Torture High School kids??? This is sex ed at it's FINEST! lol
Why must you torture high school kids living on the East coast.....
And why must he torture hobos living in the southern hemisphere?
i wish i could attend.
"Torture"! Pah! You kids today are SPOILED!!!
Kids today have too much sugar, and not enough GARLIC! (That's stuff's good for what ails ya!) Don't give kid's sugar; it makes them act MORE ANNOYING!!! Sugar is one the most horrible inventions EVER, along with "SATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS"! Those were made to "TORTURE" parents, havin' the kids wake us up with the TV turned so damn lound IN THE EARLY FRIGGIN' MORNING!!!
I could rant more, but I have to go yell at Jimmy again. He's got his head stuck in a PICKLE JAR, for pete's sake! See ya later!
hey I posted that clip on you tube!
ELWEE AND THE TREE WEASELS
I wish John would visit Baltimore one day. Also dose any body here remember The Brothers GRUNT?
Damn I wish I lived in Calli.. All these shows need to be on DVD..ASAP.. Please John
"Hi Eddie!"
It's Jesse again.I have another question for ya. What was the most torture for you? Working on cartoons in the 1980's or studying the Pie Pirates cartoon? I also would like you to know that I just bought the third volume of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVD set and was listining to your commentaries. I love your story about Bob Clampett pissing in some ones beer. If MGM released all of Tex Averys classic cartoons would you and John do commentaries on them? That would be cool!
your pal,
Jesse Oliver
REPENT YOU SINNERS AND DO NOT ENTER JOHN K'S DEN OF INEQUITY!
Why not go see Disney's The Wild instead! There are lots of celebrities in that!
hook up the east coast, john. even if we all need to pitch in and rent out the conference room at the Holiday inn somewhere
John - You should take this show on the road (and make sure to come to Toronto!)...
Thank you for posting these images. The "honeyorgy" from Boo Boo Runs Wild is so beautiful.

I'm GOING!!! And I'm so excited, I can hardly contain myself!!! See you there, John!!!
I'd like to be able to get there:/
Looks like Its gonna be lots of fun!
Woo Hoo!! This is shaping up to be a blast!

What programs are you currently using to animate with?
It all looks so crisp and perfect!
John,
could you please post onlinee some of this videos?
Thinbk at the poor ouside-US guys like me that we'll not be able to watch them and meet you at the retrospective.....thanks, John!
I'm not an animator. I'm just a wee old fogey wishing upon wish for the fruit of your loins. Hell, you could probably store a fart in a jar and I'd buy it.
So I bet it won't surprise you to hear that I want to be able to purchase these cartoons on DVD or tape. I don't know what's involved with making these available professionally, but how about making a bootleg one available to we, the starving John K. fanboy masses? I know fanbases are supposed to be fickle, but $#!+ I've been with ya for DECADES!
I'd pay whatever you asked for it.
-JSL
I'm not sure if I could afford a trip all th way from Saskatchewan to there. Hopefully, someone John knows will bring a video camera so that he can post the highlights of this event on Youtube and thusly, this blog.
John,
I have been working out of the preston blair book for three days now and I can't thank you enough for exposing me to it. I will throw together a blog for it and put it up on the ASIFA archive blog list, but for the time being I could barely pull myself from the book long enough to thank you.
Haha! Luckly I live in Santa Monica! I'll be there and I gonna love it baby!
-Drew J
So I was trying to practice the first lesson of the animation lessons, and I was curious as to what grade of pencils you're comfortable using. I only have HB right now, but I figured it would be wise to practice with something in the B range. And how do you acheive that effect where lines get thicker and thinner in one sweep. Is it an angle of the pencil thing? A wrist thing?
HAAA-AAAAAAAY! I just bought the Preston Blair book from The Book & Briar Patch for $10.95 Canadian. I wonder if it's the right one though. The outside cover has an off-white bumpy canvas. There's a blue strip at the top, in it are yellow letters that sat Animation 1. Over top of the canvas is a picture of a squirrel skipping as well as two blue pencils and two acorns along with three birds on the botom left. I wasn't entirely sure this was the right book until I openned it up. The first page is the yellow cover John had mentioned before as being the right one.
