By the way that great animation is by Copernicus in Halifax. I am on my way there tomorrow to help finish the Tenacious D video.
Hey you know the scene with the cats on the fence singing? That was all posed out by Katie after she told me she couldn't draw cats or do dialogue acting.
I personally think its great and soo cute and funny!

You remember these posts, don't you?

Is the little black cat in the bucket the hero from Harlem Shuffle?
pretty awesome stuff John! pretty freakin' awesome. Katie's designs look great animated. i like the chewing of the face part. NICE!!!
That clip was pretty cool, I like the happy girl's smile but was sad when the cat bit her face off. Thanks for your support! There is alot of learning left for me to do!
That clip look great. I can't wait to see the rest of the video.
Speaking of Weird Al, all of you should check out my Weird Al post on my blog as well.
Really fantastic stuff John. Well done!
Hey John, watching that video at your house was the greatest day of my life! Completely unreal to watch a Spumco video right in the livingroom of my favorite living cartoonist! Thanks again!
I need to buy that album!
This is the closest thing you're gonna get to Bob Clampett HIMSELF doing a video for Weird Al.
Awesome job guys!!
Her poses were perfect. I love seeing poses i've never seen before and so fluid. Congrats to all of you on such great work! I want to see more Katie.
the clip looks nice!
Al's back with a vengeance, ain't he??
Of course, to some of us - he never left.
Look forward to seeing the video.
I bought the album MIDNIGHT when it came out, because well, it's Weird Al! Come on, people!
Your video is BEAUTIFUL and stands out too much among the other videos. Your's is the only one that seems to be done by cartoonist. Instead of just shapes floating around.
It's great, has so many quick jokes in them, I've gotta watch it again.
BTW, the song from the video is a style parody of the band Cake.

JOHN, THAT WAS AMAZING!!!! Was that Flash Animation?
Hahahahahahaha. The part where he bites the girl's face off is gruesome! More stuff like this! And more weird creatures like in Marooned!
You guys should make a show about metal and blow Metalocalypse out of the water. I have a feeling you could use the same kinda sound track and make way more brutal things happen because you have the skill to do it.
Speaking of which, and this is off-topic AND about Adult Swim (sorry), but there's a show now called Korgoth of Barbaria which is kinda like the Chestaclese idea in the sense that it's a cartoon spoof of Conan the Barbarian. I think it's probably the most entertaining thing on Adult Swim, but I'm sure you and Jim Smith are blowing steam out of your ears.
>You guys should make a show about metal and blow Metalocalypse out of the water. I have a feeling you could use the same kinda sound track and make way more brutal things happen because you have the skill to do it.
I was thinking about this, and I bet John hates metal, except maybe power metal or something that's really really melodic. The best metal is very skilled and technical, but it's got anrrow appeal. I'm glad metal is getting exposure through shows like Metlapocalypse but the execution of the thing was HORRIBLE.
Korgoth was made by Aaron Springer, former Spumco employee.
Now about that clip: It's AMAZING!!! The poses and motions are awesome! The lip sync is perfect to Weird Al's sining, it really looks like the cat is singing, and in FLASH, no less! This is amazing! I also like the gratuitous violence!
Actually "the butcher", that show was created by none other than Aaron Springer who worked on Spumco projects and who I imagine is a friend of that crew. The clips I've seen of that show are pretty funny... I think Bill Wray may have painted some backgrounds for it as well.
I love how the head bobs are splitting the music beat in the fence scene.
Congrats to Katie for adding 'cute, animated cats' to her repertoire.

