Well, I didn't make the Comicon, but I did attend the lunch and screening you did at Alamo Drafthouse in Austin last August. Since you didn't have a blog at the time, I'll link my friend and I's recap of the day and my photos from it, including the sketch you did of me.

the Ren and Stimpy in this drawing looks just like the ones in 'Big House Blues' and first season episodes. I'd like to see that version of Ren and Stimpy in future cartoons, personally. Preferrably, another R&S in outer space toon like 'Black Hole.' I love those 3 outer space toons with Commander Hoek nad Cadet Stimpy

maybe cause I drew it?

There were only 4 artists who drew Big House Blues...when you have a series, you have to have 40 artists or so and they all draw different.

John! It was unbelievably cool seeing you at the Con... let alone you RECOGNIZING me. And you and Katie did drawings for me! Surely one of the highlights of my life. As soon as I get my scanner working, I'll post pictures and the drawings!!

John and Katie- Thanks for being the greatest cartoonists in the world!

John, It is a privelage and an honor to grace your page with my Hideous Face!
That picture still floors me!
I just finished the Adult Party Cartoon and it's great.
My favorites are definately Altruists and Stimpys Pregnant.
They look like they were all animated on 'ones' and the Jokes just keep on coming at you like a machine gun!
This month just keeps getting better and better!
Thanks Again!

I agree with everything you just said except the part about Black Hole. If they do another Space episode, I'd like to see something with the surreal, horror imagry of Marooned with the drama of Space Madness.

But back to Big House Blues. It's probably the most stylish episode visually in my opinion, because, like John said, there's a limited amount of styles, so it shines through. Plus Carbunkle animated that didn't they? They always do the best shit. I know Ren and Stimpy have evolved immensely since, but it would be cool to see characters in their raw form again.

In short, I'm looking forward to seeing another pilot from Spumco. I hope someone picks one up!

Hey John

I have a question about the "Altruists" cartoon.

In the log sawing scene who did the close-up drawing of Stimpy before it cuts to Ren saying "Shame on you!, Clean that shit up!"?

That is my favorite drawing of Stimpy!

First time posting here, after reading the blog for a while.

Wow, Comicon was so busy.
A few questions.
Is there going to be a Ren and Stimpy DTV project?

and what do you think makes a cartoon idea great?

I love that, and it only happens in a Spumco cartoon. When I doodle Stimpy I add a tail and whiskers. :P

Would you ever do a cartoon where George Liquor takes Ren & Stimpy fishing?

That seems like a cool idea for a R & S cartoon to me

Those are my favourite episodes! I love all three, though I remember reading that John K was disappointed with Black Hole because there was supposed to be a crescendo of increasing weirdness in Ren's and Stimpy's mutations.

"Blast off to adventure in the Amazing Year Four Hundred Billion!"

>We sold out of the Lost Episodes and the first 2 box sets of Ren and Stimpy. For some reason we couldn't sell any of the second Games box set. I can't imagine why not.

Maybe because some eediot hired Klasky-Csupo to draw the cover?

>I talked to Robert and suggested he help me write some George Liquor cartoons for straight to video and he said he loved George Liquor.

Hell yeah! You should do some TV Funhouse for SNL!

>(Although my usually tasteful and perceptive assistant Marc who comes from a long line of Usureres was not impressed with what he calls a technologically primitive presentation of puppet articulation.

Don'y you usually have to have a job to have an assistant? (HEY-OH!!!) Triumph is like Cecil The Seasick Serpant. Speaking of which, did you see Team America World Police?

>Well Triumph, makes me cry-with laughter!

There's irony there but I'm not touching it.

> Now you think I am a dirty Liar.

Nah, we already thought that, John. ;) (OK Insult Comic mode off)

>Maybe because all the guys are now drawing in that faggy Cal Arts flat phony ass Nickelodeon/Cartoon Network style.

I LOVE it when John RIPS things I HATE to shreds! Validation, it tastes so sweet.

Hi John! I only wish I had been to the Comicon, and that I had something to contribute here, but traveling isn't in the cards for me this year.

I just found your blog and the Preston Blair animation lessons yesterday, and I'm starting on those. It'll take me forever to catch up, but I'm going to do it...just bear with me; I'm not very good at all yet. Thanks for doing this!

Mad Max Winston said...

Wow... it's amazing to me that my favorite cartoonist of all time seems to be such an a-hole. "N****r Rape" hotel? No one else finds that bizarre or offensive? Oh well, I guess we're all white after all.

And I'm sick of the Calarts hating... I'm currently going there and I see a wide variety of styles there. Sure, plenty of it sucks, and some of it I just don't like, but a lot of it is freaking amazing. Maybe you just don't see that art.

It's ridiculous to say that the culmination of crappy animation that exists today comes from the faggy wimp asssmackers (like me) at Calarts. It's not very inspiring to hear this kind of stuff from one of the artists I look up to the most.

Couldn't make it to the Con (but Ohio's cool...right?) -- but a thought occurred to me:

John, I'll give you $20 + S&H for a T-shirt of The Three Things, but it's gotta be silkscreened...none of that iron-on cafepress business. Deal?

