APC Trailer - Altruists

This cartoon is a tribute to the 3 Stooges. We crammed this full of more jokes per second than any other cartoon I've ever made. Lots of different kinds too and some just plain surreal.

Mike Kerr and Eric Bauza added a few and Jeff Aimey and Nick Cross did some great storyboarding-Vincent Waller too.

Kristy Gordon did the BG color styling.

It's like one of those episodes that starts with Moe beating the crap out of his best friends, but then he hears a woman crying and decides to help her out of the goodness of his soft heart. I love that incongruity.

So the story actually has a plot (and heart!), but lots of surprises happen along the way.

The animation was done at Bigstar in Korea and it's pretty damn good for foreigners.

Oh yeah, and we experimented quite a bit with the "sound design".

Wow that animation is pretty good for gooks.

Hey John!

Does Ren ever get to bag a human woman?

You see, this is what's missing in modern animation. It's a little thing called "structure", and that's what makes the show so watchable.

Great stuff! Never stop with the dirty jokes. :D

Wow, that was really crammed pack full of jokes. Really goofy and surreal too. That might be your best cartoon yet, but I'll just have to wait and see.

Ooooh Stimpy's butt waving... it's like a young girl's greatest cartoon sin!

I loved the different nostril jokes on the angry duck.. like the steam coming out and the windshield wipers. Oh, and 'The 3 Things'... as if they could have their own stand-alone cartoon.

I really didn't want to spoil the dvd anymore, but i had to watch this clip all the way through. It was weird AND funny.

Hey, how'd ya know the guy's a cracker? Anyways, your reply was just as stupid. The only way to deal with these kind of comment is to ignore them and let John clean up the crap. Don't add your crap to his crap, cuz then we'd have a stupid non-cartoon related string of comments.

In the scene where the Woman sings, "We're getting a new house," is that a Jim Smith Stimpy?

Great episode. Originally, I was skeptical about this particular episode because the storyline looked too simple and almost contrary to the nature of the characters. However the simplicity of the story didn't matter...the story just served as a vehicle to connect very entertaining visual gags together.

That's it! Let's give them their own spinoff show! And let's give them names, like QuackPuss, WaddleWhiskers and FeatherPurr. We have the power to make them stars!!!

Hi John

"OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

This is funny shit! This trailer is amazing. The "Altruists" story is completely crazy and hilarious. I can not wait for the DVD! I could not believe the sex scene with Stimpy and the Duck. Craziest shit I have ever seen.

QUESTIONS:

1. Do you have a favorite Three Stooges short?

2. Was the Duck your tribute to Bob Clampett's Daffy Duck?

Fantastic stuff. I see some of the elements from Weekend Pussy Hunt in this one (example: in WPH, when Dirty Dog had his way with Jimmy The Idiot Boy's leg, Jimmy's shin got pregnannt and out of his foot came a litter of footpuppies. In Altruists, One Angry Duck has his way with Stimpy, and Stimpy lays eggs that hatch and become The Three Things.) The gag a second works in Altruists because it's visual and not snappy dialogue/script based. I think there has to be an animation film historian who can sit down and create a whole new language that describes visual animation gags and animation techniques as opposed to commenting on snappy dialogue or styles over substance, blah, blah, blah. What do ya think?

John certainly has an unhealthy facisnation with the male ass and what goes in and out of it.

Anywho...looks good! Not all the jokes tickled my funny bone, but enough did (that clip you showed before with the announcer whispering the prices of the prizes that isn't included in this trailer was actually my favourite gag I've seen so far).

BrianB said...

Sweet. Consider it as good as bought.

Btw, what kind of entertainment do you enjoy today? Any movies, music, tv, videogames, actors, animators, or dare I say animation?

Its one big cartoon issue, with a duck thrown in for good measure.

Keep up the good work!

How come the duck uses a condom yet Stimpy gets impregnated and lays an egg?

I don't even wanna know how the duck gets his tongue in stimpy's mouth, through the fake beak on the end of his nose. Just one of the many questions I don't want answered about this clip...

David Germain said...

Many many brilliant things within those clips. I love The Three Things. Now THIS is what animation is all about.

Although I was somewhat befuddled by the boob fondling at the end. But, then again, these are only clips and not the full episode. I'm sure if I saw it in its entirety, it would all flow much better.

Who did Stimpy's butt getting nailed? Nick Cross?

ToonBard said...

Quite sexual isn't it. Made me laugh alot though, especially that bit with Ren sawing the log.

Eric C. said...

It looks good John. Thought other than the part of Ren beating up Stimpy and suddenly hearing a woman cry, I didn't really see anything relating to the stooges.

It was mostly sexual gags through out the hole trailer.

I might be wrong, I'll check out the episode when I get the DVD set.

How's the Ultimute set coming along?

Anonymous said...

A lot of non-sequitur jokes in this one. Those were fun.

Anonymous said...

I found that "The 3 Things" title card the most shocking thing in the whole clip. It just hit me from out of nowhere.

Favorite parts:

- "Mew!" "Yeesh."
- Stimpy as stereotypical construction worker on top of the roof. "Jeez-a-ma-Criss!"

