Lost Episodes of Ren and Stimpy - sneak previews

HEY FOLKS! Make sure you email a link to this post to every person in the world so that they can all see clips from new Ren and Stimpy cartoons!

Here's a scene from Altruists that's just plain silly.

We originally planned to do this scene as a takeoff on Game shows, with the announcer yelling all the prizes to the widow. I was eating breakfast with Eric Bauza and Mike Kerr as we were coming up with gags, and all of a sudden after each time Eric yelled what the prize was, I whispered how much it cost. We died laughing. I don't know why. It makes no sense but we decided to put it in the cartoon, and the more I whispered the more perverted it started to sound.

Buy the DVD and enjoy all the weirdness in the privacy of your own home. Don't forget to close the curtains!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F9T700/002-6127252-8652841?v=glance&n=130

I'm gonna post a few clips throughout the day, so keep coming back to check!

That clip is just a sample of the many character based scenes from the new Ren and Stimpys. I like to have scenes in my stories that just kind of invite you in to spy on Ren and Stimpy's private moments-to let you know what they are really like. A bit of voyeurism, you know?

Then when the gross, surreal or outrageous stuff happens, it has more effect because it seems like it's happening to real people - or beasts anyway.

Here's a tender scene just before Stimpy gives birth. BTW,Stimpy's Pregnant is another cartoon first-the first ever live birth in cartoons and the moment will be on screen too, but you'll have to wait till the DVD comes out to see that.

More to come...if you beg me.

INTERESTING MUSICAL FACT ABOUT SPUMCO: If you pay attention to these clips you might notice that the actions go to the music. I got that from Bob Clampett. He told me that since the beginning of sound cartoons, every animator timed everything to musical beats. That way the musician had an easy time scoring the cartoons afterwards.

Clampett though, always wanted to decide on the music BEFORE he started animating, so he would show his storyboards to Carl Stalling who would play the piano as Bob acted out the scenes and they would work out whatever music they both thought would put the gags and story over best.
Stalling wrote the music out on bar sheets, and under the notation Bob would write what actions were happening in the cartoon.

He would then take the timing notes and transfer them to animation exposure sheets, so the animators would animate the scenes to the music.

This makes Clampett's cartoons feel very diferent from the other directors' cartoons. Even his non-musicals are musical.Clampett's cartoons have a swinging upbeat feeling so even during what could merely be exposition scenes, you feel good and just enjoy the ride. Take a look at "Wabbit Twouble" as a great example.

All the other directors wrote their timing to beats, but unless they were actually doing a musical-like Rhapsody in Rivets (Freleng) or Rabbit Of Seville (Jones) they didn't usually know beforehand what the music would be.

Clampett (and this is what I love about him) used every creative tool at his disposal to make our cartoon viewing experience a richer pleasure.

All the new Ren and Stimpys and many of the originals are timed to music before they are ever animated. We pick the music that we think sets the mood and pace for the scenes and then cut our storyboards in an animatic to that music.

PRE-ORDER IT NOW and get this nifty card signed to you!
(well, signed to you after you sign it! It comes with the set)

Whats really good about Ren and Stimpy Jokes is their timing, or how long they take. They're never on screen to long, or to little, and they aren't obscured by other things like in some shows I've seen. This clip is a good example of those things! Mr. Kricfalusi, I looked up the special features for the dvd set containing the Adult Party Cartoon as they were currently listed, and I did not see any mention of commentaries. Are there going to be any? My friends and I love the ones on the first 3 sets, and they helped us figure out where some of the ideas came from, they are a great thing to have on DVDs!

Oh my god, this is amazing. The bit where Stimpy is on his head and reverses himself made me LULZ.

Evan said...

John voices Ren again, and I must say, he does it now better than ever. It took a little getting used to, because he does it a little differently, but now I love it.

John, you should do a post about your theories on sound design -- I've always noticed about R&S cartoons that not only are all of the foley effects way out there-sometimes the sounds have almost nothing in common with what's on screen (genius)-but also your use of music would be something really interesting to read about -- I noticed a few second of the music used in that dancing excerpt you posted earlier that used that Bett Boop music (was it the tiger rag?), anyway keep up the excelllent posting, but man do one about sound!

jorge garrido said...

whoah! ren sounds WEIRD! Maybe it's cuz I finihsed rewatching space madness and the great outdoors yesterday and I've been quoting some meorable lines.

