I think Ketcham and his crew have a perfect balance of skill, style, cartooniness and observation.

I have a Dennis comic that has some wonderful drawings of cows, cars, houses

and of course, milfs.

I want to do a post on one of these things they excel at.
You decide which I should do first.
This is my attempt at a bit of market research.
YOU CAN LEARN A LOT FROM HANK KETCHAM

Do the milfs first John! I wanna learn how to draw cute girls like these ghost artists can, even though I've been practicing for a while now.
Hank Ketchman would never draw a bad line.
Cows! Or cows next to girls? Girls milking cows.
It's worth noting how beautiful the lettering is.
I say milfs. But girls milking cows is tempting. The style reminded me of french belgium comic book artist Jean Roba and and somewhat like Franquin.
I find it odd that every girl I stumble upon in modern cartoons have all a cheerleader/geeky nerd complex.
Well I can't show you something you just make up.
I can only show what I have.
I say houses.
Some of my favorite comics when I was about eight years old were back issues of the Dennis the Menace comics that dealt with travel. Stuff like Dennis in Yellowstone. Dennis in California. Etc. They really made me want to visit the National Parks. The folk who wrote and illustrated those comics were extremely talented. Dennis was a little asshole, but always hilarious.
I'm with Tony- houses.
Ketchman delivers.
MILFS!!!!!
Alice Mitchell has been in my "spank bank" for as long as I've known how to make a depost.
MILFS!!! MILFS!!! MILFS!!!
Cows milking houses.
Cars milking milfs.
milfs milking milfs
In the first panel; there's so much readable detail. Considering its a panel for a daily comic strip. its pretty amazing.
I like the delivery truck in the next post. Its a total invention, but consistent with the rest of the strip. Its invented in relation to the characters, and perfectly suits them.
Jaime Hernandez (Love and Rockets) talks about his love for one of the Ketcham ghosts (with great examples and commentary) in Todd Hignite's In the Studio book.
Really weird point of view from a print cartoonist as opposed to an animation cartoonist: Ketcham drew panel boxes like nobody else. They were organic and alive.
Organic line quality is really important in print, possibly more so than any other medium. He varied his outlines and in his interior lines, he used different fonts for speech balloons intelligently and smoothly. Notice Dennis' font is different from his mothers... the font is serif but readable.
Save the milfs for last. Build some suspense!
All moms are MILFs in Ketcham's world. No wonder Dennis is such a screwed-up, evil little bastard! I wonder what else he put in that tea?
If you're only doing one, milfs. But if you're going to do all of them, I agree that you should save them for last.
That Fitzgerald Dennis strip is mind boggling.
-if you're still taking votes, i vote houses.
