John, the Segar drawing you posted is some sort of print that was available from King Features back in the thirties. I have one. The color seems to be hand watercolored. I can't tell if the signature was added or if Segar just signed the original. I believe the original drawing was the same size as the print, which makes this a larger than usual Segar comic strip. If you look close, you can see where his pen runs out of ink in the middle of the longer strokes. Those dip pens didn't have much reservoir. My theory is that Popeye has those little bumps on his knees and elbows so Segar could break the line to dip his pen.Segar must have been really inspired when Popeye fought Bluto the one and only time in the comic strip. The pen lines are flying all over and they literally beat the clothes off one another. This happened in 1932. Check it out.
Great study of the Popeye toy! He was always one of my favorite cartoon characters.
you ever wonder how segar came up with the look and design of that character? i mean thats pure americana, an aged one eyed sailor/ruffian,could only work in america as a pop icon.often imitated(powrhouse pepper ) never duplicated. i know popeye is supposedly based on a real person..but wow! talk about inspiration!
Great! Something to draw when I get home tonight!
When are we gonna set up and shoot the variations on a theme/Popeye gallery?? We gotta do that, just as a learning experience...
Hey John, I remember back when you were doing some bosko and the one frog lessons. Could you do a popeye lesson like those?
To make that toy they must of gone back in time and gotten Michelangelo to come to the future to sculpt it or they just added forearms onto the Statue of David. Either way, beautiful Popeye toy.
I'm keen to see the 2d-3d and back, the same as seeing your characters sculpted.Having just seen this today http://screencrave.com/2009-11-02/how-to-train-your-dragon-trailer/ I couldn't help but be annoyed at current 3d films. The still they've taken as promotional material baffles me.