I've been pretty satisfied with shirts I've bought that were printed by this
guy, if that makes a difference.

I have something to say to the people.

John K.'s slight was not a self-censored and highly offensive racial slur. It was the joke in general.

Honestly, would it have been any better if he had said "Black-Man Rape Hotel"?. Certainly not. Also, just becasue you censor a word doesn't mean it's no longer implied and therefore just as offensive.

Finally, I think everyone should remember that no matter how much you dislike the person for who they are, that person's art should stand alone. None of you stopped watching the work of Clampett and Avery and all the other racists at old-time cartoon studios. Their material is far more offensive and happens to be proudly displayed in their films.

And that idiotic rant gives the title "anonymous" yet another blemish. Sigh, another perfectly good blog post mired by spiteful assholes. If the garbage can icon was available to me, I'd erase just that above post immediately.

I don't really care said...

It has more dignity. It would've been even better to say, "Martin Luther King, Jr. Institute of Advanced Research in Sexual Violation and Stereotype Perpetuation." That's the real name. I got my Doctorate in Runaways there.

Interesting. I wonder what John's take on Gene Dietch is, particularly on Tom Terrific, which was an attempt to make good animation despite pitiful budgets.

Whoa, that's a tall order. I doubt they have nude photos they'd want to show. When you have talent you don't have to resort to posing nude.

The "humor" in that film is exactly the same as in South Park (probably because of Matt & Trey).

I've gotta get my own blog...

ComedyFan said...

Ok so the guy who swears South Park is just horrible entertainment, writing and all, representing the down fall of today’s cartoons and blah, blah, blah...is now claiming to love the writing and entertainment value of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog...

I really don't see how what that guy (Triumph’s writer/"puppeteer") has been doing that is all that different from what South Park has been doing, other than he’s using crappy puppets instead of crappy animations. Anyhow, I guess the point is what makes you laugh makes you laugh…SOUTH PARK included!

ComedyFan said...

BTW I only say this because I love and laugh my ass off to Ren and Stimpy, Triumph, AND South Park

There all great in my book

Anonymous said...

Dont hate on Triumph and South Park. These are two of the only good animation/funny things done in the last 20 years (along with Ren and Stimpy)It's ok if you hate Family Guy and everything on Cartoon Network because that crap does suck. THe artwork was kind of annoying for the Simpsons, but it was funny and clever and a bit of a pioneer, so I have to give it credit. My opinion is what counts and I am right

dammnit John,

I waited too long to get one of those sought after blue tickets in San Diego and didn't get the chance to say hello to you, and even more importantly... to buy the lost episodes dvd.

I even brought a real live cute girl with me who knows you to try and better my chances of sneaking in line, but even that didnt seem to work.

I gave Marlo a book with some of my sketches in it for you and hope it made it your way.

I'm over at the archive with Steve right now watching some hilarious old terrytoons - It's be great to meet you sometime even for a minute while i'm here in california.

Maybe on Thursday here at the archive since I'm planning on coming back then. But I know you're super busy with all sorts of cool stuff right now, so maybe it'll have to wait.

David Germain said...

There's one of Marlo on my blog right now. Hee hee!! ;)

Oh, John, good news. You're a whole nickel richer today. I just bought the Ren & Stimpy APC collection today. So far I've only watched Naked Beach Frenzy, Stimpy's Pregnant, and The Altruists. Since most of it was great, I'll only point out things I didn't like. It'll take up less space.
I was underwhelmed by Stimpy doing Curly's patented arm gesture in Naked Beach Frenzy. Here, Stimpy only moved his arm. Curly however, would get his entire shoulder into it. Actually, it was more like his entire upper body. Not only that, his arm flowed in a perfect wave almost ballet-like really. Whoever animated that scene with Stimpy should have incorporated that a bit more.

I also didn't care for those long intros before each cartoon. Those would have been better used as audio commentary. Yes, I know you can press a button and skip those intros, but I'd still prefer them elsewhere.

Other than those little nitpicks, great set.

an inspiration to us all.

Oh, another thing I found strangely odd (or oddly strange) were the white Indians in Stimpy's Pregnant. They reminded me of the white Africans in those George of the Jungle episodes and it made me smile.

Well, people say that about John K. too. Of course, many of them have never drawn in their lives. Make of that what you will.

John, so you're the main artist on Big House Blues, right? Im a little confused as to if you did any art on any other episodes. I wanna know the guy that did most of the character animation on Space Madness and Stimpy's Big Day?? Whoever did that animation is AMAZING. I know Carbunkle did the animation, but who within Carbunkle?? Who did the weird french calypso harpsichord music??

:: smo :: said...

stimpy's pregnant? haha even without the ending it's totally an homage to i love lucy...in a twisted sort of way! when ren got in the car to go to the hospital i started cracking up "are they gonna do it? are they gonna do it? THEY DID IT!"

what white Indians?

they are bright red.

David Germain said...

they are bright red.

Yes, but the red was moreso like a caucasian with a sun burn. Natives have somewhat of a maroonish-brown tone to their skin. Believe me, Saskatchewan is pretty much Native central in Canada so I've seen many different examples.

(To any censor monkeys reading this, that statement was not a complaint or anything so save your rants, please).