Should I use this book or take it back?
^THAT'S IT!!
Hey John! I'd love to see the Spumco styled Yogi Bear toon... I've wanted to for a while now :P Unfortunatly, I don't live in CA anymore.
But I was curious about something... how many employees did Spumco have around the time Ren & Stimpy was going full-force on Nick? (A bit of an oxymoron, I know...)
I'm trying to write a speech for my class on how 2D Animation is better for TV than 3D Animation. It's good so far, I just need some hard facts to present. Any insight you can give me on that would help, too!
Mainframe Entertainment, the guys behind Beast Wars and ReBoot, has about 315 employees... if Spumco has less, then this can prove my point that 2D Animation takes less manpower to do and is therefore easier :D If Spumco has more, well... uhh.. I'll figure out how to make that work. Yep.
Hi Jesse!
My most torturous cartoon experience? That would have to be working on formula cartoons in the 80s. That's when an angry producer told me what he called "The Mouth and the A**hole Theory," which would take too long to explain here.
I'd love to work with John on Tex commentaries. I just did comments on a couple of Tashlin cartoons but I'm sorry to say they didn't go very well. I violated my own cardinal rule, which is "Never rehearse or even think about think about what you're going to say on the day you're going to speak in public." In other words, you can prepare all you want but never, ever do it on the day of the event. I did and the outcome was predictably rigid and unspontaneous.
-Eddie Fitzgerald
Hey Eddie!
It's really funny/sad to look at the credits for some of the worst 80's cartoons because sometimes you see really great artists worked on them. Did you guys ever develop bad habits working on 80's cartoons that you had trouble shaking?
Also Eddie hurry up and get a blog and explain the Mouth and the Asshole theory on there. Your fans demand it! I will buy you a goddamn scanner if you make a blog.
-Chuck T.
"Hi John!"
It's Jesse.I find it very interesting that the later Chuck Jones cartoons in the 50's had a really cool looking style to them yet they had limited animation. My favorite early Chuck Jones cartoons are "Elmers Canned Camera" and "Elmers Pet Rabbit". What is your opinion about the Tom & Jerry cartoons that Chuck Jones directed?
your pal,
Jesse Oliver
Hey, John. Are any of these really cool cartoons going to be on the Lost Episodes DVD as extras, because I think that would be cool if they were.
How can us on the East Coast see these great animated gems?
- Eric A.
Is that cat on the weekend pussy hunt pic Cigarettes the Cat from the Peeping Tom "pilot episode"? If so, that's what I want!!! That's the kind of stuff you need to be focusing on. You don't see anything like that on Cable let alone the rental market! I'll bet that if you create more stuff like that and you spread the word and get some publicity, you'll get alot more interest!
Hi Chuck!
LOL! Thanks a lot for the scanner offer but I don't need it. I just bought one and am having fun just looking at it. Aren't gadgets wonderful!? Anyway, I'll get the blog up real soon and I'll explain "The Mouth & The A**hole Theory" when I do. It's pretty dark and evil so I hope I don't depress anybody with it.
-Eddie Fitzgerald
Why is it that Friz Freleing cartoons have good jokes and gags but not really good cartoony drawings?
John K. needs to do an east coast show in either New York or Boston.
These are cool and important places too. Why do you hate us people outside of California so much? :(
Eddie,
You're really off the beam: your commentaries weren't anywhere as awful as you make them sound(and so why plant doubt where none yet exists?)! In the ones with John you're perfectly relaxed and natural--in fact, your voice sounds positively sultry. So there!
Anyway, this blog-avoidance of yours is beyond silly--what's with the coyness? You needn't have visual aids to describe any producer's "thoughts", much less "theories".
And if you will depress with that one, well, just pluck at any gently wafting ideas that fall about your sagacious ears, won't you?
Please?
Tonight, Eddie. TO-night!
Anybody remember "Life With Louie"? Not that it was good or anything, but I just felt like mentioning it.
Hi John
I know that you hate "Who Frammed Roger Rabbit" but what do you think of the Ralph Bakshi film "Cool World"?
