I can't think of any controversy to stir up today so you'll have to satisfy yourself with envying the natural beauty of these great stars.

I gotta run down to a TV Land shoot-it's about the most popular catch phrases on TV in the last few years I think...

I'll find some crap later to stir up the pot again.

Buy some shirts and underpants!

As soon as I realised it was Paris, I laughed out loud. That was GREAT! You draw genius cartoons like it's the fashionable thing to do. Good stuff, John!

That last Jessica was scary!

I have a question for you about character development. When I was looking at yesterday's blog I started wondering how you go about developing your characters? Do you get the ideas from reference like with Ren or do you build them to suit a story line? Do you have a personality trait that you build a character around or have you drawn a character that you just like the way it looks and then try to incorporate it into a story by giving it a fitting personality?

I've always been led to believe that a character takes months or years to develop like with Bugs but how do you go about development? Might make for a good post.

Oh bravo. I hate Jessica Simpson so much, cuz the boyfriend always used to cream his pants about her. I know she has a nice body and everything, but I just think she's a plain type of pretty. Like, "here comes the token blonde girl" Barbie type. As if God wanted to make something pretty, and did, but wasn't feeling creative that day to put any flavor in. Ya dig? Probably not, everyone thinks I'm insane on that subject.

Have you ever experimented with Flash and Photoshop ?

I do it now a days.

Would you like to see my current flash film when it's done ?

I'm entering it for my high school film festival.

Yeah, they've been doing that since the mid 80's or so. I believe a man named Rick Gehr did the editting. But, let's not tar & feather this man. The original parent groups wanted to ban the Looney Tunes altogether. So, in order to keep them on the airwaves, the compromise was to edit out the "questionable" scenes. Oh well, screw those parent groups and their Censor Monkey ways. We've got uncensored VHS tapes and DVDs to enjoy.

Also, great Jessica Simpson pics. I also hate her. What talent does she really have besides looking like a super model and/or sounding like an idiot? These caricatures are well deserved.

Hey John K.

How many takes did you do with your voice in the Ren Seeks Help cartoon? Mainly in the scene where Mr.Hores snaps and tell's Ren he's F##KIN CRAZY. I love the line where Mr.Hores sez "you crazy son of a Bitch I'm gonna beat the livin Hell out of you!" That episode had the Best acting ever. Can't wait for the DVD to come out.

Hope you don't mind me askin ya this but do you like the early Pink Panther cartoons or the Chuck Jones Grinch?

Adam B said...

Hi John
How do you get the inked look to your drawings in the Lost Episodes?-like in Naked Beach Frenzy. On MOTLOS they said that the drawings are all done on pencil and paper and then scanned into a computer, if this is true does the clean-up artist aim to get that inked look -the thick and thin line, for the final drawing while they are working in pencil? And what is your opinion of drawing and animating directly in Flash with a Wacom tablet?

JohnK said...

>>Hope you don't mind me askin ya this but do you like the early Pink Panther cartoons or the Chuck Jones Grinch?

I liked the Grinch when I was a kid. Never was much on the Pink Panther or any Friz cartoons for that matter-least of all his limited animation.

JohnK said...

>>How do you get the inked look to your drawings in the Lost Episodes?-like in Naked Beach Frenzy.

You can do it in pencil or with bendable tip markers. But you have to know where to make the lines thick and where to make 'em thin and when to taper them. It's almost a science.

>>And what is your opinion of drawing and animating directly in Flash with a Wacom tablet?

I'm not good at it but many artists are. Our Weird Al video was done like that.

Hey, hope you had fun at the TVLand shoot - Nice stills from Piggy Bank, if you scroll up and down real fast, it's like watching a digital zoetrope.
I was watching the beginning of Tex Avery's All This And Rabbit Stew and noticed that the way the hunter shuffled seemed all too familiar - in Fire Dogs Ren and Stimpy in the opening sequence are dragging themselves the same way! Nice affecting tribute to a long forgotten classic! Was that subliminal, accidental or deliberate ...?

Hey, John K. I know that in 2004, the 'Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures' episode "Mighty's Benefit Plan" (a.k.a. "Elwy and the Tree Weasels") was shown at your in-person tribute festival, and that the episode was shown with scenes that were animated but never shown on television. I just really want to know if any other episodes of Mighty Mouse had scenes that were animated but never shown on TV? Thank you very much in advance.

anyone catch the latest Spumco rip-off to get green lighted and TV?

