I just wanted to say that you have influenced my artwork greatly. Lindsay.
TWITCH & WRITHE!! Elwy and the Tree Weasels are great! Another gem of a cartoon!
FANTASTIC. I remember the Tree Weasels from their Mighty Mouse airing 20 years ago now. Till recently I wondered if they were real or just a screwed up childhood memory. In 20 years they're going to be making crappy CG movies of all your stuff, John. God help us all.
Very disturbing, yet funny episode of Mighty Mouse! I love the Lynne Naylor girls in the beginning. Was "Mashy the Pup," based on a dog that belonged to Janice Karman (Bagdasarian's widow)? At that time I heard Bagdasarians' and Bakshis' studio shared the same building where the widow would let her dog come over and poop all over at Bakshis' studio.I also heard on one of the dog's pooping endeavors, it was run over by a vehicle outside the studio where you guys at Bakshi celebrated and made it into the narrator in the Elwee and the Tree Weasel parody cartoon. Is this story true?
Jeff Read,They won't be making cgi movies of John's stuff in the future, instead they will make genetic abominations of his stuff. The CGI stuff by then just won't be realistic enough ;). XDI shudder to even think of a live-action/cgi version or Ren and Stimpy.
the dog was owned by janice karman, the wife of ross bagdasarian jr. both still very much alive and still running the chipmunk empire. ross b senior, who originated the chipmunks and a lot of weird pop songs, died a long time ago, leaving the chipmunks to his son.
I have many of these gems on vhs. terrible quality as they were recorded the old fashioned way (pre-digital). i don't even think it was through a cable. it may well have been through the air. anyway, treasured (and what's the video equivelant of "dog eared?").my favorites were "night of the bat bat" and "don't touch that dial." the scooby doo and robotech parodies were a turning point in my development as an artist. no bull.
I'd ove to hear the story behind that cartoon. Was it a real barn-burner behind the scenes?Oh, and a big happy half-century + 2. I don't have any birthday drawings of you on my blog this year. I'm much much too busy for that. Maybe I can make up for it later. But for now, I'll just give you this birthday wish. I hope you save a leprechaun's life so that he gives you his pot of gold which you can then use to finance any cartoon ideas you have. B)
"In 20 years they're going to be making crappy CG movies of all your stuff, John. God help us all." -Just the thought made me puke! Yuck!
This is my first time visiting your blog and i am sure to visit again in the future because i like your articles on the old cartoons that i watched when i was young. :) Keep them articles coming
This stuff looks great, I cant wait to know more about it. :)
I agree with the first comment from lindsay, you have greatly influenced me the same. I practice everyday as much as I can.
"In 20 years they're going to be making crappy CG movies of all your stuff, John. God help us all."In 20 years John will be in his 70's, I'm pretty sure he'll be around to stop abominations like that.I'd say in about 50 years. But who knows what we'll have to view by then.
Happy Birthday John! You are a true Hero to me, sir, and I wish you the very best.Your Buddy,Art F.
Happy Birthday John!!! Here's the birthday card for you... sorry for drawing you so off-model :) I made it in a great hurry and under some difficult conditions, and I hope it's not too crappy, despite mistakes. Have a wonderful time today!
Hi everyonethanks for the swell birthday wishes!Great picture Hammerson. I wish I had a chin like that!
In 20 years DIC will locate John's dad, who'll still be living as an angry head in a jar, and get him to give them the world rights to John's name, then they'll produce THE WACKY WORLD OF JOHN K. using all new garbage cartoons, which they'll get Eddie to direct with no time or money. This kind of thing has happened before.
happy birthday John K!!best of luck!julian
Happy Birthday!piñata!side view!Have a great day!
I didn't realize it was your birthday until now. Happy birthday! I wish you well.
Hmm. Hello, John? This is...well...John. Another John, not your hybrid twin with seventy five chins and 35 alternative appendages screaming like a drugged howler monkey.Anyways, I love reading your blog and am somewhat a fan of your work with Spumco International and collaborations with "The New Mighty Mouse" and "Fritz the Cat" creator Ralph Bakshi and love your realistic/cartoony style of drawing.Anyways, I've been wanting to message you for some time to see what you thought of my idea of a comic book premise for my graphic novel "Chancre Scolex Middle School" and wanted some actual critiquing of my work from a real cartoonist. So, I've decided to message you on your entry "Coming Attraction", so here's my link.First off, my blog is:http://questionnorm.blogspot.comAnd my email ishttp://email@example.comPlease tell me what you think.
Happy Birthday John,I hope you get what you want someday and that you'll have a studio for yourself to flourish and beat the competition. The world needs more people like you.
Oh, and by the way, Happy Birthday, John!! Best wishes man. Happy for you, and if anyone wants to make a CGI abomination of Ren and Stimpy or ANYTHING that you've made, then as God is my witness, they shall soon feel the true meaning of PAIN!!!-J.P.
HAPPY HAPPY, JOY JOY, BIRTHDAY JOHN!
I didn't know it was John's birthday today! It's the day after my birthday as well.I don't know what to wish you except the thing you seem to want most: FUN!
Happy Birthday John !

Best birthday wishes from me too!
Happy Birthday, you old talented Buzzard! In case if you are interested, I had recently done a post on Ub Iwerks on my blog. I know you are really busy, but I was wondering, if you have the time to read it and tell me if I had done my Homework? Thanks, and I hope those Birthday candles don't burn down your house.
Is ren and stimpy making fun of me and my old friend joe?
I already have some idea of the genesis of "Mighty's Benefit Plan".From http://www.harrymccracken.com/blog/my-intended-audience-was-everybody/"'Elwy and the Tree Weasels' was an idea that Bob Jacques and I had at lunch. On the way to lunch in the car, we were laughing about his experiences on the Bagdasarian picture. And I said, 'wouldn't it be cool to make a cartoon about this!' So we started making fun of the Chipmunks…just a bunch of jokes knocking back and forth. After lunch, I went to Ralph and said 'Hey, why don't we do a takeoff on the Chipmunks,' and pitched the idea to him there. The whole story was basically figured out at lunch. And he said, 'Great! I love it.'"It would be interesting if you told us some of Bob Jacques's experiences on the Chipmunks movie.
Happy late birthday man. Thanks again for keeping up on such a kick ass blog.