I can't wait to see the whole thing!
I think yours was the best one of the bunch - really funny and amazingly high quality animation. I hope it does well for both you folks & Al. Keep up the great work!!
Oh, I didn't know you had a blog. Good thing I found it too so I can find this CD. Good stuff.
Don't want to gush or anything, but I've been a fan since the old Ren and Stimpy cartoons that aired on Nickelodeon. Heh! It was the only thing worth watching back then. That and Rocko. ;P
Love the reference to the french lady who had her face eaten off by her cats! Hell you didn't have to tell me to buy AL's CD, I didn't even realise it had a DVD with the cartoons til I got it home. Plympton and the Kricfalusi Krew on one disc - fantastic! The litlle cat in the bucket is a tribute to the little cat from Bob Clampett's Kitty Kornered, right?
Heyoo, those folks in Halifax are doing a pretty darn good job. But hey, what else can you expect from Nova Scotia?
Bravo Katie! I hadn't really seen Katie do something that was not cute girls. She nailed those cats! Amazing how a little nudge can make some people do things they thought they couldn't. It's hard to believe this is Flash (even though you said it was before) it's very fluid and organic. Bravos to Copernicus as well!
-David O.
W T F !! it's great this little short! fabuloso!
I just got the album and had a swell ol' time watching that video. It's just great, it really is. Your oddball sense of humor blends well with Al's, and it's a really entertaining video.
Great work.
John,
great work on weird al's video (katie too!). Could you spare a minute to give me some tips on my pencil test?

Hey John, again I just want to say Thank You for shareing your wise and strong knolege with us with the animation indrustry and construction. Maybe well make great cartoons someday and save the cartoon industry like how you did back in 1990.
_Eric
Hey John! Weird Al was actually just on Tom Green's taped internet talk/call-in show a couple nights ago, and they had a conversation about THIS CARTOON right here. Tom said he would be ecstatic if you'd be a guest on the show. It's taped in Los Angeles at Tom's house and gets tons of viewers, and it'd be some great publicity. You should totally go on and talk about great cartoons!

I personally think it's funny as hell and badass. Notice they've only aired the pilot and haven't done jack to promote it since. Maybe it actually sucks up some of the budget and takes real manhours. It's not the best animation, but it's better than anything else on AS by far.
As for the clip, when and where are we going to get to see the whole thing? I've never seen flash like it. Much smoother.
Hey John,
These past few posts have been absolutely phenomenal!! Very VERY helpful indeed! I needa tell u bout my stuff's been hapenin lately.
I can't wait to see this video in whole! Where can i see it? Katie's girls animated are brilliant and want to see MORE of it! ALso, the cat chewing the girl's head is fascinating. all in all I would say you're the master of cartoon mastication!
This video is hte only time I Like cats. Now it's timw for a Grudge Match!
"CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR"
vs.
"HARLEM SHUFFLE"
Which is the superior John K directed animated cat music video?!?!
Don't drink and post, kids.
"Weird AL", John K., and Katie Rice...so many of my favorite stuff together in one place! This is definitely the best video of the bunch, a really nice compliment to what is a great album. Kudos to all involved and I hope to see another such colaboration one of these days!
Well I'm not sure I'd call those other music videos "great," but I loved the CD itself and your video was by far the best of the animated ones. It didnt seem to be of the quality of the Bjork video, but I imagine that's because of the low budget.
By the by, the "Sweet Young Janet" girly nearly made me need new pants.
I saw the full video yesterday. My favorite thing in it is the absent/dead look in the cat's eyes when he eats the girls. I laugh everytime I think about that.
HIGH-larious.

Hi The Butcher,
You can see the whole thing on Weird Al's new CD/DVD that you can buy from Amazon here!
Watching the video on DVD looks MUCH BETTER than these compressed 12fps dailymotion teasers....
I am appling your advice here-
www.doodleville.blogspot.com
I hope it's working?
John I got to say, I love the lip sync and how Ciggerates bit the chick's face off.
I would really like it if you one of these days teamed up with Danny Antonucci and possibly Matt Groening one of these days.
I believe that it would be spitaculair!
What do you think John?

