Detective Story is my favorite movie , I think because Kirk reminds me so much of my Dad. Full of morals, worry, stress and manliness all in the hard act of trying to do the right thing against the evil forces of weakness all around him.
Fanny and Alexander does a good job of showing loving parents. The second half is also good, showing the "evil Preacher" character. Similar to Night of the Hunter, but without the uniquely American elements. Have you seen either film, Mr. K?
Thank you
Also, are there any animated works this last decade you believe succeeded mainly because of story, despite your correct hypothesis good animation is critical.
I would love to do an interview with you for www.breakthruradio.com.
I'm a lifelong R&S fan and we at BTR are doing a week dedicated to animation, so I thought what better way to kick that off than with a profile on you.
Let me know if we can set something up! My email is: colortvrepairman@gmail.com
WOW, that was so good I watched the rest of the movie. Thanks John for turning me on to Kirk's work. He showed so much range in that movie. Even cried a bit. Went from rage to tears to rage again in just a couple minutes, amazing.

Thank you,
Happy Father's Day to you as well John. This scene reminds me of the interrogation scene from The Dark Knight.

Dang! William Bendix, too!
Your dad is the best; how could a fool NOT want to wish the inspiration for George Liquor the HAPPIEST of Father's Days?!
"Discipline begets love."
Happy Father's Day Michael!!!

Great movie! I hadn't seen it before. Kirk Douglas was always a favorite actor. Definitely one of the greats.
I love how smoking was back then. They just stamp out the cigarette right on the office floor.
Great stuff.
Johnny K.,
Here in Brazil, the Father's Day occurs on the second Sunday of August.
This movie is rad. It's like the angriest episode of Barney Miller that never aired.
