I can relate, I always retreat to Mayberry when real life gets too rough.

The Andy Griffith show is one show I could never get into. I don't know why but it just never appealed to me. I liked other older shows such as Leave it to Beaver, Dennis the Menace, The Honeymooners and others but not this one!

Im not sure where a good place to post this would be but I figured this most recent post should work.

I have been reading your posts for well over a year, and have taken a lot out of what you have offered. I have even bought the Preston Blair book and reference it whenever I have time.

With that said I'm wondering what your opinion on this article about Preston Blair's book is.

Posted by Patrick Smith on his blog. If you have the time.

Thanks

Hey, here's a chance to take Ren to a new level of evil. He could remind Stimpy that life in Mayberry is only ideal because it's only filled with white people! Heh heh heh

My opinion is that it's the best book on animation drawing basics there is.

By far.

He doesn't explain everything there is to know about animation, but he explains the most important parts. once you know the basics, it's easier to branch out and do other things.

I help explain his explanations in more detail in my posts for those who don't want to read his explanations.

Most people today can't even draw a sphere or a pear, let alone a whole character solidly constructed so his book is a great place to start.

I could see this as a prequel to Ren Seeks Help. Ren is turning Stimpy's world upside down.

Stimpy's so convinced that the world wants all his sorrows. He's got to be one of the sappiest characters, ever, and not just drowsily dreary like Droopy Dog.

I wonder what're John K.'s major "models" for Stimpson J. Cat?

I remember reading once somewhere that John K.'s model for Ren Hoek was some fellow animator or director -- somebody who would storm into production company meetings and pitch his cartoon with screaming rants and lifting the desk over his head and so on. I'd like to think that it's true, that there's some real life "character" like that, but I can't find any more recollections (or rumors?) of any such person (or even any such statements by John K.)

My favorite character, or the character I can relate to the most, is George Liquor. He exemplifies the "power male" of a bygone era of glorious, guilt-free excesses.

George Liquor would actually thrive on most of the things you see on "This is Why You're Fat" without getting fat (might be, because of his Charles Atlas dynamic tensioning). He's THE prime candidate for "Most Likely to Die of a Heart Attack In Arizona Trying to Get the Family Back Into the Station Wagon For the Rest of the Trip Across the Great United States of America to Visit the New Hoover Dam Bypass During a Rant Ending With the Words Dam ByPASSSSSSSSUGH and For Everybody Standing Around to Assume He Must Have Been Talking About His Heart Surgery". The only guy! Everybody else in the world would fall in a frail and sickly second place, in that contest.

I can just hear the spit splat against Ren's eyes.

Uh oh. I know what's coming next. See also Eugene Levy's portrayal of Floyd on SCTV.

Lest we forget:

Bell on door clangs, come on in
Floyd observes my hairy chin
Sit down chair don't be afraid
Steamed hot towel on my face

I was Shaved
I was Shaved
I was Shaved

Barney ties me to the chair
I can't see I'm really scared
Floyd breathes hard I hear a zip
Pee pee pressed against my lips

I was Shamed
I was Shamed
I was Shamed

I sense others in the room
Opey, Aunt Bee, I presume
They take turns and cut me up
I died smothered in Andy's butt.

I was Shaved
I was Shaved
I was Shaved

Stimpson looks like his good ol' 1990s self here. Really cute drawing of him.
