John K -- This is great! I can tell it's hard to draw, but it totally comes across. You need to get this out to all the ultimate mixed martial arts fans or whatever they are, 'cuz they'd love it.
Did you ever explain the gray bill?
These recent stories of yours, along with a few similarly formatted web comics I've seen, got me thinking: We ought to coin a term for web comics where you have to keep scrolling down and down and down. I'm suggesting "scrolly comics."
Scrolly comics have their advantages and disadvantages. You lose the beauty of artful panel arrangements. But there's something fun about just continuing to scroll down and down, as you reveal more and more of the story. They're also handy for posting on blogs, which are already set up for continually scrolling down.
As an experiment, I decided to take a 4-page, traditionally-formatted comic I drew recently and turn it into a scrolly comic. Here it is in scrolly form:
Wow. Pretty impressive. Its hard enough making sense of the tangled limbs in real life but it looks like you have it down pretty tight. You went for probably the hardest to draw move out there too.. Did you play with a rear naked choke or a straight arm bar?
Man, I am endlessly impressed by the amount of research you're clearly doing for this fight - I don't know anything about low-down dirty fighting, but you're obviously putting a lot of thought into this.
Bonus points to DB for making Slab really psychologically uncomfortable.
Haha! Wow, things is getting pretty hot :p These drawings are so awesome, I'm going to do some studies of them. P.s: I really love the fact you have your stories and lessons collected on separate blogs too.
It's looking amazing John, not even in action comics I have ever seen this kind of fighting - using Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques, submission, chokeholds, etc. I just think that maybe some people won't understand the action, I mean, sometimes you gotta know a little about grappling and submission - ground fighting in general - to see what's happening. If Bastard executes something like a flying armbar on Slab, I don't think most people will get it...
I love the colour and style, and I thought you would too, but I'm on the fence about the composition. I see lots of grouping, variety, contrast and dynamic lines -all very good- but the negative and positive spaces still feel a tad too evened-out to me.
Does it read well enough in your opinion? Or is all the fun in simply letting the directional lines of the objects pull you around and around, like some of the try-to-find-every-gag Mad Magazine covers? Or is there a solid big picture that I'm not seeing?
Do you think the front and back covers work better as individual compositions, even though it's one painting? I can tell what's important, so it's not confusing, but somehow I think it could still be better. Please share you insights. Thanks! Zoran
Also - I'm reminded of the first Kricfalusi UFC Night I had the pleasure of attending.
Jim walked in and said "What are we watching?" and someone replied "Fighting!" Jim took a quick peek at the two sweaty, writhing guys on the TV screen and said something like, "I don't know - where I come from we don't lay down to fight." And left the room.
wow bet it was hard to draw i tryed drawing some ju jitsu moves and its so hard and impossible to find referance, feel sorry for slab that move hurts ! i learnt ( well tryed) that choke when i was doing jj and we had franklyn jessop come and give a lesson at the dojo :)

It's gettin' dark out, folks! reminds me of a wrestling move called the armpit-sniffer... not much fun, and hurt like hell.
Ha ha ha hilarious! Looks like Donald is busting out with some of that ghetto kama sutra :)
Nothing like getting choked out with your face buried in filthy duck wang.
"Maybe he likes you!" That's hilarious! DB gets arrested for indecent activities!

Ptooey
I also have a link there to the comic in its traditional, non-scrolly format. Everyone is welcome to visit and compare the 2 versions. :)

This is probably why all the old cartoon fights used to happen inside a cloud of dust.
OK I'll bite, what does BJJ stand for?
LOL, cloaca
It definatly looks hard to draw.

Also, Chris Garrison: most webcomics people would probably class this as a subset of what Scott McCloud calls the 'Infinite Canvas'.
That last panel could be misconstrued as beastiality. =)

Amazing drawings! Jeez, what a position...
Me: "Nobody likes THAT."
John & Mike (simultaneously): "EDDIE DOES!!!"
Holy shit, Jiu-Jitsu Duck. Awesome.
"Cartoons for Vale Tudo fighters", interesting...

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu...is more difficult.
Send Slab the Bill!
bjj is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Hey John, what are your thoughts on this?

BJJ = Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a martial art commonly used in Ultimate Fighting and various fighting circles.
You've got your work cut out for you, John.
I'm anxious to see you flesh out this boy on duck action.
Is that worm Slab's 'cut man'?

Wow, a triangle, do you practice brazilian jiu jitsu?
I do.
Hahaha These drawings are awesome.
You are working like a mad man. Beautiful stuff John. Thanks for the eye candy.
Well, you've got to admit, it would freak out the bully a lot more than a simple beating.

It would have the maximum psycho effect on the bully if DB was sportin' a tent pole.
I am a Tae Kwon-Do student, and actually the policy of movements here are very alike to our sparring practices when on the ground.
