I really want to see that cartoon of Jimmy and Sody dating in the car. I think I saw an storyboard of somewhere in the internet.

Now that second image: is that a collective run-thru of various Jimmy models? Thru the ages?

I'd guess so. Impressive work, all over.

In 1988, there was an animation festival called Outrageous Animation, and the promo graphic for it looks like it came straight from nascent MM era spumco, but it is credited, or at least copyrighted to one Danny Antonucci. Who is this Antonucci, and why does this look like your stuff?
This is before "imitation spumco" because its really pre-spumco.
Just a trivial historical question. Thank you.

It's called Lupo the Butcher, made by my friend Danny Antonucci in his own style.

It's very funny but has nothing to do with Spumco style. It's all Danny.

Sometimes people lump anything cartoony all into the same style.

John, you do realise that you ruined Ren and Stimpy for alot of people with those adult episodes, right? (image number 3 in your post)
They were horrible besides the "Ren seeks help" episode. Which to my surprise is the best Ren and Stimpy episode ever. Hehe.

But i gues it's just me. I grew up with Ren and Stimpy on TV. You flushed the childhood memories through the toilet. hah.
If you used any other character in them it would had been just fine to me.

Still love your work to death, keep it up.

Well I might have went to far for some folks. They do real well in theatres though, so I guess you can't please everyone every time.

Sorry about that.

I'll try harder next time, ok?

Speaking of the ren and stimpy adult party cartoons, did you have to deal with the same executives that you did at Nickelodeon considering that spike tv and Nickelodeon are both owned by Viacom? If so did you pitch them the idea for the show or did them come crawling back to you?

Aagh, I want the Goddamn George Liquor Program so bad it hurts.

Sody is VERY refreshing! And so are her underdressed pals. I hope to see a lot more of them soon. ;)

Seems to me there are some definite stylistic similarities in the Bald heavy with the meat-cleaver and the MM-Kricfalusi style of the period. -"cartoony" seems a pretty general term itself (if we're talking of "lumping") for the discerning eye, maestro. Thanks for answering my idle query.

Toonimated is full of crap. I LOVED R&S TOS, but when APC I realized that John had been holding back.

If you don't like the APC eps, you might want to water down EVERYTHING before consumming it. Can't be too careful.

What exactly do you find "horrible" in those episodes? Don't you like boobies? ;)

Most people don't seem to get that the show's name is ADULT Party Cartoon, and not the Ren & Stimpy's Bible Hour. It's funny as hell, with top notch artwork and animation.

Sorry about that.

I just love how well you can cope with criticism.

So it's gotta be Ren & Stimpy's Bible Hour next time, right? ;)

Y'know, I'm starting that ball again, mebbie you don't run my last one. I'm just going to accept the fact that in the arena of John I have(I cry out to heaven) no eyes! I'm gone.

I enjoyed what aired of APC but the lost episodes, I find them generally very clunky and poorly timed. I also can't blame Toonimated for being overwelmed by the adult content, I wasn't though.

Roberto González said...

Since this has been brought up I didn't really mind Ren and Stimpy APC being more "adult" and Toonimated didn't seem to mind either, cause he did love "Ren Seeks Help" as I did.

Boobies are ok, I'd just prefer things to be a little more subtle overall. Like that girl in Altruists, she was already sexy but does she need to touch her boobies all the time? Do we need Ren saying "What's wrong with your tits?" or something along these lines?

Stimpy being kind of affeminate sometimes is funny, but in many of the APC episodes he acted like a girl all the time. That kinda kills the joke for me. Even though it is Adult Party cartoon I believe he could have kept a little more of his childish personality.

I believe there is a middle ground. The Spumco comic books I read are a little more "adult" than the original Ren and Stimpy show. They have some sexy girl gags, some gay jokes and some hard language but they aree not trying to be "offensive" all the time, like APC did, at least in my eyes.

The posters look great! Anybody throwing money at you yet?

Gee whiz, can't please everybody all of the time. I'm looking forward to the day "Life Stinks" is completed.

M. R Darbyshire said...

Well, John, I love everything here, and I sure love the Adult Party Cartoons.

Subtlety doesn't belong everywhere. The extreme gags in Spumco toons are well-controlled and intelligent.

Just saying.

do you know if Antonucci use script writers or cartoon writers?

Thomas said...

Raising the 'Tard...self defense.
George teaching Jimmy how to defend himself is a classic comic idea.
Hope to see it sometime soon.

So is that what your George Liqour cartoon is? just a pitch with no plans attached yet? for some reason I thought maybe you already had a deal with a network or website, or some type of outlet for it. I really cant wait to finally see the stuff your working on all done an animated.

