A Rare Treat

Bill Wray sent me this nice scan of one of the first Tweety models drawn by Tom McKimson for Bob Clampett.

I hadn't realized that McKimson had such a hand in Tweety's look. I really like the very earliest Tweety. There was something frighteningly cruel lurking in that little bastard. That's probably why I liked those early toons of him when I was a little boy.

Cool! That's how Tweety looked in Gruesome Twosome!

Nice find on Bill's part, this is definitely a treat!

this is my favorite tweety. long before the days when his face squished into one small area and his cheeks stopped flapping.

thank you for posting this i really love them. I think he was probably better when he was pink he seemed more funny and a little more sinister.

good to see the original artisits notes too, because somebody must not have been reading them when they designed this version :p

I've seen a model sheet like that before, but I've never seen it in colour. That is a great fine. Thank you, Mr. Wray.

Gah!! Pure gold! Thank you Bill & John.

Did Tom do the colouring on this? I'm surprised it would be coloured without the colours being indicated in notations.

"No Teeth!" ... and no eyelashes!!!

They have this model sheet in the book "That's all Folks!: The Art of WB Animation", but its not in color, its more cleaned up, and a few of the notes are moved to different parts of the sheet. It's labeled as a model sheet for "A Gruesome Twosome".

Its nice to see it in color with all the pencil work showing.

Nice to see the origin of Tweety.

Perhaps calling him a "rare Tweet" works also, as Clampett's Tweety was far edgier and exaggerated than the later, milder version.

It's so cute! Back when cartoons used to be cute and funny.

I guess Friz gave him eyelashes?

Just saw the Gruesome Twosome for the first time the other day and I have to say it's the cartooniest cartoon I've probably ever seen (with the exception of some Fleischer cartoons maybe). There's so much to love in it, can't believe I'd neglected to see it!! It's a shame Clampett left WB in his prime...

I guess Friz gave him eyelashes?

To quote Friz Freleng himself, "I gave Tweety blue eyes so that he'd appeal to women."

Haha! I love the big scratchy 'TWEETY' scrawled in red. The big feet and the naked butt don't hurt either.

I must adore the original Tweety in Clampett hands. "A Tale of Two Kitties" is certainly the one i remember the most outside of the Freleng shorts which became monotonous except "Birds Anonymous", "Putty Tat Trouble", "Satan's Waitin'", "Hyde and Go Tweet" and "Trick or Tweet" for name a few.

Why did Friz take away all the appeal that Clampett had going for this. Its not like Tweety Pie had superior animation or designs despite winning an academy award nonetheless.