Anonymous said...

^^

And by shocking, I don't mean morally disturbing, I mean startling in a tri-colored-PBS-logo-from-the-70s kind of way. :)

Awesome!

Roberto González said...

This looks pretty good. I love the surreal stuff, especially the Three Things (all the scene actually),the boy without a head (I love his voice) and the italian Stimpy! The drawings and colour are pretty good too. Perhaps too many jokes involving the girl's boobs, the first one with the nipples and the Fairy Old Man as the winter is pretty good, but the one with the cop really didn't do anything for me. Anyway, I am totally looking forward this one.

Roberto González said...

Incidentally, could you list me the musical themes used during the scene with the duck and Stimpy? I love all the music used in that segment.

Only one gripe:

"The animation was done at Bigstar in Korea and it's pretty damn good for foreigners."

So you farmed out the animation. Tisk-tisk. And I thought you wanted to save the animation world. Typical - farm out the actual animation to some overseas house, while anouther aspiring home grown animator looses his or her job - or can't find one.

It is because of THAT attitude that the animation in the US - and Canada for that matter, has gone away from us.

JohnK said...

No, no, it's because they don't give you enough money to produce it in North America-unless you have a prime time budget.

I keep a lot more in the country than other studios by doing all the key poses at Spumco, so I keep a lot more people employed on a project than the rest of the TV studios.

Hey Kristy Gordon

You did a great job on the Back Ground paintings in "Altruists". Your painting style looks like you were influenced by the B G paintings in Tex Avery and Bob Clampett cartoons.

this trailer left me going "bleh. do i wanna spend money on this?" oh, and although I agree that racist comments should be ignored, I still thought calling the poster a cracker was better than any of the gags in the clip.

John! When are you and Katie gonna post about The Zodiacs? It's already made a few news sites!
Did I jump the gun?

I liked the clip, but the scene with Stimpy's nose making out with the duck was GROSS, as was the anal sex thing... That must be Log For Fags. "It's better than straight! It's gay!" Although I LOVED the three things with their classic title card. You should do a spin off with them! I also liked the idea that Stimpy's nose had its own tongue for that particular scene. I also like the boobs.

>I keep a lot more in the country than other studios by doing all the key poses at Spumco, so I keep a lot more people employed on a project than the rest of the TV studios.

I'm not too familiar with animation, but isn't that what the old WB animators did? They did all the key frames, and the inbetweener did the rest? Do the animation studios you send your shows to only inbetween or did I mix up key frames and key poses?

If Ren is Moe and Stimpy is Larry, who is the third stooge? Is it Curly, Shemp, Joe or Curly Joe?

I thought the original Ren & Stimpy had heart to it's comedy and art. But the new Ren & Stimpy's humor acts like something from Drawn Together.

Where's the dry humor like Log, we'll give em another 20 Bucks, YOU SICK LITTLE MONKEY, Don't wizz on the elecric fence?

It seems to be replaced by "Oh yeah, that feels so good" "Hey lady, what's with your t**s"

In my opintion, possibly another Ren Seeks Help or that My Little a** would have saved the show from cancelation.

I don't know, I apoligize for being kind of harsh on this But I feel that there's something missing.

I'm still going to buy the set, for the sake of being a fan of John K's.

Don't worry. The new eps have lots of heart in them and tons of acting. These are just trailors, showing what you COULDN'T get in the original.

The show originally was considered so rude and poor taste by what was around at the time, that it was much harsher by comparison than what it is to the times now.

Character and acting are my most important concern and what I do best. But I will always have stuff that is "edgy" and most people expect that.

It's sure not as extreme as South Park. content wise so look for other stuff in the cartoons. There's plenty of stuff that you can't get in ANY other cartoons anywhere. Just like always.

The sex jokes are added because the show was for Spike TV and sex is about the only taboo that was left at the time.

And most people like sex anyway.

Jesse Oliver said...

Hi John

I love edgy cartoons. I feel like the APC Ren & Stimpy cartoons are more edgy then South Park and Drawn Together combind. I hope you make more edgy cartoons in the future. I remember once going on www.spumco.com and watching the first half of "Baby Sitting The Idiot" with Jimmy The Idiot Boy & George Liquor and I remember just cracking up at what was going on. That was I think the first time I had ever seen one of your edgy cartoons. When you were doing The Ripping Friends series was there any complaints that the people at Fox Kids Network had? Anyway, your cartoons are the best. I hope one day the R & S episodes "Wilderness Adventure" and "Life Sucks" will be in production but if Paramount or Spike TV hires you to make more R & S cartoons would you think of animating the following R & S storys that were rejected by Nickelodeon in 1991 or 1992?

1. Ren's Bad Habits

2. The Big Switch

3. The Celluettes

4. Hillbillie Hoek

It would be great to see more Ren & Stimpy cartoons in the future. I remember you saying in a APC promo for Spike TV that you would be happy if you spent the rest of your life doing Ren & Stimpy.

"LONG LIVE REN & STIMPY!!!!!!"

I have noticed that the new ones are more about the actual cartoons and and less on regular skits like the "Log ads" or "Ask Dr. Stupid". Also, the abesense of old side characters. Not really a bad thing, just an observation.

