I like these funny off-model toys. I wonder how many folks could draw this and retain not just the proportions and construction, but the
feel - the surface and physics of the thing.

Cartoonists and paticularly animators have a tendency to make everything out of the same material. Their lines describe either "cartoon-skin" like 40s cartoons, or "itchy lumpiness" like 70s cartoons, or a handful of other line qualities.

It might be fun to caricature the feel of this yogi ballon and see if you can capture it. The swollenness, the tight wrinkles at the seams, the squeezyness etc. I think I will give it a shot later, myself.

As an example, here is my caricature of puppets:

BTW:
Lsaac and I are experimening with putting my cartoon lessons on a separate blog:
http://johnkcurriculum.blogspot.com/There are still some bugs in the order of the lessons, but go check it out.
and don't forget to peek in at the new storyboard blog:

calling Rod Scribner, calling Rod Scribner to do this!
I'll be checking out those lession. It would seem that there is material on the curriculum blog that weren't posted here?
If I lived in your area, I would check out your lectures. Unfortunately I'm too far away.
Good Morning!

I think the puffy yogi makers were confused about where to stick his eyebrows. haha
John! That new blog with lessons is unbelievable! Thankyou SO much man!
It's so generous dude!
I is so easy to look around on that blog... I will use that alot from now on, and hopefully I'll catch your attention, and be a part of your work some day!:)
Cheers man!
BTW Do you know how I can come in contact with David Feiss?
AHH! Thanks a million for your JohnKCurriculum! All your lessons and analysis are candy for me (nutritious candy), but going through all the tags on the side of of the page goes to show how enormous this blog is and it can be very daunting. It's great that this new blog boils it down to the lessons.
I'm going to donate sometime in Jan. This blog is really really helpful to me.
thanx so much for putting all of your lessons together on a separate site. i reference them constantly & this makes it all the more convenient :)
Caricature of puppets?!
Why don't you use the real thing?

I also agree the new curriculum blog is great to get around. Wil you be adding the 1930's animating to beat lessons to it also?
Here's my attempt. Thanks John for the challenge.

here's my first attempt

The wrinkles are more like indentations than like wrinkles on clothing. I don't know, but it's hard to explain in words. Plus, to make this thing look like a balloon, you'd have to make it really, really shiny.
To Paul B! Wow, that's pretty good. Looks balloony to me.
I'll take any challenge.
George Liquor in balloon-style looks quite funny! "Balloon-style cartoons", hmm, not a bad idea...
This "JohnKCurriculum" is looking pretty good! I've started your lessons a short time ago, and this surely helps a lot. (Man, how I wish I lived in your area, these private lessons would be perfect... I mean, I don't know where you live, but I'm pretty sure it's quite far from my home here in Brazil...)
Something you might find funny (or might get mad at me), in my blog:

I just found this blog today at home sick. There is so much awesome information I am going to have to spend a few weeks doodling and reading to catch up.
Here is my quick doodle of Puffy Yogi
I tried again:

Whoever thought balloons would be this tough? haha
