I'd recommend the second product on that page "Toon Boom Animate" for $699 if you are just starting. It has great ink and paint tools and it's pretty easy to animate in.
I just got Toon Boom over the weekend and I'm surprised how quickly I was able to jump right in. compared to flash anyway. I still suck at animating of course, but I'm trying to see what kind of exercises I can do to practice. Any advice on that from anyone would be great.
This was my first test with it, trying to convey weight. I know, it ain't pretty. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v177/gmcube/toonboom.gif
that look's sweet! hey one simply question! i recently hear the produccion music of ren & stimpy, and i found out that a song it's from spongebob too! nickelodeon own all the produccion music of ren & stimpy?
Unfortunately, Animate is not on sale now. I've bought it last year for only $299, so if people want to buy it I think they'd better wait for another sale.
Oh, Mr. K. I always love your artwork...and your commentaries on the "Looney Tunes" DVDs. You have some of my favorite rubbery animations and some of the most wonderfully grotesque character designs. I know you probably hear that a lot, but what's one more.
Honestly I was playing with TB Studio last month and found it to be astoundingly capable. Looking at the feature comparison chart the only things missing are symbols and morphing - and Studio has video capture while Animate and Animate Pro doesn't, how strange!
That said I found myself compelled to do a little bit of animation this past week and ended up using Flash because the TB Studio trial had expires, and *am* making judicious use of symbols for moving holds. But in the age of YouTube they're nowhere near as crucial as they were back when we were doing WPH.
I find it very interesting how you have evolved in your technique. What do you think this could be a attributed to? Working on computers? Or just drawing different way with age?
If you want something that's fairly cheap but powerful try out Anime Studio Pro (stupid name, yes). It's what I've been using for many years and it's a damn powerful program.
It's sort of like Flash but way less wonky and more animator friendly.
Right now, the Pro version is running at $200 and the debut is running at $50.
It has a free demo. Try it out! It's a really really powerful program.
Not a lot of people know about it and a lot of people overlook it because there's a lot of amateur looking work done with it on the web (the low price is a blessing and a curse I guess...).
I've seen some very beautiful looking work done by the few professionals who do know the program. I hope it'll catch on in the professional world in the near future.
I actually bought toon boom with a student discount, thanks to my cousin. I don't remember the site, but you can get it there for only $300 if your a student.
Juan, Ren and Stimpy didn't create their own production music, neither did Spongebob. Most of it is public domain music that various cartoons use. You can hear a lot of same music cues in varying series since it is cheaper to do that then hire someone to create original music.
If you search APM music on Youtube you'll find all of their tracks, APM is the company that produced the majority of Ren and Stimpy and Spongebobs Music.
I use an Axiotron Modbook with Mac OS 10.6.8. running on it. It's amazing because it's basically a mini-Cintique tablet. Great for drawing and animating on the go, for hand-drawn OR CG/Flash animation (using the pen stylus for CG puts less pressure on the nerves in your wrist).
Question for John K: have you heard of/used the Modbook? I know you use a Cintique so the smaller Modbook might come in handy for you if you travel a lot or (like me) frequent coffee shops and book stores.

I've never seen a more accurate depiction of furries in cartoon form!

haha are they at a furry convention?
God forbid if there actually was a Fur-Con.

I've been Animating with Studio, for over a year now, but haven't really started to get into Animate Pro 2...
I only tried making some 3D stuff :S
Jesus Christ , 699? Anything A Little Cheaper?
That's the same price as Flash, isn't it?
and like Harmke said, sometimes they put it on sale.
They also have Toonboom studio which is very cheap and does basically the same stuff.
click the link and check it out.
Ugh, I hate waiting!! This looks so cool!

I'll field this one;

Amazing. I think the true test of great animation is that each still frame seems to move when seen in isolation. These do.
I really like the colours and how from a distance your drawings look textured, yet it's just line work/slight hatching or dots.
Do you do this as you go along or when you colour?
Damn. $250!!
@James N. What computer hardware are you using?