Damn straight. Don't listen to fans who want you to make the classic Ren and Stimpy all over again. I noticed a lot of people complain about the sex jokes and the gross humor, but we're not all prudes.

And as edgy and taboo as South Park gets, it doesn't leave me as wonderfully disturbed as some of your cartoons. That sex scene with the duck! My god! Maybe not as blatant as South Park, but more fucked up on so many different levels! I love to see hybrid offspring like when Dirty Dog humps Jimmy's leg. Foot puppies!

Do you even care about cartoons, or did you just stumble across this blog, never having heard of him or his cartoons before, deciding to say something negative (albeit uninformed) about it just for the hell of it? You think it's funny? Are you getting a big laugh out of being a sophomoric asshole? I dunno, but you sound like a snot-nosed little punk to me! Have you any knowledge of golden age cartoons, or do you just watch the shit that's on TV these days, thinking it's "cool"?

If it wasn't for you, we cartoon fans wouldn't have anything now but South Park and Family Guy...
and that thought alone is more depressing than the actual shows.

Kevin W. Martinez said...

This Ren and Stimpy Clip was actually enjoyable. Much Better than the APC cartoons that aired.

Speaking of Adult Cartoons breaking "taboos", i'd like to see an adult cartoon made today that tackles the darker side of Paint Thinner and pyromania, which have been taboo ever since Beavis and Butt-head first came on in 1993

I liked the condom joke especially as I used to distribute Rubber Ducky Condoms as a sideline (twenty years and still going strong). Too bad you couldn't sign them up as a sponsor of online George Liquor Program or Weekend Pussy Hunt, that would have been a killer web ad!
I don't mind the sexual jokes, hell, they're Bob Clampett funny, it's bad the poor feller ain't alive to see this. Thee's an idea for a cartoon - I Remember Bob - an animated romp of Bob Clampett playing all those silly pranks on his co-workers and friends, acting as silly and wacky as his creations. Animated versions of Ruth, Sody and Bobby could sit and reminiscense then gliss to Clampett pulling some over the top stunt not even Bugs or Daffy would consider.

Roberto González said...

I think the problem with the sex jokes is more the quantity of them than the quality of them, some of them are pretty funny and I actually like the majority of them in this trailer. Though I still find there is too little of the other kind (there's probably more dry humor in the whole cartoon, like mr K hs said).

I've said it before, but for me the perfect combination was the way Weekend Pussy Hunt or the Spumco comic books style, they had some sexy elements and sometimes they were edgier than old Ren and Stimpy (that gay guy in Jimmy's "For a quarter" story), but they were subtle. I love the scene with Jimmy and the catholic girls in Remote Control Jimmy, I think it's extremely sexy without being too obvious (we don't see Jimmy's erection, for example).

Some scenes in the Naked Beach Frenzy clips are pretty sexy and I'll admit that I find weird to see Ren and Stimpy in that context, I like it for the most part. That scene with the girls hugging Stimpy is sexy and funny and the animation is nice.

However, when it comes to another type of episode, like this one, I feel some of the sexy jokes are a little forced. This cartoon is not about a top-less beach. Though it's nothing bad with having a sexy girl, too much atention is devoted to her tits. I think the girl is already sexy the way she's drawn and we don't need to see how she touch her tits to make them bounce with a sound effect added to it. Just animate her with her tits bouncing naturally, that would be less...uh...distracting. And the cartoon in general would look less "edgy" for the sake of it.

Well, that's at least the way I see it. Anyway, I already said, there are a lot of brilliant ideas in this trailer and some of them have nothing to do with sex.

Chloe Cumming said...

The Duckstimpy sex scene is really something. I hadn't seen it before. Only heard tell of it

I don't have a lot to add with silly old words

i'm sad to see ren and stimpy reduced to crude toilet and sex jokes in these APC trailors. yes, there was always an extreme edge to the early shows, but i thought it was done with wit and intelligence. these just come across as bad schoolboy humour. just coarse. and the surreal elements don't make it clever. their characters don't seem real anymore, just psycotic. ren doesn't even look right. i'm really diappointed John.

Randy said...

Yeah, it's not so cool to have a character "helping" himself to some "ample bosoms." It feels god damn creepy that it's treated like a totally normal thing to do. I guess in an adolescent boy's fantasty, it would always be ok to just grab at tits wherever they may be found. Is that what these cartoons are?

JohnK said...

>>I guess in an adolescent boy's fantasty, it would always be ok to just grab at tits wherever they may be found. Is that what these cartoons are?<<

No, they are realistic depictions of man's noblest and most chaste aspirations. That's what cartoons are all about.

Spizzerinktum said...

The funniest gag to me was Ren "sawing", because it's such a great exaggeration of the old metaphors used in earlier films. I think the fact that it *is* a metaphor, rather than a cartoon representation of duck/cat egg sex, is what's so funny about it. (Man, watching those eggs pop out made my tubes hurt.)

I could see another 'toon with dozens of metaphorical "sex scenes", each one more screamingly ridiculous than the last.

Steven said...

Plus, you're teaching the way to fondle breasts, so it's educational as well.
