I rarely watch Adult Swim because most of the shows are so bad (aside from Superjail). Is there going to be any other place to watch this, or, do you know what time your segment is so I can DVR it?
In Harmony, when you ink and draw, is there a "fidelity" setting to the brush and pencil tools like in illustrator? What kind of setting do you use in illustrator and harmony, if you don't mind me asking. Thanks :). The tip would be most appreciated.
That last one, where we can see the bg through his mouth, is funny. I want to see something (a bat or a bird maybe?) fly through it. Those amorphously placed ears have potential for hilariousness, too. I'm curious to see how that gets animated. Is the moon making that angry face in the third one because he farted with his butt-ear?
Very cool looking scenes here. Looking forward to seeing how it all comes together.
Personally, I think it's a crime that Adult Swim/Cartoon Network doesn't just let you write your own ticket, but I don't pretend to know what the specific deals discussed are. I hope they remain supportive, at least.
For no great reason, I took the statement about "you couldn't get these lines in Flash" as a small challenge. Not that I'm a big Flash defender or wouldn't like to have Harmony in my toolbox, but I wanted to see for myself how well I could mimic a frame from the clip (with a simplified BG, though). It's not a perfect match, but it doesn't instantly look too "Flashy" at least.
That's good to hear. I wasn't sure what you'd think of it, since there's still some rough spots.
I used a screen shot from the quicktime for reference. It was a bit soft so I couldn't get as precise as I'd like, so I had to go with instinct for the smaller details. It also took a while to settle on which still to use. There are so many good expressions in that one quick scene that I had a hard time choosing! I like how his hand goes from 5 to 6 fingers along the way.
I did plenty of fiddling with the edges of each brushstroke. It takes too long to get lines I'm happy with. I can see why you don't like Flash's brush. I'd really like to try Harmony's for myself, I'd probably save half the time I spend fixing Flash's. I can get a good range with the pressure sensitive tablet, but Flash frequently blubberizes them. It's all I've got for now, though.
I obviously simplified the background, since the test was more about the character's lines. I couldn't get the darker painted area done with Flash alone, of course, and wasn't trying to go that far.
All these new images look great. The use of colors in the lines is inspiring. I'm anxious to see how they all fit together.
haha I love this! Can't wait to check it out. I like how the boy's ears are all over the place. I especially like the one ear on top of his hat in the first picture.
Hi John, I am having some issues with line of action in my characters. I was wondering if you might be so kind as to show line of action in some of your artwork. For instance your new stuff? I'm sure a well skilled artiste can see it and understand it, but as I am a late bloomer and a bit thick I cannot. Like, where is the line of action in the walking Kirk head?
HA HA LOL Fair point! So are you saying that not evey character needs a line of action? Cos' on another post you show Tom's head with a line of action in the comic cover where Jerry is smacking him in the mouth.
Gordeaux- Line of action relates to the dynamics of a drawing, and applies to still drawings as well as animation. It's about posing the character in a way that gives the viewer a clear idea what's happening in the scene or image. As opposed to characters that just stand bolt-straight and have no "life" to them.
The line is like a "spine" for the whole form. The body follows that line, and the smaller details should react to that and not break the dynamic it sets up.
There's plenty of info on it right here. Scroll through the "labels" on the right edge of the main page and click on "line of action".
Thanx J C It's a little clearer but as I mentioned before, I am a little thick! This is the best blog ever! What a community that offers all this advice and support to other artists. Plus it's entertaining! John, write that book!
No problem. I figure John must be pretty busy, so if I can help answer a question or two, why not? As long as I'm not getting it wrong myself..
Planning a line of action also works better when designing with a purpose, as opposed to loose sketching or doodling. It still helps then too, but it's best used as a way to set up specific actions and poses that relate to a story beat.
This style makes me have a flashback to being at the drive-in with my parents in the 70's and the intermingling smell of popcorn and those green, spiral things that were supposed to repel mosquitoes...memories.

Loving the backgrounds and coloured line work on this! Can't wait to see it in it's final form.
wow. just wow.

Hey Sir, awesome work, such a treat to behold!

hi John!
looks nice!

Yes there is
I set it to where it doesn't change my drawings much
as low as possible

new comic
I had to end it really abruptly because I ran out of time
the omnipotent telegraph
I love the walking man head.

Well that's pretty good.
How did you do it?
When this bump is done, I want to get an HD copy and look at every. Single. Frame.
Are you animating this by yourself?
Maybe half of it. Posing all of it.
The bare-assed 'furry' on all-fours is going to give me nightmares. Remember that scene in "The Shining?"
looks beautiful!
I freaking love those backgrounds and the colors.
Thanks for the reply to my question. I'd love to dig into harmony, it looks awesome.
Can't wait for the bumper, but wish you'd get your own Adult Swim show! That block was MADE for your cartoons, what are they waiting for??
you should update your kirk douglas character to sag and droop.

Hey John, sorry I'm resorting to posting on your blog about this but I don't have any other means of contacting you.
I just wanted to share with you this comic I recently made for my Grade 11 Biology Class about science-y shit.

What do you think?
Amazing!!! This encourages me to watch Adult Swim! Or at least wait for that short cartoon.
The face of the rabbit is unreadable for me. Is there some coloring missing there? There seems to be a see-through element, too.
Sorry John, I forgot to make the link actually link to my comic...
Here.
Can't wait !

How long will this be? I'm hoping for 45 whole seconds, which is the longest an Adult Swim bumper usually is.

FANTASTICO!!!! Man, it's great to see stuff like this!
It's hard to have a line of action when you are just a head.

Ha!
If anyone can figure it out it's Kirk.

John, write that book!
it looks very beautyfull mr kricfalusi!
cheers
John, you're awesome and you're animation is even better. Looking forward to these!
I feel a strange mix of laughter and repulsion at the Pooh bear with his crotch ripped open...
No problem. I figure John must be pretty busy, so if I can help answer a question or two, why not?

These are gorgeous, John. Your construction has gotten looser. I like it. What brought this on?
It's my version of UPA
Are you going to watch the new Loonie Tunes show? The commercial didn't look promising, the voices were lackluster, but maybe the show isn't that bad.
And yes, it is disappointing when those are the standards for mainstream animation
Whoa! I love the Kirk Douglas head caricature here. How do you even get a line of action into one body part anyway?
When you see him move you will see the lines of action much clearer.
This style makes me have a flashback to being at the drive-in with my parents in the 70's and the intermingling smell of popcorn and those green, spiral things that were supposed to repel mosquitoes...memories.
completely off subject, John were you aware of this (the link)? What do you think?
