NOW I UNDERSTAND EVERTHING!!!

I always wanted to know why the man in that song says all that stuff. Now I know why.

I'd really recommend Burl Ives to anyone who hasn't heard him, or has only heard his christmas songs. I started listening to him as a joke (only knowing him from Ren & Stimpy), and soon realized he was one of the greatest and most versatile performers in American History. I'm not kidding either, I think Mount Rushmore should just be remade in his image. Frank Black is a big fan of him also.

coincidentally I just finished part one of a Rudolph parody comic where I have a Sam the Snow man character get killed. And I named him Burl instead of Sam.

The first time I saw Ren and Stimpy it never dawned on me anyone who worked on it would know who he was! I thought the semblences were a fluke.

I agree with Don Draper. He makes everything sound like xmas.

I love the fact his "wholesome, sincere" album depicts him holding a long cigar. That's the sort of old fashioned American folksiness that is all but dead in this day and age: masculine and yet not threatening.

Off topic:

The onion AV club give Mighty Mouse a good rating.

Burl Ives would have voiced his character in "Space Madness" if he'd have known what Ren and Stimpy actually was. He was very elderly then but still a wizened curmudgeon with a one-of-a-kind voice. A rare talent for sure.

Sorry to comment on an old post - Just wanted to add that several Burl Ives songs were featured in the film "Fantastic Mr. Fox" last year. "Buckeye Jim" in particular elevates one scene to a whole 'nother level. I dug deeper into his catalog as a result and hope others did too!