Jesse
Hey Dr.Awkward
Do you remember The Brothers GRUNT?
Brothers Grunt was horrible.
The animation behind it was solid, it was just you know, aimed at being disturbing and disgusting then entertaining. John does his fair share of grotesque humor but he keeps it all in line by making his visual gags actually funny.
Antonucci is still an awesome talent though. You can't deny the absolute greatness of Ed, Edd, and Eddy in both a technical and creative sense.
The other criticism of Antonucci is that he is somewhat of a Luddite in that he resisted using any digital production methods until he was literally forced to when the last studio that hand painted animated cells went digital.
JohnK's great because he balances his love of classic cartoons and respect for traditional production methods with the willingness to be technically innovative. (i.e being one of the first to produce flash cartoons and embracing modern methods where it will simply make peoples lives easier and not compromise on quality.
I loved Antonucci's Lupo The Butcher and The Brothers GRUNT! But I could never really get in to Ed, Edd & Eddy. The drawings in that show are cool and funny looking but the other characters always get in the way! The olny Ed, Edd & Eddy cartoon I like is "As Thick As An Ed". I also like any cartoon made by Pat Ventura(Yucky Duck) and The Dirdy Birdy by John R. Dilworth. MTV needs to put the complete series of The Brothers GRUNT on DVD!
Yeah Grunts on dvd !!! a friend of mine works on ed edd & eddy and she told me that the Brothers GRUNT! episodes are in bolt and Antonucci dont want 2 make the episodes to dvd cause he thinks no one is gonna buy it i would buy it for sure and many people i know 2
You must release your banned shit on DVD. I don't care how, just gimme!
Hey Makinita
Tell your friend to tell Danny that people want to see The Brothers GRUNT on DVD! The classics never die! The shows that need to be on DVD are the following.
1. Rocko's Modern Life
2. The Brothers GRUNT
3. Duckman
WE NEED THESE SHOWS ON DVD!!!!
asking for it on a blog isn't going to do anything. Write to them. The squeeky wheel gets the grease. If you feel that strongly about it post a letter to the owners every week :-).
Is there any chance John of these works of art getting seen by the wider world?
Honestly, I've never seen "The Brothers Grunt", but have seen "Oggy & The Cockroaches", which was a VERY weird show, kind of like R&S on speed. It was made in France, and there was no diaogue, but the situations were so bizarre, like when the cockroaches used a "fishbowl" or something to make lumps on Oggy's tongue.
Another show I've never gotten to see, but had heard about, was "AAARGH!!! It's The Mr. Hell Show", which apparently aired in Canada, where John's from.
Also, I've seen "The Oblongs" at least once, but I don't understand why they cancelled it. It was a somewhat decent show, by the way.
Oh, and "Roger Rabbit" wasn't as bad as "Space Jam".
Hi there -
i want to thank you for the animation school lessons you've been posting here. im a 24 years old graphic design student from israel, and i started learning illustration class in my school, but my teacher sucks, so i started searching for something to learn from. i know how to draw but i don't know a rat's ass in illustration. i was quite stuck with it, but then i saw your lessons and slowly im progressing.
thanks and keep it up
yaron
israel.
Hey John
I'd like to know your thoughts on voicework for cartoons.
Oggy & the Cockroaches was a cool looking show. But the backgrounds looked to digital. Does anybody remember Space Goofs?
"Space Goofs"'s theme music was retarded.
Yea, no love for the east coast cartoonists. *Grumble*
John, I have the Cartoon Animation book. I hope it's okay,
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1560100842/qid=1148167792/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/002-0784563-7461612?v=glance&s=books
I checked on amazon.com and I think the other book is out of print.
