My buddy Joe Horn produces Jorge's favorite cartoon show with Andre 6,000. Last year he asked Katie Rice and I to design some concepts for one of the music videos. We did a big stack of drawings. Here are a few.

We tried different styles. To warm up, I did the characters in a Hanna Barbera style. These are kinda bland.

Katie, as usual did some super cute drawings of the girl characters.

Here, I'm just starting to warm up. The drawings got weirder as we kept at it.

and my caricature of her.

Wanna see more? There are a ton of them.

katie's stuff blinds me with cuteness
I really like the last three, but personally the others do nothing. The first Hanna Barbera one is pretty cool, too. Not that I can possibly do any better, that's just my opinion.
Let's see more!
Knowing your opinion of rap I wasn't sure if you would even do commision work for any rappers at all. I guess as long as they're paying and aren't at all unreasonable about what you can produce, a client is a client.
That is a GREAT El Kabong picture. If Quick Draw ever makes it onto DVD, that would make excellent cover art. B)
Yeah Yeah Yeah John!!!!
PLEASEEEE!!!!
tell us moreeeeee!!
show us moreee!!!!!
It is kind of odd that a World Without Music would look somewhat appealing.
Post them all!
These are all great!!!!!! I like the first drawing the best!
I remember seeing your segment "Life Without Music." While I liked the designs, I felt the animation wasn't up to par as your usual stuff. It could just be the quality of the video though that I saw on YouTube for it, but then again I found your flash animations more impressive overall even when they were converted to streaming YouTube format.
My favorite bit was the expressions when the drummer boys' drums disappeared and he chased after the musical note into the city. His reactions and the timing for it was priceless. I also loved Katies' design for that girl who opens up the heart on her chest.
The storyboarding also worked overall and went with the lyrics well, although not as random and exciting as your "Classico" video from Tenacious D. Great job of balancing the humor in the drawings with the serious sad tone of the song.
I found the YouTube video of it right here:

We didn't have anything to do with the animation Sean. I haven't even seen it.
Looked like a fun drawing jam. Thanks for sharing!
Hey John, in the Chicago report, you mentioned "The Children's Crusade" - and way back in december you posted part of it and said: "Later this week I'll put up another clip from Life Sucks. Keep your eyes peeled!". They've been peeled but I still can't find it. Is that something you only show live? If so, please come to Pittsburgh.
Crud, I guess this is why it wasn't as good as your usual stuff then :). Hahahahah. Once again, good stuff on you and Katie's part John! :)
Oh, those are very nice. 1-6 are among my favourite, then I like some of the Katie's ones (especially the first one) and the one you did after seeing Katie's work, the black boy, that one is great, very abstract expression. The fatty ones at the end, I don't really like those. The Hanna Barbera ones are cute, but kinda generic.
About the video I agree with Sean. Best part is the drummer boy, no doubt.
Of course I want to see more!
oh, please show more :D love it all
Its always nice to see katies drawings posted she doesnt update her blog often. my all around favorite was dancin in a buisiness suit
wonderful drawings and flow of ideas!
its very inspirational to see you guys collaborate so well.
i wanna see what happens next!
ha, I love these. I admit I enjoy the show, but the artwork variety in each video really shines. I definately wanna see more.
I also just noticed the blonde kid in the baseball field that looked up did a Milt Gross style outtake. What a way to throw in the reference John!
These are great! i want to suck up katie's magic and use it for my own. Also please more! I like the progression of the stuff slowly getting weirder.
what happened tothe blog at bottom side?
That "Booty" girl is great!
Wow! Alot better then the shows crappy designs.
Beautiful line work on your sketches John! For loose sketches it seems like no line is wasted.
Bring us more!
i like those a lot :3 the one that says BOOTY is funny
pHey! I've never even seen that show and I only like a few of his songs. They're too melodic and poppy and avante-garde.
But the finished sequence, I liked but I wish John had been more involved with the animation because it looked like they toned it down somewhat.
Joe showed me these at cartoon network last year, I've been waiting a whole year to see them again! That Fred Flintstone one really stuck with me.
Beautiful, beautiful drawings!
Great drawings. Be glad it was through joe & CN, cause that Tom Brady guy still hasn't paid me for the work I did on Andrea 3000. Its been almost three years.
Very nice designs (though I’m surprised anyone considers that show among their “favorites”). But FYI, Andre is a “3000” model, not a “6000.”
alex: I think john was being sracastic abotu the "favorite" bit.
John: Yeah i think it's "Andre 3000". unless he upgraded. I assume it's just a typo cuz 3 and 6 are above each other on the numberpad.
I'm shocked you'd have any involvement with rap music.
It takes no talent, no creativity or originality and forces more of the bad degenerate side of life (that you say you are sick of) down societys throats.(or anyone within earshot)
Personally I detest rap music, its not even music, how hard is it to spout out a bunch of profain, hate laced tirades to a synthetic repetitive beat.I keep hoping the shit will go away but it looks like its here for good.
What about all the black singers and musicians with real talent like Johnny Guitar Watson,Little Willie John,Wynonie Harris,Walter Jackson,Donald Byrd, etc.
It seems like we havent made any good music since the 50's and 60's
I can't resist looking at anything both John and Katie are involved in.
I really like that fat kid in the first one, and that joker girl standing all sassy-like.
john, is it just me or does drawing number four ( going down ) have serious -- i believe the word you used was -- "toon 'tude"?
glad to see you're talking about your 80's mighty mouse style. i see it re-done on tiny toons and it looks nothing like you. maybe it's eddie? who knows.
John,
Sorry not on subject, but I thought
to share this clip, it's a 3d version of your style and edge. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mc-7YlBYWc4&NR=1
I dont know who made it I just ran into it surfing the net. And knew you'd get a kick out of it.
I read this great post later for sure
tho.
Thanks