Ren was voiced by Billy West in The Great Outdoors. That probably explains why his voice sounds weird to you in this clip.

Man, I haven't seen Ren and Stimpy in a loooong time. That was excellent! The whole part where Stimpy is on his head and flips around was pure genius. Hilarious stuff!

I thought the bit with Stimpy upside down and all of his body parts rearranging was pretty funny. A lot of the rest was just weird, like the thing with the tongue. I'd like to see the whole thing now though.

The Butcher said...

Oh, and I recently saw Fire Dogs 2 Part 2 and the scene where they're trying to flush Ralph Bakshi's turd down the toilet before his date gets there is very, very funny. I also really loved the part where he flips out in his sleep and chases Ren and Stimpy around the room with a fire axe. Pure loony goodness.

I don't know man, that seemed pretty fucking gay to me...Sense when did every fucking joke with Ren and Stimpy have to revolve around homosexual induendos? It's just a little too much for me I think, even though it looks amazing.

No way, that was a nod to the fleischers! Sort of like Betty's toes in Mysterious Mose, except it was naughty.

Ren's voice sounds awesome! He sounds like he should sound:like John K.!

I didn't see any specifically gay innuendo in that clip. It wouldn't be the first time a cartoon had made a gay joke though, I don't see why everyone is so afraid of these.

Shawn said...

HOOOLY CRAP! I'm laughing my ass off! I can hardly contain myself. My favorite part was when Stimpy was upside down, and his features all switched themselves until he appeared rightside up. When this DVD comes out, it's gonna be my best friend. I'll take it out to dinner, give it noogies, call it insulting-all-in-good-fun buddy names (like "shitass"). Shawn said...

Hey, John!
You know what I love the most about your cartoons? All your stories are about the CHARACTERS. So many other cartoons try to be crazy by using the zaniest plots they can think of, or making objects frustrate a character. I can't stand Donald Duck or Goofy cartoons because they spend the whole cartoon battling inanimate objects (like a bed or a water faucet). Those cartoons annoy the hell outta me. But YOUR characters just act off eachother, and they're funny. I think if you have good characters, they don't need really crazy storylines to be funny. Just put them in any situation and let their personalities do all the work.

Josh "Just What the Doctor Ordered" Heisie said...

Ren sounds far throaty and evil in the new episodes...but I love it. The colors, the backgrounds and most everything are awesome.

I really prefer the realistic, moody backgrounds of APC to the old ones, although I love them both.

why don't you? It's one of the reasons I put it up-so you could how many jokes and how many different kinds of jokes we cram into our cartoons.

Many people today have been conditioned to only expect one kind of joke- a verbal sarcastic remark.

I like a good mix-another reason why I love old cartoons, because they work on so many levels-the characters act funny, they say funny things, they look funny, they do funny stuff, the music is great, the voices are funny, etc.

lyris said...

Take it with a pinch of salt (I'm not sure where I heard it) but the reason for Ren's voice sounding a little bit deeper is due to the recording method.

I heard that the original R&S shows were recorded on analog tape and Ren's voice was pitched up slightly? But the pitching-up is harder to do on today's digital audio so it was left alone. Maybe John could fill us in.

Wow, July will be a great month for DVD releases in the States - at least for me. Doctor Who 2K4, 'Allo 'Allo Series 5, and Ren and Stimpy!

The first clip was really funny. Does anyone know which epi that was from? The second clip was okay. The part about the sign was funny.

Eric Bauza did a fantastic job with Stimpy's voice. I also like the new voice for Ren - it sounds a little more sinister to me.

One of the things that always gobsmacked me about old-skewl Ren & Stimpy was the 50s style background music. That was to the ears what the image of J.R. "Bob" Dobbs was to the eyes. Much of the atmosphere of R&S is in that music.

Anonymous said...

Yeah I don't get what everyone's saying about ren's voice??? That's the same ren voice I heard John do in the old cartoons, sounds exactly the same if you ask me...TONS of character to it too!

Nice post, John. By way of backing you up here's a copy of a comment I made to Thad on his site.

