Wow! Monkeys with moxie. Whomever came up with this is bad at living life and has no business designing characters.

"Vanguard Animation is a film production and intellectual property development company primarily focused on the computer generated animation feature film segment. Vanguard is primarily a creative company: a producer of the kind of storytelling that can only be done in CG animation and targeted to the widest possible family audience."

haha what the hell

Steve said...

Thus proving that to a computer animator, all chimps look the same.

lastangelman said...

... and then the Black Monolith quietly stole away, and the monkeys went back to the trees.

Brad said...

Its like a car wreck, its so damn awful you can't look away.

I don't know what's worse though, this or the pictures they put on the covers of the "Entourage" box sets. Anybody with me on that?

I get the same feeling looking at this that I do when I see the ad for the new "Alvin & The Chupmunks" movie... Equals parts horror and morbid curiosity. Will I ever watch it? Most likely not, unless I'm looking after someone's kid and that's the only thing they want to watch... Hopefully I can sneak in the dvd for "Battle Royale" instead.

Evan said...

I can almost hear the execs say, "can you give these chimps more attitude?"

Josh "Just What the Doctor Ordered" Heisie said...

WHYYYYYYYY??!?!?

Monkeys in space are NOT funny! Monkeys in human attire are NOT funny! Monkeys with cocky facial expressions are NOT funny!!!!

Roberto said...

Is this (a link to the Vanguard Animation Space Chimps website) 'tude as well? It looks a bit like it.

Roberto said...

And I can't see the second image.

Lyris said...

Why did this expression become allowed to be copied over and over? Do the people who do it actually think it looks cool?

Shawn said...

Aaaarrgghh!!!!..The world has gone straight to shit when even monkeys can't be funny anymore! Lancelot Link is rolling in his grave!

Chris said...

From their site:
"Space Chimps" is a comedy adventure about two NASA chimps that are sent to a galaxy far, far away. One chimp has "The Right Stuff,"---

What kid is gonna get the reference to "The Right Stuff" I'm an old man and I never even saw that movie.
The makers of this move should have an anvil dropped on his balls!

Chris, obviously this movie has something for everyone!

Adam H said...

Is it natural to clench both your teeth & fists after a look at that?
Although I do get a laugh knowing that someone at some point actually thought this was a good idea.

*fart noise*

C. A. M. Thompson said...

Actually monkeys in space are funny when they're flinging their poo in zero gravity.

Although I'm sure this movie will figure out a way to ruin that.

kate yarberry said...

Monkey's suck. They are creepy and eat bugs, and I don't like them. I'm sure they feel similarly about me.
Oh except the Carry Grant film "Monkey Business" which was actually well written, played, and produced. Only someone as great as Grant could make monkey's cool. Not some asshole with Renderman experience.

Spizzerinktum said...

EUW. What a hideous mess.

Mike said...

my friend's monkey used to throw feces at people.

But he never threw them with that kind of expression.

pinkboi said...

That's why Japanese stuff is better sometimes! They are pretty good at giving their characters retardation when needed, rather than Americun (sic.) 'tude.

Bill Field said...

OK---Even THIS isn't original-- anyone remember Space Monkeys- a really good series that was so good that, of course, a decade later, someone thought to make it into a cg-iagntic piece of crapi-TUDE.

Aggie said...

*sniff* Another part of my soul has died.

Ironhorse said...

It's no coincidence that "tude" is just a single letter switch from becoming "turd."

Chris E. said...

Monkeys in space and attitude? How freakin' original!

Oh! And that chimp with the banana-shaped communicator--He looks really cool.

I hope people know that I'm being sarcastic...

kelvinkao said...

Monkeys in space... not funny.
Bears... hm... maybe...

I are da cute one said...

awwww MONKEYS!! ^.^ I wuv monkeys! *pokes*

steve said...

hahaha well SOMEONE had to do it. how would know the good without the bad?

Emmett said...

Truthfully, I am sick of monkeys.

I happen to love 'tude. However, I like it better when the characters have expressive faces. The monkeys all look alike, which is something I dislike intensly.

I find this movie to be terrible idea already. The poster is badly colored as well. Red and grey gives a feeling of boredom.

Mr. Semaj said...

Pixar's Wall-E is going to easily kick this movie's ass.

Mark Stroud said...

Look its bland monkeys with attitude, in Space! Yet another cgi talking animal movie I'm not going to see.

Josh "Just What the Doctor Ordered" Heisie said...

Alright, I suppose monkeys in space CAN be funny...but not when they "act like humans"! Monkeys in their natural state are funny...flinging poo and wrecking stuff.

...monkeys dressed as humans are not.

William said...

Speechless.

William said...

This has all the artistic power of those awesome Tweety Bird shirts you see on women less adverse to Mu-Mus- the ones with Tweety's hat on backwards and arms folded with the wacky words alongside "Get Out Of My Way I'm Ready To Shop".

PCUnfunny said...

Of all fuckin' animals, drawing MONKEYS WITH TUDE ? ARGH!

CGsucks said...

AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGG!!! Chimps with tude! Hideous, disgusting, vile, carnage, gore, rape, death! When will all these horrific films end. I can practically smell how this film will go. The main chimp is a loser monkey who no one takes seriously. He somehow gets chosen to go into space. All the other astrochimps think he's going to screw up. Then something bad happens and he saves the day. It may end there, but the story could continue with the loser monkey getting arrogant. Then something worse happens and he needs the whole crew to work together to save the day.
Ill do some research and see if im right.
P.s the dvd might come with an alternate ending. The monkeys all get transferred from NASA to experimental aids treatment. Ho Ho :D

No.... just.... No....

