Then I animated the cartoon on a cintiq using Toonboom's Animate program. It's primarily hand drawn with a few tweening cheats - and some afterfx in the middle by Kedz.
I worked with my core team of miscreants here in Northridge.

SANDRA RIVAS joined us just a couple weeks ago and assisted and colored much animation.
DIVERSITY IN CARTOONLAND
I have also been training a virtual team of talented cartoonists around the world who have been doing assistant animation.

DAVID DE ROOIJ took time away from tempting Krampus to do some assisting in Holland.

BEN ANDERS played hookey from Sheridan College to clean up some scenes.
The great Eric Bauza and the manly Jim Smith did the voices of my characters. Eddie Cruz (owner of Stussy LA and Undefeated) provided the 'tude and the voice of the Stussy Rat.
If you like the cartoon, show your love by buying a shirt from Stussy and maybe they will sponsor a series of 'em!

Absolute art! :)
Awesome!
It's a masterpiece!
Looks great John. Love the over the top style as always.
Dear John!
Great work on the commercial. I noticed though, that some of the animation notes are still visible in a few frames. You might have to disable a few layers. But maybe its a stylistic choice ;) Other than that great!
I'm a young Cartoonist from Basel, Switzerland and my eyes lit up when i read, that there are people training with you virtually. I have unfortunately not the option to go to animation school and there is no real industry in this country anyways but i'd do A LOT to learn from you! I already checked out your cartoon school and it looks great! I worked in animation before and i have Toon Boom Animate 2. So if i can be of any help to you, pleeease let me know!
To show you, where i stand artistically, i drew a Sody Pop: http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/229836_10150947485812348_2050807963_n.jpg
I tried to concentrate on the construction of the character.
Do you have Facebook? If your interested, you can check out more of my drawings there...
Unfortunately i dont have a blog (yet).
Congratulations again on your piece!
All the best

Oh, sorry! Why did my post go out three times... ?
This was a lot of fun!
Hmm, well I liked it! I feel at certain points the animation gets too busy for me to appreciate but otherwise I like the direction you're taking your animation!
haha that´s a great and colourful animation John!
Maybe the soundtrack could be a little tighter, but i´ll let it slide :)
@Moel, No animation industry? why not begin 1 you're self?
You can always send work to FANTOCHE
and who knows what can come out of it.One of my animated shorts will be screened there too.
awesome, AWeSOME!!!! Hilarious!
Great great great! I also found it on Boingboing.net. Lots of intense JohnK gut-pummeling. I experienced pooberty.
Fucking amazing! :D Looks fantastic! Congrats!
hahaha Super amazing work, John! Everything you do is like magic! I love the animation and drawings. Too funny! Amazing job to you and to those who helped out! Love this so much!
Your best work yet!
I really want to see more cartoons of Ernie and Slab! That scene with them was perfect!!
This just made my day. Thank you John K.
Should I do a bit about Emily Litella thinking that Stussy and John put "violins" back into cartoons? Nah!
It's all looking great, John. I can't wait to see it.
@ Erik
Well not "none"... Lets say its just quite small. But then , we're a small country so go figure ;)
WOW!!! cool john i will buy one of each shirt right now! great commercial! i loved bobby's hero pose at the end! john were you the voice of ernie? loved it john!
That rat-th voith thoundth like a yung ralph bakshi dont it tommy?
im gonna let you guys buy me one of those kick ass shirts.
remember, fifty fifty fifty.
Excellent work folks.
What is this "technical crap that (you) hate to do" that you are referring to?
anything that requires more than 1 key command to do what should be a simple function.
Yes Sir, I like it.
WOW WOW WOW! I LOVED THIS! FANTASTIC!
Bravo & Congrats to all the crew! Well done...! :)
Tell people what's happening!
John, this is one of the best pieces of animation that I've seen in years. I could hardly believe that this was really mostly done in ToonBoom Animate and in one continent too, instead of having to ship everything to Korea. Everything moves so smoothly without that weird Flash tweening crap that ruins any possible life the drawings could have. This is definitely the future of television cartoons if this catches on.
When I'm older, do you think I could work on at least one of your projects, like maybe when I'm almost done with college or something like that? I'm really interested in possibly doing some storyboards and layouts. It's to the point where I can draw pretty much any kind of funny cartoon out of my own head in any sort of perspective with clear silouhettes and compositions too.
Wow! Nice armlock! Bully proof Jiu-jitsu. Is anyone seeing this? Why isn't this on tv?
That was AWESOME! What an amazing treat!!
I love the animation, its so funny. I laughed out loud the minute Bobby walked into the scene! Hilarious!!! Loved it! That line about it being like the 90s was funny too, cause I remember Stussy being pretty big back then.
Anway, John, do you miss animating on paper? Would you recommend everyone use a cintiq? Do you find it limiting in any ways? Thanks for this great wonderful cartoon. Those who are working for you are such lucky bastards.
Hey John, are you planning on hiring more talented people who had Toon Boom Animate?
Also, can you please give me the full credits of this cartoon?
Congrats on the neat commercial and the Virtual Hookups, JK! You and your cohorts are on a roll!
@Moel
The netherlands (where i live)is a small country too but somehow there is a platform for animation.
Nowadays you can do a lot at home with a computer and some animation software. There is also a lot of helpful information on the internet like Johns blog where you can learn a LOT! Just start small and who knows? Maybe you can make an awesome animation like Johns Stussy cartoon some day. So good luck :)
Oh man that "win" scene was fun to watch even if it only lasted for 2-3 seconds.
I really enjoyed every bit of this animation. I'm definitely in the mood for one of those shirts!

