I would complain about the horrible hair styles and cloths and eyeliner. My older brother owned a comic shop and just howled with laughter, hearing me unknowingly blast the King of comics.
I learned to appreciate Kirby with age though and can't get enough now. Thanks for putting up some great faces, John.
My favorite Kirby work is The Demon, which is full of fantastic Kirby faces. Issue #10 in particular is absolutely glorious.
Re: Gary Wintle
I had a similar experience. While I grew up reading my dad's old Kirby comics, I went through a phase as a young teen where I became too cool for Kirby. I remember preferring Mike Deodato's Thor - who looked like Fabio with hair extensions - to Kirby's.

Some of them have glassy look to them.
Man, I use to HATE Kirby as a kid.

"Nothing, Jay! It's just that you've never seen the face of a person 300 years old!"
That made my day. She's my favourite. The one below is great too.
Love those buggy eyes and wrinkles.
I love how manly all these Kirby faces are. Hell, even the women have a bit of masculinity to them. Great stuff, as usual.
Always thought the way Kirby drew teeth was very appealing.
