Here is an unbelievably cool commercial for something nearly as important in our lives as cigarette foil. Salt!
This commercial has everything you could want in an animated spot.
Great design, funny and inventive animation and really creative special effects.
Part 2

This is great stuff to copy if you are teaching yourself to animate....JoJo!

Makes me want to roll up a spoonful of weather proof salt in cigarette foil and chew it to bits in a hurricane.
What do you think?

Mmmmm Salt. I really love the salt covered kid in the end. Salt is crunched from mineral crystal and I love how it is conveyed in the diamond shaped pieces when the kid is covered in salt.
what do you mean when you say some stuff is good to copy if we're learning to animate? You mean copying specific frames or trying to replicate the whole movement?
Both.
All those effects blew my mind when you played this one for me. I wasn't expecting it at all! The kid has a lot of fun poses and expressions too.
I've never wanted to dump a bucket of salt on my head more. What a cool commercial!
Why is this commercial taking so long to load? I have a fast connection. By the way, I have been reading this blog for some time now.
yo yo yo salt's really tite!this commercial seems sort of abstract in a scence but when it all comes down to it it is awesome! i like it when his face turns all tribal when the salt pours on his head! It once agian shows the wonderfullness of animation when properly drawn!
Diamond Crystal Salt is made from the shiniest salt on the planet.
Fellahs why not have that engagement ring for the fiancee crowned with a small condensed ball of salt instead of an expensive diamond-She wont know the difference!
I believe smear frames (when executed at this caliber) are the single highest form of artistic expression ever.
This cartoon stands out from the other UPA ones I think- the ideas in it are just so cool! I wish salt would glitter like that!!!
I think I looked like that as a kid-except replace salt with brown sugar.
(another) great article! They're always very insightful.
Curious tho -- you say: "The timing of all this animation is great. Lots of contrasts."
I don't understand...contrasts in TIMING?
Hey Mr. John,
When are you gonna say shit about the Rat movie that came out. Everyone's going ga-ga over it. Everyone went ga-ga over Cars and that was a shit movie. What up John? I know you don't like that shit. Please go into why these movies are shit, you sound too nice in these post about cool animations. Let's fuel up some of this shit talk. They're even good reviews for the surfing penguins movie. Please John, would you rip these movies new assholes?
Yep.
Muff.
Don't anyone click my stupid account, I don't blog shit. I'm not smart enough to write about anything. I'm really, really stupid.
Thanks for posting this.
It looks and feels so fresh!!!
Cool beans, Johnny.
I think I actually remember this commercial.
hahaha i love wacky endings! sweet animation and poses. i totaly agree with the retardation bit hahaha
This commercial was animated by Emery Hawkins for John Hubley's Storyboard Prods. You're right it's a great spot with great animation.
How do you know for sure?
Hi John, the link to this seems to be broken, if it is possible for you to re-upload it, it would be much appreciated, I'm dying to see it! Also the post of Scribners dog commercial seems to be broken too. Many thanks for this amazing blog!
Just curious, did you find these on the Thunderbean "comercials" and "mid century modern" DVD's?
