Cartoons and dinosaurs: 2 eternally cool things. Here's some more amazing Milt Stein cartoon art. He's obviously an animator but also influenced by the graphic looks of such comic strip artists as Herriman and Sterret. So cute and so stylish at the same time. A rare combination. And great backgrounds too! Milt understood the graphic power of stars. Not only did he draw nice star shapes (not easy to do!) but he always composed them into interesting patterns that framed the action. Such a killer command of graphic hierarchy... This cover is by someone else. I like how it looks like a completely different character. Masterly comic graphic sense. http://pappysgoldenage.blogspot.com/search/label/Milton%20Stein
John: Just stunning. Like you mentioned last post - the hands are just textbook great. Sometimes hardly more than little globs that just work to perfection. He makes it look so damned easy.
Off-subject but Mr. Family Guy is gonna made a reboot of a childhood classic. http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2011/05/16/willllllllllmmmmaaa-animated-flinstones-to-be-resurrected-by-seth-macfarlane/92838/
I did the same thing and went on a Milt Stein Supermouse hunt after your first post. There was one comic, Supermouse and the Pirates, over on Animation Archive from 2006 that is no longer available. Can you ask Steve to repost it?
I had a whole bunch of that stuff when I was a kid. Many times I would sit down and try to figure out why guys like Kelly and Barks appealed to me, while all of those nameless guys did not. I never could put my finger on it, and to this day I still can't figure out why someone as skilled as this guy doesn't impress me as much as someone like Walt Kelly or Carl Barks.
This guy was a genius! I wish modern publishers would get over their obsession/fetish with John Stanley for five minutes, and reprint some classic Milt Stein for a change.
great stuff. the character poses are supreme..hey Mike F--why don'y you have a blog and post some of thos character drawings--maybe some of the ren and stimpy layouts!!
HI JOHN! Are you going to address the "Seth MacFarlane Flintstones Reboot" news soon? I cannot ** wait ** to hear what you have to say!
Also, on a side note, did you have anything to do with "The Flintstones: On the Rocks?" I am seeing it today for the first time and I keep getting this John K vibe as I watch it...... I like it! Just wondering. Thanks : )
I love looking at this stuff. I'm giving a go at doing my own comic book (after years of freelance and cubicle-dwelling) and Milt Stein's attractive drawing and clear layouts are educational and inspirational. Thanks for posting!
Seth McFarlane FLINTSTONES reboot. First time I heard that I thought people were joking. Then I saw it all over the news sites. It's real. Great Humping Jove.
I assume then that you would approve us budding cartoonists studying these comics. Also, SETH MCFARLANE GOT THE FLINTSTONES OVER YOU????????????? DEVOLUTION CONTINUES!

Great comic! Great artist! Something very powerful about the colors as well.
i love all the direction and acting that the dinosaurs do. they have fun shapes on their spine that follow their flow.
Super Mouse — Live-Action http://fantasticomundodesunca.org/2011/04/20/super-mouse-live-action/
This deserves to be hung up in a museum.
These are so great! Yet another artist I had never heard about before reading about him on your blog. Thanks John!
Very cool stuff, I love old cartoony comics, especially the way they're printed!
For a moment, i thought you were going to contrast that dinosaur to the Don Bluth dinosaurs from "The Land Before Time".
Those last two are fantastic, I love the comp and the color!
Was the 'Lost Valley' panel in the Ripping Friends layout guide?

Seth McFaralane re-booting the Flintstones...
If anyone was going to do that, I'd have thought it would be John K!
There have been numerous, funny Flintstone references in Family Guy.
What do you all think of the McFarlane approach to drawing and animation?
:)

I forgot to mention — damn, I wish you were the one to get the "Flintstones Reboot" gig instead of MacFarlane... Life is so unfair it's not funny.
