The characters are largely disappointing to me; other than Donald's nephews and the crocodile (and Boo Boo, I guess), the props and backgrounds in these are way more aesthetically pleasing than the main characters...
it's understandable why mickey would be smiling as he's hunting indian donald, but why is the duck smiling?
it's almost surreal to see mickey with a gun. i know it used to happen semi-frequently, but the nancies that run cartoons have pretty much forbid that with the cute stuff.

I remember seeing an old "Walt Disney Presents" show once, where they show Frontierland at Disneyland. At the fort, they give out cap guns to all the kids. Then they stage an Indian attack and have the kids shoot at the Indians that try to attack the fort. I don't think something like that would go over too well today.
If only billboards were in this style... they could be advertising expired milk or discount jugs of turpentine, and I'd be rushing to the store right now.
The old H-B records also had great cartoon paintings. LPs like "The Flintstones Sing Mary Poppins" & "Doggie Daddy Reads Augie Doggy Pinocchio" had beautiful detailed art.
Beautiful colors and choices... staging's real easy to understand, the characters are rounded but still somewhat flat... lovely.
Only, I gotta agree with Ted, the characters are looking pretty mushy, except the Donald book. So Bugs looks kinda eeeesshh! but Elmer at least looks like Robert McKimson drew him some time in 1969.
Say, where can a fella purchase these books? I hate the selection of Little Golden's on eBay... they're only like ten years old.
These are neato! I love the textures. Being colour-blind, I can't tell what they really look like but they sure seem appealing to me!

Bringing the topic full circle, about my favorite modern painter is Glenn Barr, who used to work for you on Ren & Stimpy. I wish more modern cartoons looked like his stuff. Here's one of Betty:

These images bring back a lot of memories. The 1960's was a great decade to be a little squirt obsessed with animated cartoons.
As a kid I would study the line drawings in the unused Whitman coloring books--there was no John K blog to learn from 40 years ago.
