stimpy DVDs weren't enough)?

Hi, Mr K., You are the best thing to happen to cartoons since Warner Brothers. Hearing you trying to get executive backing for George Liquor is like listening to Walt Disney trying to pitch Mickey Mouse. I would say you are probably in the league of Walt Disney and Warner Brothers and everything you decide to make should be on the air automatically. Good luck with George Liquor. Simon, Brisbane, Australia.

Jimmy The Idiot Boy is goddamn hillarious. I've got all the spumco "Comic Books", The scene where Jimmy's drooling while watching the lay-days walk by was great. And the whole dog getting the turd shot back up its butt and the look on its face.. I practically cried laughing at that one.

Also, concerning George Liquor, my favorite scene with him was in the Ren and Stimpy episode where he buys them as pets. The whole scene where he's making them attack him and Ren totally loses his shit and goes berserk, punching him and the slow motion of Liquor's face being pummeled. I'd never laughed so hard in my life at that, and the scene where he's crawling across the floor! John K, you're a damn comedic genius, nobody else makes cartoons as funny as you.

PS. Can you please bring the flash cartoons back. I had almost forgot about them and my cd with them is dead.

George Liquor is the mutant mindfuck version of obnoxious fetishistic uberpatriotism. Through virtue of his weirdness, he's the kind of right-winger I can really dig.

Also, I can see Jimmy the idiot boy doing a modern-day nod to "Private Snafu" in a GL show. Maybe George should get 'im to enlist and learn that boy a thing or two about fighting for our constitutional republic.

Dear John,

I to am looking to make a cartoon... but i dont have your pedigree... have you tried the Uk networks... BBC3, channel4 etc... they look like theyre giving money away for mediocre rubbish... im preety sure you could just send a pitch... or how about going to mipcom and bullschitching it up with the nobs?...ever thought about doing some stuff in 3D to cut costs... or is that dirty speak.. i have a similar nemesis in the form of motion capture. anywho, good luck with it all, my spumco comic is all wet from manwee on the sody bits... can i get a replacement?.

G'day John K. (still got a R&S t-shirt you signed for me in Melbourne(pron. Mel-bun) about 10 years ago)
God damn I wanna see George Liqour and Jimmy the idiot boy again soooo bad! I remember when he was on the Ripping Friends, halarious! It's hard to come across your recent work down unda, we generally get it 2 or 3 years later, and now it's only on pay telly. Anything as sick and twisted as Ren & Stimpy Adult Party will be welcomed in Oz with open arms - well at least by me, don't think anyone in this bloody country cares about cartoons or animation, so conservative and run by bloody graphic desingers who think they can draw! Hey I bet they'd make great adult cartoons then ay? I'm craving for some good detailed old fashioned animation, which you are the master of! I still can't beleive you have a blog like this, it's bonzer to read about how you do things and want input for new shows. Keep em' comin, they're an inspiration, as you are all these years later. (and I really do talk like I type)
Hoo Roo! (oz for bye)
p.s Have ever thought of a making cartoon themed in Aus-stray-lia? Or even just an episode where George Liqour comes over here and has an adventure with some red-neck (we call them bogan's) Oss-ies? Now that's something I'd like to see!!!

BrianB said...

Btw John, can we get whatever you guys completed for Spike tv on DVD as well? They didn't give the audience a chance to realize it was back on before taking it off again. With solid R&S dvd sales already, I don't see why not. Considering everything else ever created for TV is on dvd.

Anonymous said...

Dear John K.,

I wish I didn't have to say this, but you are the best animator in the entire world. I would feel privelaged to watch any of your work in whatever form it may take. Please please please corporations and people that make shit happen let John K. rule the animation scene once again! Oh and as for buying DVD's of John K. stuff I would totally get 20 copies because I have friends annd family who will love it all just as much as I will!

Cheers in Advance

MehmetSaygin said...

Yes, yes, yes! I want that DVD!

Talia said...

OMG, please, for the love of god. This needs to be on the air! We need more good animation around, and your previous work is what got me into animation.
I could rant and rave more about how awesome this is, but I feel the work speaks for itself.
There is an audience out there for this, I know at least a dozen people who'd think this rocks, and no doubt there's millions more.

Hey, I just found out about this blog a few minutes ago. I'm someone who has practically given up on TV, but just earlier today I was thinking that those early Ren and Stimpy cartoons are one of the few shows that still hold up. I would love to see more work from you guys and I look forward to the Adult Party Cartoon DVD if that's ever coming out. Spumco, Pixar, and Studio Ghibli are just about the only people that know how to actually animate anything these days (as opposed to just creating lifeless talking drawings). And this ends my ass-kissing.
