HA! It's about time you got into expressing your opinion on this since almost every Spumco production has at least one trademark detailed close up of things.
That last picture reminds me of a contest we had over on Polykarbonbbs.com, drawing mythical monsters. One of the ones mentioned was Vagina dentata. Creepy!
I'm sorry John if this comment may seem out of place on this topic but I need your guidance. I've been visiting your blog for quite awhile and I've found it very informative but also very overwhelming. I wanted to ask if you could point me in the right direction, where to start first as far developing solid cartoon drawing. A plan, maybe...
Hey John K!I'm always reading but never posting anything...but I'm back to irritate you! There's a comic book I want you to read that has been consuming my time, it's pretty cool. All the drawings look pretty solid to me, but mostly after the third part. And the stories are really well planned and funny. It's Called Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, it's pretty far along but easy to catch up with.
Also it's an adventure comic so it's not alway "haha", but please take a look. I personally love it, even when it's insane; but take note, it was started in 1987, and wasn't making me angry as a gleam in my mother's eye.
This reminds me of a story by Ray Bradbury: "The Man in the Rorschach Shirt." Basically, a rosy-eyed Panglossian optimist finally gets around to buying a pair of glasses and sees that people's faces are filled with crater-like pores.
Holes and dents are always going to create deep contrasts. I think our eyes are always naturally drawn to places where values and colors contrast. It let's us spot yummy berries, and animals we can hunt and eat, and warns us where we should and shouldn't step.

Nice close-ups of Rosie O'Donnell's skin. Saw her and Tommy Lee Jones on hi-def widescreen once - a pretty good argument against blu-ray and HDTV.
The beauty of nature.
This post isn't up to quota in plumbing fixtures.
Holes and Dents make me think of Wally Wood
I think thats what drew me to both Wally Wood and Basil Wolverton from a young age. They could draw the heck out of holes and dents.

Absolutely gorgeous. Geometric, but completely organic at the same time. Unbelievable...
