So for each line I ink, I look for the other corresponding line that describes a form between them.
It ain't perfect but it's fun to do. I think I lost some of the triangular shape of Duke's head.
If anyone is interested in practicing their clean ups, I could put more of Jim's drawings up.
We are doing a job together now and maybe we could use another clean up artist for him.
Let me know if you wanna buy any of his art too, because he has some for sale. It's genius.

Too much manliness to ponder all at once. I think I'll go to the park and beat up sissies for a bit, and come back to it later...
Goes without saying, but that's a killer caricature!
I would really like to find out about cleaning up shots. Would you send them only by computer? What are your recommendations for hand drawn clean ups.
Jim is easily my favorite of your artist, John. NO ONE, draws men like him. Nice clean up job, I'm interested in seeing more!
Hey John, thanks for the post! I'd love to see more of jim's sketches and maybe take a stab at inking some.
I noticed you mentioned that you inked the Duke using Illustrator. Would you recommend using that over say Photoshop or Manga Studio?
Thanks!
Jim has captured the Duke perfectly.
Please put more Jim Smith stuff up!
Yeah, I'd definitely like to give cleaning up a shot. I can't guarantee that I'd be too good, but it'd definitely be great practice.
Back in the golden age, the newer guys usually did the clean ups, right?
more sketches, I would like to try clean ups
Nice!
Yeah, please, put some Jim's sketches, I will try some inking for you guys!
I love Jim's stuff! I have bought originals from him in the past and would like to again.
And yes, please, post more drawings! I'd like to take a stab at some clean-ups. I guess I could try scanning some sketches out of one of his sketchbooks too.
Yay. That's all I have to say.
Oh that is a wonderful drawing. I decided to give the inking a go, figured it would be a bit of a learning experience, and here's what I got: http://www.thislev.com/images/johnwayne_clean.png
I had not really realized just how much a clean-up artist adds. I mean, I was aware, I just never really got my hands dirty before. You did a really excellent job, John.
The drawing literally speaks for itself. Jim Smith rules!
Hey! I would love to see more of this art too! I would make an attempt at cleaning it up, too!

I like how you switched to lighter grey, brown and purple for the inside lines. It Really helps the thickest black lines on the outside stand out the most, while still getting away with luscious thick lines inside.
I love Jim Smith's work! Here's my clean-up: http://tinyurl.com/3udev2y
Sweet!
Nice drawing, your linework is amazing.
OH! I would really appreciate it if you could post more Jim Smith drawings for inking practice.

I gave her a go. That is one manly goddamn neck. I'm still a little green with a stylus. I am starting to get the hang of how to juggle layers, but I still have to hit the 'undo' button a lot to correct screw-ups. This took me about 2 hours, but I'm learning and getting faster with this rig. I used Corel Paint and Mypaint. Corel has better brushes, but Mypaint has a more intuitive interface.
nice drawing
I really admire your consideration of line weight and even how your color choices click together well.
Nice detail and form too.
Hi John, me again, I have a question.
When you put color lines, how do you know which color should have each line? Do you vary the color of the lines during the painting process? Is there some trick to this?
Thanks!
It looks like John added details that were implied in Jim's great sketch.
Please post more, John!

I had the honor of meeting Jim Smith at the Hyaena Gallery and buying two of his art books! He's such a nice guy and his art is beyond amazing!
I've never seen manly men drawn so funny and cool at the same time! I think we can all benefit from studying his drawings.
Dear John,
I'm a longtime fan. I think you are one of the greatest artists who has ever lived. I was wondering about buying original art by you and Jim Smith. Do you accept credit card?
Anyway, thank you very much for your time.
Yours sincerely,
Joel Santamaria

I can only find joy on inking when using real ink.
I've heard that Manga Studio has better brushes than Illustrator, could be worth a shot.
The linework is great, I strive to be this good one day.
I'm definitely interested in buying some original art. Please email me at giladfoss@gmail.com.
An off-topic question, but do you still watch Spongebob or any Nickelodeon show now and if you do are there any good shows?
Thank you
