Betty knows just how much Bimbo is turned on by cycles.

This is what I would consider
not conservative animation. Grim isn't holding anything back. He's just doing what he thinks is naturally funny. He's not checking his rule book first.

You'd have a million people saying no to this kind of thing today - or even in the 50s.

Not just because it's dirty - but because it's too cartoony. It "doesn't make sense".

This arm wave is funny as hell, you better say no to it, quick!

And of course the rubber butt slap is the topper of it all.

The Fleischers had their own sort of "limited animation " techniques. They would animate a lot of cycles or bits of animation and repeat them a couple times. This could essentially cut their budgets in half. This is different than say, HB's limited animation of the late 50s - where they were trying to hide the animation. The Fleischers made the cycles themselves funny and worth looking at more than once.''

By the 50s animation was still professional, but outside of some commercials, was pretty conservative. "We don't do that sort of thing anymore".

I love this early purity.

To me, this is the essential part of animation- moving things funny.

Now you have to fight like Hell to get anyone to allow you to do what simply comes naturally to the medium.

Look what this is doing for Bimbo!

Don't you wish your gal/dog? would do some erotic cycles for you?

Don't have a gal, but now I'll be building a shrine to Grim and Betty in my basment.
All that's missing is the pole.
If my girlfriend did stuff like that, I'd never cheat. Ever.

Bimbo's Initiation was a strange one all right. Strange and fun.
I dont know about Bimbo, but I'm getting a bit of a knob.
Looks to me like she's the bimbo.
I love strong women, but I would sure like to meet a floozy like Betty.
And the dog is the one named Bimbo... Strange.
That was funny stuff; a bit creepy, but funny.
HAW! I likes the way she slaps her ass!
I wonder what the hell she is saying!

That was an old technique by the time of this cartoon. Disney's Oswalds certainly engaged in the practice with a little too much gusto.
There's an assumption in that statement, Sven. And that is that a strong woman couldn't be a "floozy".
Besides, Betty's stood up for herself on more than one occasion. She's a tough cookie when need be.

I really like these Betty Boop posts. She used to be such a fun character but her last cartoons were so boring and not fun at all! I loved Mysterious Mose and all the cartoons where she was a dog.
Would you ever want to do a Betty Boop short in the same vein you did the Yogi cartoons in?
"If my girlfriend did stuff like that, I'd never cheat. Ever."
Dog. :P

but you would normally? What a stupid thing to announce to the world!
Betty is the cutest character ever! These early cartoons with her and Bimbo crack me up.
That is one crazy-ass disguise she's got on at the beginning.
What gets me most about this clip is the slapping sound you hear twice toward the end of the slapping animation. It's rough and startlingly convincing, although I'm still not entirely convinced it isn't just pops in the old audio track.
My girlfriend/wife does stuff like that and I love her dearly! heheehee
I love these cartoons!! They look much freer than the network crap they churn out now!
Awsome!! and to see it frame by frame is great! I'd love to hear the whole song!!! I love those old half arabic belly dancing songs they used to do in strip joints...
Hey John do animation schools exist any more?
There are none here in Australia (but plenty of fun computer animation schools).
Could you point me in the right direction?
I need healthy competition to keep me busy.
Maybe you could hold drawing competitions here.
I'm not sure if I prefer Betty as a dog or as a person, but I really like her early cartoons much more than the last ones, which are pretty boring.
I really like Minnie The Moocher, she's not a dog there, but her animation and poses are more fluid and interesting than they are in subsequent cartoons. The music is also great of course.
Really like Betty's expression in the first framegrab you posted, she's very cute there.
but you would normally? What a stupid thing to announce to the world! It would be stupid, Kali, if in fact the world, or indeed, the girls I will go on to date, were readers of this blog.
Dating a girl from the Blogiverse would be like dating a girl you met at a family reunion.

You could get away with this now but...it would have to have a rating. Some way for the studio to say that kids weren't meant to see it so they could avoid potential litigation. Hollywood is run by lawyers. People still tend to think of cartoons as kids stuff though even after decades of Simpsons and Family Guy. I think it is slowly changing though. One must be vigilant and persistent.
Hmm a strong floozy. That would be an amazing woman, sure would like to meet her.
I just remember Betty as being pushed around and getting herself in trouble. I don't have many Betty Boop cartoons in my collection. Im going to go watch them right now.
"Dating a girl from the Blogiverse would be like dating a girl you met at a family reunion. "
I take personal offense to this!
I would say that from a stylistic standpoint, Bimbo's wiggling ears at the beginning of Betty's dance is visually distracting.
I admire the craft of the animation, but I know that as a kid, I would have fallen asleep watching this.
The early cartoons from Fleisher are a fascinating study, but outside of Popeye (pure genius) I'm a little shocked that children enjoyed animation from this era at all.
But, my contemporaries fondly remember Scooby-Doo being a great show... Studio execs are right, people are stupid. ^_-
Kali, I already told you, I can't date you. My wives would kill me.
Betty Boop. the big bumper! i wish my gf have an ass like her. LOL
Meh, I'll take funny/goofy without the eroticism, something I find anything but funny. =\