Clampett was by far the best of all the Warners directors.

1) Music was an integral part of his cartoons and wasn't just added on as an afterthought, as it was in other directors' cartoons.

Music is the queen of the arts. It has an intuitive appeal that no other art form can duplicate. Clampett aimed to make every element in his films "musical", even the visuals.

2) The animation in his cartoons is often poetic rather than literal. How someone opens the door is just as important as why they open it.

3) His cartoons are exuberant. They seem to say, "Isn't it great to be alive!?" I can't think of a more profound message.

4) Almost everything he did had guts, street smarts and magic. Chuck had formulas, Bob had charisma.

5) Bob made film, not just animated stories. Film happens when all the elements come together into a whole that's greater than the sum of the parts.

6) Bob loved cartooning and animation. He allowed talented animators more freedom than any other Warners director.

7) Bob was a great human being with a great heart. It shows in his cartoons.

I'm a huge fan of Chuck and Tex but Bob was better, by a wide margin.

By the way, many thanks to Thad for all the great stuff he's posted lately.

Wow. John Kricfalusi, thank you sooo much for that musical fact. I've been wanting to ask a question in relation to what you posted for a while now, but I feel like my mind has just been read. So, thank you. I was always amused with the choice of classical pieces in certain Ren & Stimpy scenes to create the mood, one great example being in Stimpy's Invention, when Mussorgsky's 'Night on the Bare Mountain' was played during the scene where Stimpty puts the Happy Helmet on Ren. I think what was so entertaining about that was the use of this dark-toned piece during a scene that deals with finding happiness. Hehehe. It lets you know that something's going to go wrong.

Anyways, thank you again. I might ask a music-related question in the near future if I'm brave enough.

Hmm... the music is mixed too loud I think. I find it distracting while in the old cartoons it had a more subtle way of setting the mood. The voices sound real compressed like they're competing to be heard. No sir, I don't like it.

The pacing and all the jokes are just friggin' weird too. It's a shame because the quality of the animation is jaw-dropping. It's lightyears beyond the original series which itself seemed to push the limits of what you could accomplished within the constraints of a TV program.

I also dislike the computerized cel "painting", but I'm sure it saves boatloads of time and money so that I can live with.

>>Hmm... the music is mixed too loud I think. I find it distracting while in the old cartoons it had a more subtle way of setting the mood. The voices sound real compressed<

...um...you're listening to it on your computer from youtube. Everything is super compressed. Plus all sound is unfortunately digital today which is not as clean or rich as analog, so even the DVDs of the original cartoons you have don't sound like they used to.

Sorry about that-that's technology today-they are mixed fine though, you'll be able to hear everything on the DVDs.

hahaha, works for me.

John, i had a question about Ren... I remember the original model sheets, and a lot of Season 1, that Ren has a tail. What happened to his tail??

Nico said...

also, just to point out-

very Clampett-esque, how in particular, the size of Ren's ears change depending on his mood. I remember in APC and in Seasons 1 and 2, where his ears are HUGE when he's happy... and then in the "Poosh, Steempy, poosh" shot of Stimpy's Pregnant, he has little hamster ears! that's great.

Shawn said...

I have a CD called "Music for TV Dinners". It's all happy dinner music from the 1950's. Most of the songs on that CD were used in the original Ren and Stimpy cartoons. I always listen to that CD when I'm drawing, or when I'm in a Spumco kinda mood.

P.S. Hey, John. I just pre-ordered the DVD set! Now I won't be able to sleep.

For some reason, the Altruist clip at the top wasn't working for me. But I did manage to see the other two. Great stuff. I especially enjoyed Stimpy's tongue getting cozy with Ren's blackjack. Gay joke / schmay joke. Funny is funny no matter what. Oh yeah, and the part where Stimpy went from upsidedown to rightsideup in that psychodelic way was brilliant. I may have to use/steal that sometime for any upcoming projects of mine. :)

One thing I didn't like was Ren hitting Stimpy with the blackjack. It just looked like Ren just merely rubbed it on Stimpy's face and therefore dulled any impact it could have had. Ren could have hit Stimpy a good 4 or 5 times (each time with a juicy sound effect) in the time it took for Ren to do that once. But, that's the only problem I had. The rest is brilliant as usual.