Savage Manatee said...

I suppose monkeys could be funny, monkies in space maby. I know that this movie with monkeys in space will suck. The one "funny" gag in the movie will be played over and over again in the preview. My kids will want to see it so bad. If I take them to see it they will hate it because they have already seen the only "gag" 100 time on TV by the time it comes out.

I think that this movie would have been a lot eisier to make though if they didn't make the same exact main charicter 5 times. very odd.

3d animation needs to just go away if they're going to keep making crap like this. No wonder all kids are such little bastards these days.

wow, a banana phone ...how original :/

Haha, I know some people animating on that movie. Let's just say the money was a major factor in thier decision. Cause they sure aren't there for the concept. "Come on, Chimp's in Space! It's gold, pure gold!" It's funny that everyone working on the movie knows it's going to be garbage yet it continues to be made. They keep re-writing and re-working it hoping that somehow it'll magically fix it. Hey, it worked for their last project "Happily N'ever After". That did well right? The only reason they have money to make their movies is through shady practices. They are using that German tax break loophole that Uwe Boll uses, haha.

Brian B said...

Finally. I've been waiting for an animated film to put monkeys in space since I.. was a child!

Blaed said...

i can imagine the ad designer..."ooo! How about they just float in the middle of a FLAT BLUE FREAKING BACKGROUND!! AAAAAHHH MY EEEEYYYYEEESSS!!!...there that looks pretty good."

Tool said...

"It's funny that everyone working on the movie knows it's going to be garbage yet it continues to be made."

yes some people need to eat and find that better than being a janitor or shuffling papers. i would.

baggersteve said...

Space monkeys and apes can be very entertaining. The space chimp from the comic book 'The Filth' is a great example.

However, John obviously nailed it. That picture makes my sould go numb. It looks awful, the movie will be awful. It would be hilarious if there weren't zillions of dollars invested in it.

I am sure one or all of those computer-generated chimp-shaped avatars will 'find himself' or whatever.

Savage Manatee said...

I think the biggest problem with 3D animation is that most people going into the field has a goal to make everything as real as posible. This is fine for special effects in a live action movie but that attitude just doesn't work for fully animated cartoon. it also doen't work if you try to insert say 3d superhero dogs or musical chipmunks into a live action movie. If you look at traditional animation most animators want to make cartoons. There perception of cartoons may get a little skewed along the way but I see that as their goal. 3D animaton will never be good until they realize that photorealism is not always a good idea.

one word, _______ . can you guess what it is yet?

That movie is so blah that it doesn't even capture my attention enough to hate it.

Ethan said...

Fucking crap. I'd rather watch Captain Simian & the Space Monkeys.

dave said...

this looks god freaking awful. made by the same geniuses who brought us that WWII pigeon movie.

thanks for picking another winner to represent cg animation john! real fair!

dave said...

ok goddamit. CG IS A MEDIUM. A PENCIL IS TOO. i love how so many people think that theres some sort of 'make toon' button on the keyboard that makes these god awful pieces of cg tripe. its not. actual living breathing 'artists' are responsible for crafting that, just like living, homanoid 'artists' are responsible for pieces of S like Cinderella 2.

wanna see a good cg monkey?
check this out.

You can almost already hear all the lame dialog refs to Planet of the Apes too... "Take your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape!"

Some apes, it seems, are more equal than others.

This one is on the subject of monkeys. This one is very popular in the world of cg. It is done by a school in France.

baggersteve said...

Another problem with these chimps is that they seem to me to have about as much size and weight as the toys that will invariably be sold of them, not real chimps. Compare it with our old friend Foghorn Leghorn, who seems like he has a lot of mass, a lot more than the average rooster (which are never as big as dogs, anyway!)

I believe that one of the points of still life drawing and painting is to be able to make, say, a drawing of an apple look as heavy and as round as an apple is supposed to look. I think this is a good point to make because it backs up John's continuing calls for a return to the basics.

Jim Rockford said...

GREAT! Thanks Vangaurd...For flinging crap at the the masses!

Animal Qwacker said...

I don't think there is enough ass in the world to liken this to.
I'm each character has a celebrity voice that sounds exactly like their own voice (because why should they extend themselves for the ridiculous money they make off these things?).

Alexandra said...

You know it's funny, a studio came to my school two years ago, talking about this movie, well... they just said it's called space chimps and that "it's about chimps in space". I was beginning to think they weren't making it anymore because I had heard nothing about it since then.

I'll give it the benefit of the doubt until I see the trailer. And hey, there were chimps in space. They deserve our respect and pants.

WTF is 'tude supposed to say to a prospective audience? You'll identify with us 'cause we're self-confident alpha apes who just might kick your ass?

If cartoons could just kick each other's ass we wouldn't need false advertising.

This is an interesting perspective on the stylings and reasons behind CG

John X. Spizikski said...

Oh come on! You just look at this and you can tell that this will PROBABLY suck.

I mean...do they even have a FAINT idea of what chimps and monkeys look like, or did they just watch Planet of the Apes and think, "This is it"?

Seriously, people. What the hell?

John X. Spizikski said...

Oh, and the banana phone; HOW F**KING ORIGINAL. I've NEVER seen THAT before? My God.

REALLY??! Has it REALLY come down to this? God.
