I definitely agree with you on that, John. These Flintstones framegrabs (many of them were drawn by Carlo Vinci) prove that you a need huge budget is not needed to have funny drawings.
That "squiggly" Vinci animation from "Cock-A-doodle Huck" could have worked just as well to prove your point, though (this is not a complaint).
I have a pair of questions: Why is this post titled "Enough Already!"? And what are those live action pictures from?
I always found it funny when Fred and Barney turned around without necks. Scenes like the tenth and third from last make up most of my memories of The Flintstones.
Would funny cartoons have more competition now then during the Flintstone's era? Nowadays we have ebaum's world which just posts videos other people made. Running a site like that can't be expensive.
I'm assuming in the fifties home videos and submitting them was a little more cumbersome, and there probably wasn't as many. Nowadays why make a cartoon when you could start a website like Ebaum's world for cheaper and just sift through, and post funny home videos? I'm not saying funny cartoons are obsolete - but I think there's way more funny stuff to compete with cartoons now.
Some really great pics here, although the one with the medicine cabinet looks dead to me. Quite a variety in the inking style too. That thick line has to be more expensive, right?
Out of curiosity, does a photo of Eddie without a funny face exist? His mom must have despaired at his school photos.
The reason cartoons stopped looking like these early Flintstones is because everything aspect of production has to pass through so many hands that the life is sucked out from any form of visual creativity. As the old expression goes--"a camel is a horse put together by a committee".
It just seems to me that if you don't have a huge budget you should rely even more on funny drawings because they don't cost any more than the sucky ones, but are much more cost effective.

um, that pose with Fred kicking Barney at the pool table is more "funny...whaaa?..." than "funny...ha-ha!" What's going on with Fred's groin area? That makes me feel funny.
I could notice one thing: among the scenes from The Flintstones animated by the legendary Kenneth Muse, I could notice something rare: a commercial from Alka-Seltzer with Fred Flintstone (also animated by Kenneth Muse) - which was carried in the American televised media - also was included there.

Some of the old Flintstones toons had some genuinely funny stuff. Sometimes I couldn't pin it down, but now I realize it was the choice of "body English" for the characters.