Hi Nico,

during the pilot, I animated a lot of the scenes and I had a terrible time trying to get the tail to work right, so I gave up and stopped drawing it.

BTW, would anyone want to see some of my own animation from the cartoons/ Every couple years there's a scene that I picture so specifically in my mind that I end up just doing it myself-even though I don't really know how to animate.

I would need someone to help me edit the scenes out and digitize them though.

Nico said...

indeed, even when there IS a gay joke, it's friggen funny. It's all over the place in Looney Tunes. look at Elmer's reaction in Clampett's "Wabbit Twouble" when Bugs is pretending to be the bear, then kisses him.

And thanks for the compliments, Eddie. I'm posting a bunch of Tom & Jerry stuff tonight, a Marty Taras at Famous salute tomorrow, and a bunch of Fox & Crow stuff Thursday. I heard that, too, but then I watched John K on the Stern show on youtube and he did Ren saying "OHHHH, what I'm going to do to you!" It sounded exactly like the John K Ren on the show, and then Billy did his version which was good too. I think Ren sounds more like Kirk than Peter now.

John, question:

I wanna pre-order the Lost Episodes, but I also want the other R&S eps on DVD, and if I hold out for the Ultimate set, I'll get all epsidoes ever, a bunch of extras and nifty packaging, plus they'll actually be uncut! THE PROBLEM IS that if they're uncut the potential commentaries will be different, and I really want to hear the commentaries and see the exras from the other DVD's. I read reviews of the season sets and it mentioned that the commentators would comment when a commercial break or a an obvious cut would happenen, generating an awkawrd or uncomfortable moment. I LOVE THAT KIND OF THING and want to hear it.

Ok, so sum up, I don't want cut episodes, but I want the current season set's special features. My question is: Will they be on the ultimate set, or wil the extras on the ultimate set be brand new?

If they're different I'd better just but the season sets now, pre-order the lost episodes, and wait and see about the ultimate.

>>I loved it when R+S would use "March of the Sugar Plum Ferries." It always came in at the perfect time, and it would add this odd feeling to whatever was happening. Great Outdoors is a perfect example.

I love that episode! Out of the maybe 6 R&S eps I've seen that's in my top 20, 10 at least!

Especially the cowboy scene.

>> Ren was voiced by Billy West in The Great Outdoors. That probably explains why his voice sounds weird to you in this clip.

No, it sounds different than the way John did the voice originally. Space Madness was different. John did a Mel Blanc.

>>I bet he loves South Park which is full of homo jokes.
I do too, but not for the gay jokes. I always thought gay jokes were funny but actualy homosexuality bugs me. If Ren is gay with Stimpy in one episode, it's ok becasue it's a cartoon and sometimes they're homeless and sometimes they're schoolboys and sometimes they're human and sometimes they're animals.

I had a few ideas for R&S cartoons can they're all inconsistent.

Good Christ those clips were great. I think it will take me til morning to even begin to digest all of the great stuff that was crammed into just those few short moments from each episode.

It's a shame that these never made it to air, as it seems like from what little I have seen here, that these cartoons were far superior in almost every aspect to all of the other APC episodes that made it to air. I can only imagine how much better they might have gotten if a second season was ordered too.

Only trouble is I am really torn when it comes to buying this set, since I don't have a tone of extra cash, I already own seasons 1 through 3 and a half-ish on dvd, and I would enjoy having that ultimate set hmmmmm. what to do what to do.

What exactly is contained on this lost episodes dvd - the amazon description doesn't give a full listing from what I can see. And likewise what is supposed to be on the Ultimate set.

I'm one of your biggest fans. My favorite episode of Ren & Stimpy is the one where Stimpy has his first fart. I like it at the beginning when he says "this here's a true story that we just made up!"

Thanks for the laughs!!

On Amazon some guy says that Altruists, Naked Beach Frenzy and Stimpy's pregnant are all an hour long. Is that right? Are they a two-parter like the Fire Dogs episode?

Rens sensative and nurturing voice while talking to Stimpson during childbirth is hillarious. its a rare glimpse a his compassionate side. I love the subtle vocal inflections he uses.

it's just not done anywhere else. It's not just the expressions and movements that give these characters so much life, its the superb voice acting as well.

