John- Have you ever considered making a mobile app? I'm not in your cartooning college, but your cheat sheets and Preston Blair scans are great resources, and it would be swell to have a portable iPod app so we could practice wherever we have our phone and our sketchbooks. Printouts, not so much.

These are killer. The Brad Pitt is one of the best I've ever seen...

Hi Emily

my cartooning teacher at Sheridan college told me I'd never make it in animation and I should stick to caricatures. I don't think they are exaggerated enough though, but thanks!

Karley Jo: What's a mobile app?

Yeah, that first Brad Pitt kills me, John. It's Great! I used to be a caricature junky at work, all I wanted to do was find a new subject and learn their face theories. It was getting me into trouble in more ways than one.

That makes me even more cautious of even attending an animation college when I graduate from high school in two years. Your teacher sounds terrible from that description if he/she is trying to discourage you that way. How could I avoid ending up in that scenario?

I think these are very exaggerated enough. I love how well polished the first Angelina drawing is and how the subsequent pages are looser, but still fun to look at.

I like how you carefully preserved the pussy in Angelina's upper lip in each one of those caricatures of her, even the wildest.

a mobile app is an iphone app. some artists like to use it to sell their sketchbooks for cheap. http://artistsketchbooks.com/

the preston blair cheat sheets sounds like a cool idea

hey john, say you wanted to ink a pencilled drawing with an inky-pen. How many different pen shapes do you think would be best? I usually use 2 pens and it kinda ruins my drawings. poop. What would you do?

I love your caricature posts by the way, your lines are class and they really look nice and fleshy, your good, thats for sure.

Aw, your Angelina's are just getting better and better! They're amazing. Not just the lips, you've got her crazy wild eyes right on!
And the Jennifer at the bottom is really great too. I never even considered that she was caricature material until now.
This is great stuff, so inspiring!

You should do one of those old-style cartoons where fish or birds or whatever are having some sort of concert or party, but they all look like caricatures of celebrities (think Danny Kay, Edward G. Robinson, Frank Sinatra- you know the cartoons I'm talking about) but instead with modern celebrities.

It would be funny and you could use all of your practice!

A mobile app is a program on cellphones that a user can interact with there are millions of them designed for telling the weather to stupid soundboards. I for one thing an app would be awesome!

Love the Perris Hilton one. Seems really well observed.

John, I think your level of exaggeration is right on!! Hilarious but recognizable. And I cracked up today when I went to the supermarket and saw the cover of Star magazine...