Explain that one to the grandkids.
Ok, so I need some help. I live in Burbank, next to all of the major studios, but I'm currently doing freelance work (mostly on websites), but I've kind of come to a crossroad. On one hand, there's all of this great new technology available so independents can do wonderful and innovative things like John here (albeit he has decades of experience under his belt). On the other hand, there's a studio job, which is much more lucrative, but not very inovative and often quite ugly, and I'm not really a fan of anything they're putting out right now.
Should I:
1. Try for a studio job for the security and experience and hope that I can steer them in a direction of greater creativity?
Or
2. Try to go the independent route where I have more freedom to experiment and be creative but will have to learn more via trial and error and risk isolation from everyone I'm working with?
I would like to do what's best for my family and myself, and also what's best for cartoons in general.
I'm kind of at my wits end and keep getting mixed signals as to the best course of action and all I want is to do the best and most productive thing.
Help?
BRILLIANT!
So much fun!
Thanks John!
I wish I could make some inks or assistance in a future project. I'll show you some stuff to qualify.
Love the directness and power of the drawing's movements.
Compared to how this would've been done 10 or 15 years ago with traditional tools and equipment, was this one done for a fraction of those costs?
Are the shirts only available in the US and Canada? Those are the only shipping options I can see.
Quoting Chuck Jones:
"The Coyote was never hurt or in pain, he was insulted, as most of us are when we suffer misfortune."
The pain the characters feel, and the pain the audience empathizes with, is not the physical pain, it's the emotional pain of being insulted.
Haha! That was great John, it turned out well.
Brilliant !!
Jim's no good in the digital realm, huh? I remember him trying to go from pencil and paper to Cintiq last year when you were working on the Simpsons thing. Didn't last long.
Jim's got an amazing voice. It's too bad he's not more talkative, I could listen to him speak all day. Too bad Disney doesn't make those nature films anymore, his voice is perfect for it.
You need better animators, John. The sporadic spacing and timing doesn't bode well.
i love it John thanks for doing more cartoon animation!!!! my only sadness is that the shirts don't seem to be available in the colors that are shown in the cartoon... (hopefully they'll print them on some more colors because i like your shirt color choices better than basic black and white) (also if there was a deal for buying the complete set of 4 i'd be interested) (also i wish they'd print more of your human torch and crystal shirt)
Man that's good stuff. I love the color so much too.
Looking at various comments and the commercial, there's certainly a lot of energy at the start, harking back to Clampett, Shribner, etc., but I did notice inconsistencies (due to software hiccups, time limitations, or result of the evolving virtual work world JK used??). In any event, very promising!
BTW, this whacko news article made me wonder if the artist subconsciously referenced Stimpy as SHAMPOO MASTER when creating his own "cat copter':
http://www.cnn.com/video/?hpt=hp_c2#/video/us/2012/06/04/tsr-moos-cat-copter.cnn
Bobby Bigloaf looks like Gabe Swarr !
This turned out great! And great to have worked on!
Too bad those shirts are only available in black and white...
Not only is the animation great, but the Backgrounds are really great too. I love all the different sky colors, it's really a nice use of color. I've been thinking a lot lately in my own work about sky colors, and how to use not just blue, but also how to use colors that don't look too strange for a sky. Seems you guys got it just right.
will be great
Well, I'm just pleased that your crew got to work in a virtual environment. It would be great if more studios did the same, so we wouldn't all have to live in LA.
Thanks for continuing a welcome trend, John :)
Bobby is right. Everyone DOES hate him.
Stussy...I'll stay tuned.
is it just me or do i hear a metronome in the left channel during the beating @ about 19 seconds in? i know that metronomes are relied on heavily for timing animation--or at least have been known to be back in the day--so i wouldn't be surprised, but i wasn't sure if maybe it was just an attempt at layering foley work to make more complex sounds. it definitely has the accents and timing of a 4/4 120bpm metronome though.
Yeah
there are still some mistakes in the thing. I'll try to fix 'em in the next few days and reupload
thanks!
no problem! i'm just glad that didn't come off snarky.
Was that all inked and colored in "Animate"? How about the cg stuff? If so it seems this is a must have program.
I get what you were going for and it was funny stuff, but a little disappointing to see your work get the more flash-like, tween heavy treatment. But I guess Adult Swim and Fox have deeper pockets than Stussy..