I've always loved in R+S when it cuts to an incredibly detailed close-up of a character like the Fire Cheif in FD pt.2, or like the hillarious stance of mr. horse in rubble nipple salesman (when he opens his door) and so many more. it never, ever, ever gets old. these shots always KICK ASS.

Did Spumco invent this? Is that an old Clampett trick? when was the first time you decided to do this?

I think of that as the trademark John K or Ren and Stimpy shot.

I laughed myself silly at the whispered prices in Altruists clip, so there must be some mysterious funny going on. Priceless!
Is the headless boy a Jimmy The Idiot Boy substitute? It's a great character from the mov clips and jpegs I've seen so far on APC website.
I've never seen a cartoon woman hold her breasts so much (not even in a Bakshi cartoon!) and turn me on. I need a date - real bad! Ha-Ha! Good job!

kevin, the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies was for me most memorably used in Ren's Toothache. The creepy old guy flew through the window to take Ren's nerve endings, and as he places the twitching nerve endings on his neck, Sugar Plum Fairies plays backwards. It was one of the most simultaneously hilarious and eerie moments in cartoon scoring.

Alright after a little digging around online it "seems" like the Ultimate DVD set will be a re-package of all of the previously released dvds (including the lost episodes), but with the possibility of some different extras, and possible some of the episodes that appeared on the first run dvd sets might have some of the cuts restored. But it also seems like the release of the Ultimate set is somewhat dependent on the sales of the lost episodes dvd?

Is this accurate John?

If so, I will definitely be ordering the Lost episodes DVD since I already own the first two R&S sets and don't care all that much about seasons "5 and some more of 4".

Hi John,

living in Germany, I had unfortunately not the chance to watch the APC episodes and judging from the great clips you have posted here, it´s really a crime that your work has been prevented from being released to a bigger audience.

So a big "HOORAY!" to you for this DVD release, which finally enables me to obtain and appreciate your work.

As much as I appreciate your great Blog, with your sophisticated and interesting insights on the art of animation. For the hope that your knowledge and ideas will spread around into the people´s heads, laying the groundwork for the renaissance of classic animation.

Your fan from Germany

I want to do voices for you. At 40, I'm only now getting the courage up to sign with an agency (Headshots next week), and although I have been doing a lot of independant stuff (Public access sketch comedy series and improv troups), I've yet to stick my neck out and really try to get work professionally. I believe I have what it takes to not only fill in on any existing characters, but also to create voices for new characters as well.

The fact is, I love your stuff, and I am willing to work cheap.

I know you're just cringing right now, thinking, "Oh crap, another one's squeaking its way out of the woodwork." Hell, I'm thinking that myself, but right now, I am in a cubicle, taking calls from morons who can't operate their computers, and I'm thinking to myself, "Dear, God, I'm hungry for a bullet! A little paprika, some garlic powder..." Y'know, that kinda stuff.

If you are interested at all, head to You Tube and look up Video Difficulties. A bunch of our stuff is up there. I'm the one with the shiny pate.

bitwize said...

There are little continuity errors in some of these, like after Stimpy morphs himself from upside-down to rightside-up, he kicks his gloves off. Yet when the camera angle changes his gloves are back on.

There's one in "Dog Show": in one scene Ren's tail is bobbed off, and a few scenes later he is shown wagging a full-length tail.

I can't help but think these are done deliberately, that they are not unintentional mistakes. And that just makes these cartoons all the more awesome.

Hey John K.

I know that you like Beavis & Butthead. I love that cartoon too. But if you remember this show what did you think of the MTV cartoon The Brothers GRUNT? The show was created by Danny Antonucci and it lasted from 1994 to 1995. The show was gross and funny. If you remember The Brothers GRUNT what did you think of it? When I was a kid my Biggest cartoon influences were Ren & Stimpy, Beavis & Butthead, Rocko's Modern Life, The Brothers GRUNT and of corse Tex Averys MGM cartoons. I still love them all to this day. But anyway I am really looking forward to the NEW R & S Lost Episodes DVD. This will really be the biggest DVD release of the year! Ren & Stimpy is the BEST CARTOON EVER!

