Milt Gross draws my favorite backgrounds. They make no logical sense and don't follow perspective, but somehow they aren't wonky.
I have no idea how he does this, but I wish I could do it.

I'm going to work on Lesson 2 about squash and stretch.
I wonder whether Milt Gross pencilled first or drew straight into pen? For that matter, I'm curious to know what kind of pen he used to get such freestyle lines.
I'm wondering the same thing.
How DOES he do it?
Hey, I recognize this pooch from Big House Blues.
An homage?
:)
Gross is a Master in composition!
By the way, I did some layouts from your sketches, If you have time, take a look!

Thanks!
Love the last panel! He gets the feeling just right without, as you say, making it wonky.
Sorry to be off topic, but on another note, i'm finding the Kaspar exercise pretty tricky...can anyone offer me any insight?
kaspar studies
Thanks a lot,
Paul.
Isn't it strange that corner of the drawer closest to us is the smallest, and the farther away edges are wider? It looks pretty solid anyways.
Is this approach to Kaspar more like it?
thanks!
really funny an awesome story
Milt Gross must be a really funny man
love his drawings, so full of life
OT: John, I've seen you write about Kirby style before. I thought you may enjoy these Kirby-esque comic covers for Tarontino's "Inglorious Basterds". I'd be curious to see how well you think the artist mimicked King Kirby's style.

I'm going to guess that it's because the props are based on good solid construction but the composition isn't restricted to match any real perceptive.
Thanks for the link.
I'd speculate that he worked in an improvisational way.
kind of reminds me of the Marx Bros., in its looseness.
I think the looseness, relates to its subversiveness, like the Marx Bros.
Great props and backgrounds, They're jut as animated as everything else.
Hey John, when was the last time you talked to Jack Black? You should try to talk to him about doing more animation since he's mega rich and all

Really? are you sure? I have hard time to read what is going on.
Maybe Gross's backgrounds and props were a bunch of lucky accidents!
