Grim in Barnacle Bill

BARNACLE BILL

Grim did the scenes with Betty and Bimbo making out on the couch and the scenes with Bimbo being chased through the rain. Genius!
I got these frame grabs off a youtube clip. There are much weirder ones even than these but I couldn't freeze the ones I wanted. But watch the cartoon and see some crazy stuff!
This is Grim with no rules except to have fun.
He drew Betty kinda ugly in this one for some reason. She looks really cute in Mysterious Mose.
Early animation was expected by everyone - producers, animators and audience to be imaginative. Grim really delivered.
You gotta see Betty and Bimbo make out on the couch! Pure cartoon magic!

This pussy has some really amazing lips.http://duck-walk.blogspot.com/2006/04/rubber-hose-animationbarnacle-bill.html

If anyone has a good copy of this cartoon, please make some frame grabs!

man alive! it's so frustrating to watch this stuff on youtube. a shitty internet connection can ruin the timing of a good cartoon, and that's what i'm working on.

i have some animation and layout work to do this weekend, and my internet connection's off, so i was HOPING to get some of this juicy stuff in, but nothin' doin' i guess.

s'pose i'll just have to make due with that all-clampett looney tunes disc i bought last weekend.

- trevor.

ps: thanks as always john!

pps: please post more shit about layout! more manuals please please please!

I like these early Betty Boop cartoons where she looked more like a dog. Genius stuff.

Wow John, this stuff is amazing. That cartoon is sooooo crazy. Makes you wonder what happened to all the imagination that used to go into cartoons. Thanks a lot for posting this, it's been awhile since I've looked at Grim's old stuff.

Delightful!!! :) I love Fleischer, haha!

To get better framgrabs from YouTube videos, I've been converting them to QuickTime, like this:

1. Download the video with www.keepvid.com
2. Use www.media-convert.com to convert it to QuickTime

I'm looking for a better quality version of the cartoon but I bet someone else will beat me to it, heh.

Oh, also there are several Betty Boop cartoons at archive.org:

All through this I kept flashing back to that old Benny Goodman recording where Joe Venuti is calling him "Barnacle Bill the shithead" throughout the song.

Best thing I ever heard on NPR, I'll tell you what...

Hey John! :)

I captured about 75 frames and put them on flickr:

If you want more just let me know :)

Certainly a cartoon worthy of study, wow!!

"As an animator, I don't think any animator should ever condemn another animator's way of making a living. But I can criticize it as an art form, and I can criticize what it does to my medium, without criticizing the man. I don't say he's wrong and I'm right; I'm saying that if I weren't an animator, in my opinion he'd still be wrong"

Nothing to do with the post, just a keen observation from a Chuck Jones interview. Boy, imagine if he had a blogger account in the 70's. What a great resource it is to have what we have today in communication.

One observation I can point out is that Chuck Jones, Ralph Bakshi, and John K, seem to have an overall alike opinion on animation based on available information. A wealth of knowledge amongst different generations of cartoonist. I would like to know if John ever met Chuck and if Chuck had any opinions of Ren and Stimpy or Ralph for that matter.

i do love this cartoon! i like how when fleischer remakes a cartoon too, it's not the same cartoon like how some warner brothers' were. they reuse this song and make a popeye with it, but it's a totally different story and characters and everything! they must have loved this song!

Hey John, I just posted a large number of frame grabs from the couch scene, at the Classic Cartoons blog. You can see it HERE . I think this is all Grim Natwick's animation. If you need any screenshots from the other parts of this cartoon, I'll be glad to help (though I won't be able to post additional stuff before monday).

Hey Jhon, you can download youtube clips with OrbitDownloader, then if you dont have a good player to get framegrabs get SMP(Simple Media Player) so you can go trough the clip frame by frame..
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=302151
there's a tut to take screenshots of anything in video quite easily

Hm maybe my link didn't work, here is another try.

But hammerson's framegrabs are really great! :)

It certainly is pure cartoon magic. All the jokes are visual, everything is alive, and its all musically timed. That's cartoon magic.

I also love this early Betty Boop cartoons, they are a lot better than the later ones! There were some in which she looked like a human that were fantastic too (Minnie The Moocher) but lately they became less interesting. They became more tame too, there were less sexy innuendos.

This one is fantastic, hilarious stuff. Why is it so difficult to find the really good cartoons on dvd?

i love your blog!

is amazing!!

i was just reading some of the comments about framegrabs, so i converted the whole video into stills. it only takes about 3 minutes for the youtube video. there's 13,600 or so jpegs so i can't post them or anything, so if anyone would like to see them i could send certain parts. i just thought i would save everyone the trouble of having to manually take screenshots.

This cartoon is pure Fleischer fun! The "Barnacle Bill" song and the animation (especially those Natwick drawings) add to it.

I agree about that pussy. Great lips, indeed.

HAR HAR HAR !!!!!! I loved all the random objects coming to life but the adult jokes really killed me. Betty was a ho in this cartoon waiting to service young sailors.

You should check out "Old Man Of The Mountain." Cab Calloway does a neat little dance and the Old Man of the Mountain is animated over it.

I'm sure John K. and many of you have seen it, but anyone who hasn't should check it out.
