Trying To Give Back

More stiff caricaturesThese hotties would surely make Disney fans swoon in cartoon form.

That Taylor girl really does have an interesting head, but I haven't quite nabbed it yet. It might be too unique for animation, though.
Since anmated fairytales are in dire need of new designs for the lead romantic characters I thought I'd work on some. I am basing them on live action celebrities with proven hip appeal, because it would be immature to try to make something up out of nothing.

I love these posts. These are the teen Disney heroes people need!

I tried my hand at layout for the first time today after reading your email from yesterday, and I wasn't pleased with the results. The Kaspar drawing came out messy and formless and sloppy. I have a few questions in my reply if you haven't read it yet.

These "stiff" caricatures look far better and livelier than the real people themselves. Combine Robert Pattinson's "hip" personality with Gene Kelly's classic charisma, and I think you'd have a multi-billion dollar hit movie. Make Taylor his girlfriend, with a few homages to the characters on the Beverly Hillbillies, and that Beiber kid the pesky Dennis the Menace next door who always ruins their dating plans, and you have the perfect movie for the young teenage girls.

Who thinks those celebrities are hip? Real people are much more interesting.

Hey John, do you just freehand this stuff but try and pay close attention to the specific details, or do you try and come up with a shape (not a circle or an oval) that suggests the shape of their head and then try to draw through accordingly?

I'd like to try my hand at this is all.

No familiarity with Disney teen stuff here, but that girl in the second panel has certain qualities I could fall for:
A simple haircut, flirty eyes, a long neck and five fingers on the right hand.

Looking at the male heros in modern teen romances:
Has to be clumsy, caring, obsessive and otherworldly.
Good looks not necessary.
Stimpy might be fine.

I'm starting to see what you mean by "stiff." Thanks.

This is off-topic, but are there any indications the Golden Collection will resume. I went on Wikipedia and the Superstar collection will only use post-1948 cartoons.

Why do they do these things?

Also, thank you for having all this information. I did some writing for a play and would truly love it if you looked it over or something later on.

Of course I understand that you are a busy man.

P.S. I saw Rabbit Seasoning just now.

It is the same joke over and over.

Actually that vampire guy from Twilight should be stiff just like all the other Twilight characters.

Anyway, what's with all the emo themes lately? Is mainstream animation making you that depressed?

for me, this are awesome!

I don't mean to imply I think lowly of Chuck Jones. I just mean compared to the other Looney Tunes cartoons previously, it falls flat.

Great caricatures.

Didn't see that you were criticizing caricature posts. I am learning how to see good animation and it is hard to learn.

I am not sure if you said that for real, but that would actually be a great experiment if you do that, I mean, designing your Disney prince and princess so you can proof them that they could do different characters. That would be really interesting to see.

I don't think these celebrities have any appeal, and I believe their fans are the immature ones. Not sure if somebody should base their characters on them, but if it's just a way to draw real, specific head shapes I guess they serve the purpose.

At least some of them are good looking. The girl in the Twilight series is pretty but she seems so fragile and shy that I don't find her especially charismatic as a movie star.

Another great batch. You've made these otherwise unbearable people actually likeable.

hey! nice observation on the first dude!

the middle of the upper lip doesn't conect with the middle in the lower lip. If we put it on 2D words, the lower lip center is more to the right, that gives a great sense of depth.

I love these!

They are absolutely hilarious!!

Any chance of seeing Zac Efron? and perhaps Lady Gaga?

Robert Pattinson is awesome. He knows Edward is a big jerk and that Stephenie Meyer is a dreadful Mary Sue writer. He has no emotional investment in these movies; he phones it in as Edward, collects his huge paycheck, and goes home. He's like Sir Alec Guinness. It's wonderful.

Considering I recognized and correctly guessed Taylor before reading the caption I'd say you captured her quite well. The rest didn't come to me as easy.

hey john, been loving these studies you've been posting.
it's nice to see that you don't just assume being done after all, and mostly that you support manlyness.
by the way. bothering you once more. it could be any of your characters! i love your cartoon girls.
(hope you don't hate me yet)
cheers!

Off-topic: I found this cool Ub Iwerks cartoon while looking at some animation blogs. It's from 1939, but it's still really funny, especially Mel Blanc's voice performance. Maybe you could add this to the post you did the other day. There's some great animation in this one.

How can Disney sell imagination when they don't use it?

@AdamLore - Lady GaGa IS a cartoon! Here's Kali's take on her.

Oh em gee, Miley Cyrus. MILEY CYRUS. Bwahahaha, those moonface pictures of her are ridiculous (in the best possible way). Though I admit it took me forever to recognize her.

Zoran,

haha, thanks Zoran, those are great. Kali is the best.

I'd love to see John more kind of poke fun of her, though.. Kali's is almost kind of flattering. :--)

@AdamLore - A crazy caricature would be great, but why rip on the only remaining cool-looking person in the world?
