Beautiful People 19 - from memory

Usually I draw my caricatures out of the tabloids, like these 2 below.

While waiting for Eddie to arrive at my favorite pizza place-Lido's in Van Nuys, I doodled up these folk from memory.

You get a different kind of caricature when you draw from memory, maybe more cartoony and more of the essence of the person, because you are not distracted by a lot of details in the photographs.

If you saw the show on Sunday, then post a comment down below this post!

Wow! You have Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes down pat now, don't you. Incidently, I tried to draw Katie Holmes as a monkey a few weeks ago. I had the damndest time getting it right. I finally ended up with this piece of work right here, but I'm not sure I was 100% successful.
Have you noticed any landmarks on her face or head that would make caricaturing her much smoother?

That dude with the giant nose looks like he snorts a LOT of coke! :D

Hi David

Katie Holmes analyzed:

Her head shape - her forehead is a triangle coming to a point on top;
her lower face is kind of squarish.

short chin

Her eyes are wide apart and droop down on the outsides.
Her nose is short and stubby and broken in the middle

she has a little mouth when closed but big when smiling-her lips are wiggly and she has millions of little teeth that aim in as if they've been pushed in by something that shouldn't go in there

she has giant ears

does that help?

I have a difficult time drawing people from memory. I have a hard time getting down the subtle bits of their face that make them "them." However, I don't like just copying down a photograph or the person sitting in front of me. I like to do that first "copy" bit of the picture, then do my own drawing later when they're not in front of my face. I agree that it's better to do it from memory, but first I have to memorize the important aspects of their face that I want to capture.

It sounds like you're open to a lot more freestyle, John? I have let go and give that at try. :)

Michelle Pfeifer, Colin Farrell, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, Paris and Nicky Hilston.. Michelle Pfeifer again, Popeye and a few more Paris's, my god your Tom Cruise is excellent. You've really nailed him. I always exaggerate Katie's teeth when I do these quick ones from magazines..

This is an excellent way to practice spotting imperfections for live caricaturing don't you think?

Aimee's Sketch Blog said...

I also like how you noticed the collagen treatments in Jessica Simpson's upper lip and Paris' cauliflower ears!

Wow, I must learn to do that? I can only picture being in a party or something and whipping out such a great Tom Cruise with no reference, and watch people's jaws dropping to the ground.

i've been a HUGE fan of yours for many years! and when i look at your doodles, i can see alot of your style coming out in my own drawing. that why i would love to have something tangible that you created as an inspiration for me to keep drawing!

you said that you've made caricatures for your fans right? if so, i would like to know how much you charge and when would be the best time for you to do so?

Do you mean the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies music? If so, that's the great Raymond Scott. Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights is probably what you're looking for, but Manhattan Research Inc., which compiles a lot of his later electronic music, is just as good.

Best ever yet, John.
Tom Cruise and the lower Paris(as if there'd be an "upper" Paris--hey, btw--would you even touch that girl with a 25 foot pole? Hold ANY allure for ya? Hmmm...just asking), the first Lido's with Jessucka and her ex-hubby--those are keen.

I kind of wish that when idle and awaiting pizza pies you'd draw beautiful women instead of freakish tabloid celebs, but I know this makes you happier. Anyway, they're perfectly marvelous. : )

Michael, I think he must mean the R&S background public domain music, don't you? Not Raymond Scott, but the cheesy commercial BG music?

That background music isn't in the public domain. Most of the cues are owned by Associated Production Music. Some of song used are Folli the Foal,March of The Ants, I could go on forever. Check out this thread on the Spumboard. It should answer most of your questions. There's a CD out called Music for TV Dinners (not the 1960's version) that has some of the most recognizable tunes used in the first run of R&S.

And, wondering if you want to jam on guitar sometime.

John...Katie's not better at girls than you. She's different than you. I've seen your sexy beautiful girls and I've seen hers & I refuse to rate one over the other...no need to. Boy, if the Katie has you intimidated...now THERE is a cartoon premise. Guy loses his girlie drawing mojo to a sylph protege! Hee. Seriously, whip it--them--out! A couple of wimmin. Just for yourself, when no one is looking. Then post them here, no comment added. Then never peek at your girl post again and just ignore all the spumming that happens. ; )

Got a new show coming out on BBC in UK called FRANKENSTEIN'S CAT- do please call by the blog and check my stuff out. All of you. I promise it'll make you tingle.... in a good way.... ahem....

Would love to get in touch re: art shows and the like too!

Yesss! I love those charicatures. Especially great job on Jessica Simpson hahahah. They made me grin wide.

Oh the other comments reminded me of the fact that I discovered Raymond Scott through Ren and Stimpy. Absolutely FANTASTIC music. I've got Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights and a 2 disc compilation that has actual REHEARSALS on them as well! (the raymond Scott Quintette: Microphone Music)A real thrill! unreleased titles, radio performances, first rate rehearsals and forgotten gems between 1936 and 1939. A Must Own! Absolutely makes me gleee with the utternest of nerdyness. Thanks so much for introducing me to that.

John, and everyone else..

my lovely girlfriend Lauren suprised me by having John K do a portrait of me as a present for our 4 year anniversary. She knew I was a huge fan, so a few months ago she found John's email address and contacted him (before he even offered doing portraits here on the blog)! It was the best present anyone ever gave me, and to anyone considering having one done...

DO IT! IT'S WORTH IT. John K Is an incredibly nice guy. He was genuinly concerned with getting it done on time, and making sure It was perfect. He was so nice to my girl, and the pictures came out AWESOME!!!

The best part was he even threw in a special surprise for Lauren and drew her as well. Staring at John K's cartoon version of my girl is the biggest treat of all. She looks so cute, and sexy, and it makes me think of how lucky I am to have her, and what a cool guy John is for doing that.

It was the best surprise of my life. We already bought frames for them, and they're going up in the living room of our new Apartment in Connecticut. also, all my friends are jealous (as they should be). Ren and Stimpy look awesome, and John even incorporated the Son of Stimpy into mine- fresh from stimpy's ass to my face...

Thank you John, and thank you Lauren.

nice caricatures! it was a good diversion from lesson 2...*fingers going numb from late night cartooning*

John (or anyone!), I'm having a lot of trouble figuring out how to draw people's jawlines/cheeks (or dividing people's heads into shapes), any suggestions there??

I should keep going on ol' Preston Blair and I may yet have an epiphany....

Hi John,

Those caricatures are great! You do a mean Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson.

I finally published the sketch that I purchased from you on my blog. I wrote a small post about your blog as well.

-- J

To the fans => purchase a sketch - it's worth it. Like Kevin's girlfriend, I had a really good experience with John as well - he works with you on your sketch. He will do a custom sketch for you if you don't want a sketch of Paris Hilton, and I can understand that! :D
Plus, it's not that expensive. I've paid about 10-15x more for artwork than what I paid for this sketch.

I'm actually going to purchase more sketches from him sometime in late June - early July.

Yes, that analysis will help alot. Thank you, John.

That dude with the giant nose looks like he snorts a LOT of coke! :D

Actually, I don't think Tom Cruise would do coke (even if he did he certainly wouldn't do it anymore). Y'see, he's a Scientologist. They don't believe in putting ANY drugs into their bodies. L'il Katie wasn't even allowed to have any painkillers while giving birth (or scream in pain either). Tom pounded his fist down and said so. That's one of the reasons I've turned him into a monkey. :D
