Here's part of an assignment from the latest cartoon college blog

Here are a bunch of different styles and types of trees. They all have things in common: Good design and hierarchy, and good composition within the BGs.
The overall shape of each tree is interesting

and then the sub shapes

fit nicely within the big shapes - wrapping wround them. Then the smallest details do the same.

I love Jim's backgrounds!!! I love Jim in general too, haha.
Thank you for posting these! I've been posting my work from your assignments...I had to attempt Shere-Khan too after TJ did, and I'll be finishing up more and posting them today! Could you take a look? Give me some direction? Pretty Please :)

Glad to have found your blog! It is interesting.
AAAAAAAAAAAh
It's great that you still let us know about your stuff and not doing it exclusive for your students, thanks :)
Wow, look at that Pogo panel and that crazy Howie Post tree. Great examples.
ahh...the yogi scooter bg is gorgeous!
I hadn't seen the 'bg tips for Nate' post before - very helpful, especially the 'don't distort everything' bit.

thanks,
paul.
These trees are the bees knees! Thanks John! I never noticed in my childhood how elaborate and abstract those Hot Stuff BG were!
Hi John, i've posted another comp on my blog. Would really love to know if i'm going in the right direction with them. Thanks for your time.

You should do a post on clouds and water like you've done with the Howie Post Tree King post.
Actually, I'd like to see a post on drawing hands and any theories you may have about it.
Drawing good cartoon hands is a mystery to me.
Just finished drawing a Hot Stuff panel and it was a lot of fun. Hard to grasp just how well everything flows together before actually attempting to draw it. I've earned a new appreciation for Howie Post.

WOW, this is so awesome!
I knew you had those students, but i didnt know how it worked. I´ve been doing the assingnments of your 100000 cartoon school for a long time and copying (with construction) as you suggested, but never had the idea of posting them on a blog... will do that soon.
and how can we become your students? What do we have to do? please answer, I´m tired of these schools that teach that "betty edwards" stuff, it doesnt have much future.
Those Howie Post trees are pretty psychedelic... but well constructed.
John K I believe its your birthday today I might be wrong but HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! you have been a huge influence on me and it was great meeting you at comic con!
Sincerly
Joshua E Cohen
that yogi panel is amazing.
