These are all from Hans Bacher's site: Great layouts killer cartooning and draftsmanship Great color Nasty colorI remember this character from when I was a kid living in Germany. Fun cartooning in odd styles Cal Arts origins. From Sullivant to Ken AndersonMilt Kahl LOTS MORE GREAT ART HERE
Seeing Blix in there made me think that you should look into the Simplicissimus Album. Or directly look into Karl Arnold and Bruno Paul who both drew for that publication.
Wow! I'm definitely am going to visit that website often. Loads of great artwork there. It's all overwhelming in a good way.
"I remember this character from when I was a kid living in Germany."
I sure hope you have some funny stories about that time in your life. You've never brought that up on your blog before. Did they show funny cartoons all the time in Germany?
Man, I love when you do that thing when you're showing us some great art and then BAM, you show a somewhat recent Disney still and there goes my childhood...
I've always had a crazy dream of becoming a great animator, and starting working on Disney so I could help to bring back some of the old glory, but as I grow older and as I understand better how their system works, I think it would be extremely hard to do.
I'm not as critical on the colour in that "Beauty and the Beast: scene as I am on the layout itself. I'm actually shocked at how it goes against many of the general rules of good composition: The near perfect symmetry on either side of the vertical centre, the chandelier lining up with the edges of the drapes, the table top lining up with the windowsill, etc. I don't mind the low horizon line for dramatic effect, but the whole scene could have been stronger if viewed from a slightly different angle towards the left or the right to avoid the tangents and monotonous symmetry.
So these Ken Anderson images are from the story of Renard the Fox. An old fable from the middle ages. I did some reading into the story and it turns out that the name Renard means "absolutely hard, a hardened evil-doer whom there is no turning from his way." The description for Renard matches the description for Ren! John was this an inspiration for the character? or just a coincidence?
The animal drawings toward the bottom remind me a lot of the Heinrich Kley's art. I'm not sure whether or not to assume you've heard of him, but just in case you haven't his work is awesome:
Hans Bacher is a major talent in his own right. He used to do amazingly detailed full-color thumbnails for previz. Really inventive color schemes & good tonal values, too.
Whoa Mecki the Hedgehog! Did not expect to see that here. My german family have got these great figurines of him. Must go learn more on Hans's blog! Which is an absolutely wonderful source of animation stuff of all kinds. Wow.

Yeah the Animation Treasures blog is great for inspiration & discovery, one of the ones I check daily. His book is worth a look too

Lot's of great German caricatures in there.

but why were you living in germany as a kid? never heard of that...
That is some nice, tasty colors there (except for that still of Beauty and the Beast, that ones crap). Not to mention great cartooning as well.

Yes he does. It's as if in his brain he's got a specific pattern for subtelty and creativity.
Thanks for the share!
John, do you like Winsor McCay?
There's something about his work that annoys me, but I don't know what.
I love the Ken Anderson stuff.
Hey John, art by Ken Anderson is really hard to get a hold if. If you find any more I'd be grateful if you put some of it up.
His sketches are brilliant.
Cool stuff! Especially the color backgrounds.