_Eric
I'm with Max Ward on this one. :c
That's odd. I posted an extensive reply addressing Bill Cass's question about CGI/2D economies; it would be between Broken Bot and Eddie's scanner message. I don't see how it would have been considered controversial (it was based around reasons why Mainframe's staffing and Spumco's staffing aren't directly comparable in terms of efficiency for reasons like difference in amount of output between the companies, outsourcing of various tasks in known amounts at Spumco and in unknown amounts at Mainframe, and the difficulties of comparing subjective elements like what is "good" about the output in terms of what is efficient) so it shouldn't have been removed for content; does blogger eat random posts that have already shown up sometimes or was this intentional for some reason?
is there any chance you'll be showing the new weird al video? my lucky wife got the opportunity to see you and the video at cartoon network. "Another masterpiece," she says (but she was too shy to get your autograph for me)
anyways, definitely count me in... although the fandango link isn't working for me... hopefully it aint sold out yet...
Hey Ted
Yeah, it had eaten some of MY posts, as well.

Eddie Fitzgerald needs to get his ass in gear and put up a blog. Stop making us wait so long to hear your much hyped cadre theories.
Pretty sick stuff : )
R2K

For anyone who's interested: You remember that Censor Monkey I recently put up on my blog? Well, I just gave him a companion right now. Check it out here.
The biggest reason saying this here is because I have John to thank for that drawing. His goose-necked, flat-headed version of Katie Holmes really helped me with my picture. Thank you, Mr. Kricfalusi. You artwork does more good than evil. (Sometimes it does both at the same time. Try and figure that one out).
Hey John
What is your all time favorite Three Stooges film?
Jesse
Anonymous, Mike: Thanks for the comments. The first post is in the works.
-Eddie
Hi Eddie!
It's Jesse again. On the audio commentarie you did with John for the cartoon "Porkys Party" you said something I totaly agree with. It's not enough for a cartoon character to look funny, they have to be animated funny as well. Thats one lesson all future cartoonist should know.
your pal,
Jesse
P.S. I really like your worm cartoon. I just wish I was able to see it again. I only saw it once and I always wanted to see it again.
Hola John!! me encanta como trabajas!
te cuento q yo tambien soy animador pero en argentina.
en mi blog tengo una historieta que esta bastante inspirada en tu estilo se llama "TÃa" espero que la veas y me dijas que te parece.
saludos, sanBou
Hey John, was Wonder Wart-hog the inspiration for He-hog the atomic pig? click on my name for a picture...
I recon a dvd would be great the chances of getting over from the uk are pretty slim!
I've seen "What Pee Boners are For", and it should be shown in every sex ed. class in the country. now THAT'S education!
your he-hog character looks a little like benny hill.
>>Hey John, was Wonder Wart-hog the inspiration for He-hog the atomic pig? click on my name for a picture...<<
No of course not. Was Porky Pig the inspiration for Wonder Whatever that is?
There are lots of cartoon pigs.
Marvel and DC comics in the 60s are the inspiration for He Hog.
Hi Jesse! "Tales of Worm Paranoia" is archived on Cartoon Brew, March 9 I think.
"Porky's Party" is a real gem. I love the frame grab where an eager, enthusiastic Porky answers the door stark naked below the waist and out there waiting to get in is some crazy...THING... on the doorstep. Also the cartoon worked great in Black and white. When glack and white is done well you don't miss the color.

Wonder Wart-Hog also appeared in ... underground comix...
Wonder Wart-Hog's adventures were serialized in comic strip form in many underground newspapers and college newspapers from the mid-1960s through 1977..."
Elwee and the Tree Weasels!!! The memories.
At risk of sounding like the hopeless fan girl I am, I have been an admirer of your work for many years and I honestly wish I could attend your retrospective. Anyway, I would like to thank you for being a positive influence on my art.
Cheers,
Vas from Minnesota
Sweeeeeet. Might have to pop on by and ogle the purty pictures.
Yeah im doing a report about you and your work and i wish there were more cartooning jobs in america :(
but i have 3 more years until college
last night's show was amazing. pre-ordered the "lost episodes" when i got home. so good to see the real uncut deal instead of all the derivative crap that's out there. and very educational -- of course we males already know about "pee boners," but i don't recall the "cat jesus" from reading about the children's crusades. i think the time is right for another children's crusade, or at least a fully realized children's crusade cartoon.
Sandy Bottomfeeder is making a tude expression. Uh-oh!
Oggy-cartoon is getting very famous among al age group. Most of the people are watching it with deep interest.