Hey you know the scene with the cats on the fence singing? That was all posed out by Katie after she told me she couldn't draw cats or do dialogue acting.I personally think its great and soo cute and funny!
Wow! Katie drew cats. And they were BOY cats yet. She really made a breakthrough right there. ;)
got the cd mostly just to get the video and it's definitely worth it! katie's drawing are even better when they're moving! really cool to see al in his studio too.
no disrespect intended towards al, but, well, some of the other videos were pretty crappy... my guess is that al was just experimenting with the dual disc format and wanted to give his fans some "bonus content" which i can appreciate...
but, well, okey, what i really am curious about is: did the crappy videos on the weird al cd have a similar budget to yours?
really to us fans, a new john k cartoon is priceless, like finding a new DaVinci painting or something, but it's just frustrating to think you're ready willing and able to entertain the masses and the networks aren't throwing millions at you to make more george liquor and jimmy cartoons!
the sad thing about this is, i didn't find the album to be good enough to warrant a purchase. i used to be a huge fan of weird al, but he just doesn't seem to be quite as on top of his game as he used to be. HOWEVER, the video you and katie made is really great. it is by far the best piece of content on the whole disk (including the other videos and songs). my only slight complaint is that i think i can see where they dumbed down the drawings of cigarettes the cat sometimes, but it truly is an amazing feat of Flash animation. I wish the stuff that is on TV was animated that well.

Wow, are you kidding? The album is great!
The R.Kelly parody "Trapped In The Drive-Thru" is worth the price of the disc alone!
The Beach Boys style song "Pancreas" is a great one too. So is the polka.... so is the Green Day parody... so is the Rage Against The Machine parody.... so is the....
Wow, Evan. I may have felt that way about a couple single releases in the past - but not this one.
I haven't heard the whole album - but from the good chunk I have heard - it sounds great!
I'd proudly endorse it.
(And I haven't even seen the video yet)
- Corbett
I´m still laughing for the cat who bites the girl´s face and eat it.
hahaha
sorry my english
very funny and bizarre stuff
The kitty's feet in the garbage can were adorable! (geez, I sound like I'm on Cute Overload)
I would love to see John K & Katie Rice have more fun with Al! This video is by far the best, but I may be biased now that I'm a regular reader of this blog. Oh well, it's been getting rave reviews amongst my other Al fan friends. Kudos again guys!
that cartoon booty kicks ass (pun intended?)!! i made the mistake of showing the weird al video clip to my 6 year old daughter. i hit play and by the time i realized that face biting part was coming up it was too late. i think she's gonna have nightmares now? oops. ;) i just love the way these cartoon women wiggle, jiggle and bounce... oh my. even when they're still frames, the line work is so nice, so animated. :p *sigh* i'm somewhat deprived by the sounds of it eh? ha-ha.
John, I have a few questions regarding you and Matt Groening.
Just curious as a big fan of both works and as a young historian.
I heard from The Simpsons Season 4 commentary on "The Front (episode)"
that you were harsh on The Simpson writters in the press? And durring season 4, 1 satire on you and 1 parody on Ren & Stimpy.
Just of curiousity, what was that about?
And I remember hearing that you wanted to contact Matt to fix up The Simpsons to make them look more professional?
Plus I heard rumors that you and Matt worked on the Boo Boo Runs Wild Special together even though it's not mentioned in the credits.
_Eric ;)
You are the best maaann !!
hé hé !
I am a big fan of your work !!
If u want to look some of my jobs go on www.design-hero.Com
You'll see some of your influance on my graphic style !
Mutch luck for you !
Olivier,
I know all of you animator types out there probably know the answer to this one.. i can't find it any where online: there once was a cartoon about a squiggly line and ball (very similar in style (background effects and such to the Ren and Stimpy 1950's type thing) It could've been produced anywhere between the 40's to 50's. I want to show it in a drawing/2d design class I'm teaching, but I can't locate any info about it. If you, John, or anyone else has this info, I would love to know.
You and Katie did a nice job John. The video was really well animated. I'm a Weird Al kick, and I saw your video out of pure dumb luck. I did find it a little extreme with he face biting, but its a cartoon, and I'm sure its all in good fun.
I love Weird Al. He's funny, intelligent, brave, irreverent, sarcastic and his music is fantastic to listen to, whether it's a parody or not!