As for ren and stimpy...

"What exactly do you find "horrible" in those episodes? Don't you like boobies? ;)"

No, its just Ren and Stimpy fans generally want episodes that fit with the rest. ie, don't have anything that wouldn't have aired on Nickelodeon. Well, within reason, I mean I know they can be uptight at times, but there are some things that obviously cross the line, and most of the new episodes did that.

"Sorry about that.

I'll try harder next time, ok?"

Do you think their will BE a next time? I would love it if done right. without being too adult or too dumbed down. is it just a matter of someone approaching you for new episodes, or are there any legal things to get through?

I wouldn't speak of ren and stimpy fans generally, because we sold a lot of those dvds and every time I show them, people laugh their butts off.

I find it a bit rude to come here and crab about a cartoon that didn't suit your particular exact taste, when it is completely obvious that a lot of very talented people worked their arses off to try to amuse you.

If not every person on the planet loved it, well that's the luck of the draw.

We can only try our best on the few chances we get. We were asked specifically to push the envelope and that's what we did to play the game.

It still has more jokes, more variety and better drawings than any other modern cartoon comedy and that's all I'll say about it until I post some of the stuff.

Then you can crab at the evidence in front of you.

I don't anyone is disputing the work involved John. Well, at least I don't.

JohnK said...

It's very high caliber work and introduced many new stars to the scene with their best work on film to date:
Katie Rice, Nick Cross, Helder Mendonca,Kristy Gordon, Jessica Borutski and tons more that all have their own fan bases now.

Why?

Because of APC and the work they did there, and the chances I took giving them their spots in the public eye.

A lot was achieved in that show. It just wasn't first, but each episode got better. It never got a chance, unlike other shows that were just left on TV for years till they eventually built an audience.

I dare any of these complainers to do something half so innovative or entertaining - especially under such difficult circumstances with very little money.

I'm gonna post some very clever stuff from the show soon for those who complain but have not actually watched each episode, or just had knee-jerk reactions because of a handful of funny gay scenes.

Rudy Tenebre said...

Huh, I havn't the nostalgic connection to Ren and Stimpy most have, and enjoyed the "APC"s and thought it the most beautiful work you an' yer crew done yet.

This reminds me, when I was 9 years old I went to see Heavy Metal in the theater (back in '81) just for the cartoon tits an' the like. Freaked me out, ruined my innocent cartoon world and set me back to nurturing my damaged psyche on old Deputy Dawg cartoons. In a way, I understand this sort of paradise lost your fans are experiencing. Of course shortly after this trauma I discovered Bakshi's urban period, and never turned back.

JohnK said...

I'm amazed any guy would complain about seeing beautiful naked cartoon girls, the same ones that accused Ren and Stimpy of being gay.

Kyle said...

I'm not disputing the amount of work/talent involved John. the character designs were awesome and very well drawn. and if it weren't for this I might not have ever found out about Kali (my personal fav of the artists that came out of this) And your right, its better than most of the stuff on tv in probably the past decade. But it just didn't feel like Ren and Stimpy. That's all I'm getting at.

And your right, maybe I shouldn't try to speak for everyone, really I wasn't trying to. Just for those of us who didn't like APC.

I never claimed I could do better, or something half, even quarter as good.

The naked women was the best part about the entire series.

I'd rather have it where we can directly communicate with the people responsible as to whether we like or hate their programs, rather than keep the status quo where we get a mountain full of crap programming on account of the creators going out of their way to IGNORE their own audience.

JohnK said...

This blog has more than 1.000 posts of direct communication with my audience and I don't ignore their tastes.

I get tired of the odd individual passing off his taste as everyone else's when I already have plenty of different opinions when actually screening the cartoons.

Should I go to your blog and tell you what's wrong with all your drawings? And I'd be considerably more analytic, distinct and useful about it.

You do a really good job of giving the girls really wacky expressions but still making them pleasing to the eye. A very difficult balance to achieve.

This comment would probably not be answered or even posted since I'm too late in the game, but I just read this and I can help to answer.

I don't know about other guys, but I'd generally like people coming to my blog and telling me what's wrong with my drawings as long as it's constructive criticism. And if the people who visit your blog is an expert then it's even better.

I hate when people just say "I don't like it" or "This is crap" but I find it equally boring when people just don't give their opinion or said it's ok without commenting something about it. If they explain their point of view, then it's interesting to know. Nobody likes criticism, even constructive criticism is a little annoying when you have worked a lot doing the thing, but ultimately I usually like to read people's opinion.