It's called My Gym Partner's a Monkey

http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/tv_shows/gympartner/

Now if only a real Spumco show can get on TV...

Gabriel said...

The monkey actually looks nice. I don't like the kid though.

Anonymous said...

If you get the chance to see the show, you can tell the R&S influenced is huge.

Maybe some old Spumco guys worked on it, that is the only way to justify it, since is is extremely blatant.

Anonymous said...

"Wilderness Adventure"? It looks like Chris Reccardi, or maybe Mike Fontanelli's line.

$100 minimum bid? Greedy! ; )

JohnK said...

>>"Wilderness Adventure"? It looks like Chris Reccardi, or maybe Mike Fontanelli's line.

It's Mike Kim.

The cartoon was never made. The drawings are from the Spumco school. I was teaching layout artists how to interpret storyboard drawings without toning them down, while still leaving space in the scene for all the action to take place- Not an easy task.

JohnK said...

Hi Andrea!

Those are great. I hate to ask, but could you do more from Scaredy Cat? There are more takes-I remember one of Sylvester looking right and jumping in the air-almost horizontally. It's on screen for just a few frames.

And any other cool drawings and acting would be great.

It's an amazing cartoon that I'd love to write about.

Do you also have the remake?

John Pannozzi said...

Hey, John K., could you answered the question in my earlier post, please?

Yep, John..I will post more stuff from that cartoon ...and from the remake too.....but I cannot find the one where Sylvester looks right and jumps in the air....

Just peaked at the site. It's more a rip-off of Powerpuff Girls and their ilk, except it's even flatter, and more "zany". (Feh.)

That monkey totally sucks. He makes Mojo Jojo look good. And why, why, WHY must they continue to attire characters in backwards baseball caps?? What, no skateboard?? No "Risky Business" Ray-Bans??!! I mean, come on, we have to have all three so that everyone will know for sure that he is a "cool" monkey. Because we're all completely stupid. I pray the monkey says "Awesome!" now and then. Or he could say "Burn!", or "Get a life!". Whatever.

"Whatever"! That's another good one!

Those somewhat dimensional, shaded backgrounds are okay, but they're a direct lift, and they only serve to emphasize the characters' flatness. I think somebody at Colorforms should sue them.

(BTW, I like Powerpuff Girls et al. The stories are funny, and they do a lot with a little.)

No, no, You really have to watch one show, to see what I mean.

They even have gross out painted close ups and everything. At least that part looks good, teh artists who painted them is pretty good, but you just know where they got that idea from.

The character designs and acting is terrible of course, but it is very , very, very clear that they are ripping off John K, or at least trying to.

I just don't understand how the heck these shows get green lighted, but we can't get a real Spumco cartoon on the air?

Where is the justice in this world?

P.C. Unfunny said...

Hey John, I just got the Preston Blair book in the mail and it's great. Unfortunetly,it dose not not give very good "how to draw" lessons but it is great in explaining animation.I also have a question for you,I found on the IMDB that Ren's maniacal cackle in the original Ren and Stimpy was done by a guy named Pierre DeCelle. Out of curiosity, can you tell me a little about him ?

JohnK said...

>>Unfortunetly,it dose not not give very good "how to draw" lessons but it is great in explaining animation.

Umm... about 75% of the book teaches you how to draw.

Maybe you have a different book. The grey one with the elephants?

You need the yellow one with the rabbit and goose on the cover.

I have the re-print, the one with the squirrels. The book is definetly the same,it has the original cover on the inside. It dose give you how to draw lessons but I whould have prefered a little more depth to that part.

randi said...

No, no, You really have to watch one show, to see what I mean.

Do I have to?? Ugh. I didn't mean to imply that that monkey gym class show wasn't a Spümcø rip-off, just that it's more like fourth-generation: R&S --->Powerpuff/Dexter--->Fairly Oddparents--->Monkey Gym Class Show. Or is FO also done by that guy Genndy Something-or-other? (Who, again, I admire.)

They even have gross out painted close ups and everything.

Well, yeah, total ripoff-itude there. Though I don't blame them, since those stills are so goddamned funny that I still laugh at them after all these years. I'd be sorely tempted to try my hand at a few of them if I were making a cartoon. Then I'd slap myself.
