National Internet Loon Celebration

I love when people use other people's blogs to talk about stuff that has nothing to do with the topics in the post or to vent their anger at people who don't have their own blogs. "I know! I'll write on John's blog about someone else I want to heckle!" Smart.

I sometimes just delete the loon comments as a courtesy to the readers who are actually interested in talking about what the post is about, but I thought maybe it was time we should celebrate a "NATIONAL LOON DAY" for these people who work real hard letting everyone share in their issues.

I had one loon actually show up at my doorstep and threaten to call off the wedding. So let's all share a moment of honorable silence for the screaming minority that can only be heard on the internet.

Of course John has essentially opened the flood gates and now people will write random insane gibberish so they might get featured.

Haha

To celebrate Loon Day I'll wear my pants up to my armpits, wear funny collored shoos, bounce around on my head and say silly stuff.

Merry Loons day to everyone!

and now please bugger off to someone elses blog (not mine) to annoy other people and leave John to his bussiness.

Sad to think there are those that even Wackyland would reject.

If you're gonna be a loon at least be creative.

By the way, I happen to think Mike is a genius.

I'm sorry to hear that Glenn Beck called off the wedding. He looks absolutely crushed about it too, poor pitiful bastard...

Hey John, first of all, GREAT TOPIC! I hate those internet LOONS as well! Your blog is the best blog in the universe and I want to tell you that I'm your biggest fan! In fact, I think that "Ren and Stimpy" is the greatest cartoon of all time! (Much better than Disney's"Marsupilami", IMHO) By the way, who's your favourite anime director? Do you agree that episode 37 of "Dragon Ball Z" is better animated than episode 45 of "Gundam Wing"? Hey, when you get a moment, can you take a look at my website to give feedback on ALL of my drawings? I want to make sure all that studying from the Christopher Hart books is paying off so that someday I can animate for you, because that's my lifelong dream! You're the most AWESOME cartoonist of all time, John K!!!

(PS: Tell Mike Fontanelli that he's a loudmouth snook and he smells like pee...)

I genuinely pity you because some of these people would really scare me.

Before the internet existed, these people just sat in their living room and talked at the radio. Now its like everyone has their own TV show.

Your great tutorials and lessons though, and the feedback from your students always eclipse the nutbag comments, and for that I am really grateful.

I guess in the long run, life is just one big crazy cartoon anyway.

In honor of National Internet Loon Celebration day, I have taken my previous comment and translated it back and forth from English to Japanese to English 2 times. Please enjoy.

Before the advent of the Internet, the radio reported, these people just sat in their living room. Nobody like you have their own TV show. However, feedback from your great tutorials and lessons, students nutbag comments always Eclipse, therefore I'm grateful really. I think if you look in the long run anyway life one big crazy cartoon.

I suspect that what you're getting is actually spam. Spambots are getting cleverer -- they are using psuedo sentences taken from elsewhere on the Internet, or even AI-based babble-generators. The litmus test: If the comment has a link in it, but otherwise doesn't really make any sense, there's a very good chance that it's just deep-fried spam.

Which is too bad for us silly people who amuse ourselves with our own whimsy. We're in competition with the machines.

Dude, that's a spambot . . .

Spambots have gotten so smart these days. This one user went a whole year on this message board I post on and never got detected. We just thought he was a bit odd or foreign. He didn't even post links for the longest time, but sure enough he was a bot.

I'd like to contribute (after reading through the archives and current posts for the past year) and offer a contrast of sorts to loon day and say that I'm crazy about this blog--and, thinking about it, this blog would have changed my life had I read it back when I was obsessed with Looney Toons and wanted to be an animator. I moved from drawing to music to writing, but, looking back on it, Ren & Stimpy going off the air and the subsequent lack of inspiring cartoons quickly diverted my attention to other things. Back in middle school, I thought construction was simply for people who didn't have enough talent to get it right on their own. This blog would have changed my life back then, but it has certainly had an impact on it now. For one thing, I started drawing again. The blog and cartoon school are really selfless contributions (though I know you say it is to make your job of finding good animators easier!) and important educational resources for anyone interested in fundamentals and advanced topics in animation and art. It's the kind of thing that addresses timeless principles that no amount of technology can replicate (unless the software companies hire you for a consultant!). Thanks for the passion, insights, and, of course, looniness!

As others have mentioned, those comments you're getting do look more like the work of "Spambots" than actual people. Occasionally on my site I get very generic comments like "Very interesting blog! I like a lot!", followed by a link to some site that's selling something. Yeah, just annoying spambots, although I'm envious that you at least get more eccentrically entertaining ones than I do!

I found the Amazon listing for IDW and Craig Yoe's upcoming Spumco Comic Book collection:

http://www.amazon.com/John-Presents-Spumco-Comic-Book/dp/1613774907/ref=sr_1_34?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1351305386&sr=1-34

Please let it include all the fake ads, editorials, prose stories and other cool stuff.

Also, John K., why don't you create a new Spumco message board at Ning.com? It would take some money to maintain it, but it could prove a solid community for your fans.

Hi John, you crazy cartoonist!

With all the loons aside, I was wondering if you're going to post an update soon on the Cans Without Labels cartoon. I'd love to see what's happening. No Hurries though.

Thanks!

I came across a loon recently. He told me to shoot myself for holding no ill will towards either Jon Lovitz or Barack Obama. What a jerk.