Holy crap! How does Spike not air this!?? That was great. Full of originality and skill. I especially liked the game show parody w/ whispers(grabbing the breast/heart was a great touch), Mr Horse's "oh OH! OH oH!", and the nurse's design. So hard to find original or creative looking designs anymore.

Anyway, every second of these are filled with touches and quality though. Definitely a must buy.

Also, anyone know how the other Ren and Stimpy dvd's were outside volume 1? I heard there was both John and Games animation were doing commentaries on them. Did they even try to defend themselves?

"I don't know man, that seemed pretty fucking gay to me...Sense when did every fucking joke with Ren and Stimpy have to revolve around homosexual induendos?"

Wrong, dumbass. But of course it seemed gay to YOU. Everything looks "gay" to those who are in denial about their own sexuality. Not that there's anything wrong with that. :P

Well, there normally wouldn't be. But when you have to insult these episodes because you like to look so hard to find things that are or aren't "gay", then you are nothing more than a idiot, and a fool with the brain capacity of a network censor.

Moreover, if that's really what you think... then you have some serious problems that over-analyzing a cartoon is NOT going to fix. What you need to do is start analyzing your own life and what is wrong with your bizarre fixations, rather than look to project them on cartoon characters, especially if the things you search so hard to find are there for the sake of the STORY of the cartoon. Duhh.

So yeah.. it's me again. Sorry.
Not trying to start anything. But it's just that when people say stupid things, they deserve to be set straight and be be told it like it is. I get pissed off when people can't use common sense when making a dumb statement.

If someone has to use the words "Pretty fucking gay" to describe this, than obviously they have some serious self-analyzing and growing up to do. Bottom line.

My effort is not to flame. Just to say "If you can't say something positive (and intellgent) about the things on this blog, than don't say anything AT ALL."

Yet, it's surprising how some people can't follow that basic courtosy STILL. So, if someone wants to say things are "gay" and insult John.. Grow up. And don't bother posting, because it makes whoeever it is look foolish. Not to mention, i'm always around to make them look even MORE foolish. So don't. :P

If this guy wants to reply with anything, I'm not intrested in back and forth. Not when I already know i'm right. ...I'm done here. :P

P.S: Yes, I want this set! I can't wait for it to be released. Finally, a release date and everything. Joy!

With homosexuality? Sure there is!

>>Since when are they a gay couple?
Think of it as a situational joke. They're like the three stooges. Sometimes they're plumbers, sometimes cowboys, sometimes dog washers, sometimes sailors, etc. It's the same with Ren & Stimpy. Sometimes they're in space, sometimes they're ameircan, sometimes russian, sometimes they're animals, sometimes they fought in WW1, sometimes they're human like, sometimes they go to work, sometimes they're homeless and unemployed. It always changes, that's the point of cartoons.

Besides, a few gay jokes now and then doesn't mean they're gay even in that episode. It's just a joke! (Hoepfully. I wouldn't watch a gay show)

Happiness and joy...

>>during the pilot, I animated a lot of the scenes and I had a terrible time trying to get the tail to work right, so I gave up and stopped drawing it.

"Besides, a few gay jokes now and then doesn't mean they're gay even in that episode. It's just a joke! (Hoepfully. I wouldn't watch a gay show)"

Who cares wether there gay or not? I mean it's just a character point! Big Deal!! Comedy is comedy...

...although I do find it funny that everyone takes note that Ren and Stimpy are both guy characters, and yet no one seems to care or take notice that one's a DOG and one's a CAT!
I mean if something were bizzar about them having a relationship together, I would think it would be THAT! But of course no one notices that or cares because at least with that instance we can all agree and accept that it is just a Cartoon!

lol people R funny! "Guy and Guy BAAAAAD! Cat and Dog...NO PROBLEM!!!" lol

Hi John - If there is any chance at all of you taking a look - I would be over the moon!

You and the spumco guys have been my biggest influence since we first saw R&S in Australia.

My art is at www.pubba.net - Just one positive word from anyone at Spumco will justify the last 25 years of my life that I have been drawing toons!

man oh man! i love these.

the way stimpy goes from being upside down to right side up in the black jack one is genius. reminds me a little of how daffy separates and wiggles through the crowded door in "great piggy bank robbery."

i'm so ordering this.
