Lost Episodes of Ren and Stimpy - sneak previews 2

The response to the last Lost Episodes clips was so great, that I've decided to tease you some more...

And pre-order the DVDs from Amazon! You can rate it too based on these lovely clips. We picked clips of stuff that we figured you can't get in any other cartoons-hot chicks, cartoon violence and all the things that make for decent human entertainment.

Naked Beach Frenzy, eh? I cannot wait for the Lost Episodes DVD, John! Were these episodes really written back when Ren & Stimpy debuted on Nickelodeon? What made you decide to add a more adult element to the cartoon?

Oh, and post more vids if you can! :-)

Geez. I don't know what to say...
I mean you certainly don't see that everyday.
For me, why go half way. (ok, no more rhyming!)
Why didn't you go as far with the dialogue? Like swearing?
If I remember right, didn't the early Popeye strips or cartoons have Popeye swearing a blue streak under his breath?

Thanks for the link!

Love the back of the card, especially the drawing of Ren (from Big House Blues I think).

Evan said...

I love that Ren reprises his line "I'M THEEE CAT!" like in Big Shot.

Once again I'll mention that Naked Beach Frenzy is my favorite of the APC episodes. It feels just like a classic Ren & Stimpy to me (but with some boobies).

I've been watching Ren and Stimpy since I was a kid, and when (I think Black hole, or Space Madness) first aired, there was a scene with Ren and Stimpy both screaming and being stretched because of the speed they were going at. Durring this scene, the first time it played on T.V., I could have sworn there was a cut to an audience watching that scene on their T.V., and I assume they were excited to see what would happen next. Did this scene exist, or did my mind create this memory on its own?

I would love to see the straight to DVD episodes of Ren and Stimpy you mentioned! The Spumco Ren and Stimpy never got all the time it deserved, and it's a damn shame

Chloe Cumming said...

Cartoons make so much more sense when they do that coming to life and jiggling about thing!

Then all the frightening adult stuff with breasts just seems like more joyous life affirming joycrap.

Those were touching and thoughtful words on your red greeting card thing there. Imaginary loinfruit indeed.

I'm going to have to make it so I qualify as a 'cartoonist girl' or something...

Woooowwww!!!! The clip from "Naked Beach Frenzy" had me laughing out loud. The part where the girls rub Stimpy all over them is hilarious and just when you rhink it can't get any funnier the lifeguard gags kick in. This is definitely on the short list of the funniest cartoons ever made. In fact, it might be the funniest.

Also many, many thanks to David and Evan for restoring the missing "Sven Hoek" footage. I (and about ten other people) watched in open-mouthed amazement while John drew the threat scenes that this is part of. I felt like I was watching animation history in the making because nothing like this had been done on TV before.

It also showcased a new and wonderful John drawing style. We'll never know where this would have led because Nick took the series away and John consoled himself by pioneering FLASH cartoons and creating yet another new drawing style. You can see it in the funniest Ranger Smith poses in "Boo Boo Runs Wild."

Hey John,

I want to Thank You for everything that you have done and doing as we speak. Not only for the enjoyment of Ren & Stimpy. But bringing me to the interest of animation and cartoons. Sure I love watching Looney Tunes before as a kid and even today. But it was Ren & Stimpy that WOWED Me and being interested in cartoon animation. For me thinking, this was one of the things that my mother banned me from watching. And I didn't even watch an episode before until I went to Blockbuster in 1998.

Thanks to you John, not only I can do puppetry, but making my own cartoons as well.

And one of my favorite quotes from you is "If you can do one thing, you can do five things."

I'm glad and onnered for having you as my 2nd idol.

That's probably a Fleischer reference, when some characters like Popeye mumble, but his lips don't move. That's okay, because the mumblings aren't that important to animate. Anyway, I love what I saw in the Naked Beach Frenzy clip. I'd kill to be where Stimpy is right now. :D

They could have made lots of money had they made a series-that's what I think.

Hi Jesse!

My favorite Tex Avery cartoon? That's easy! If you can accept the three best lecherous wolf cartoons as one big cartoon then that's my favorite, hands down.

For me "Red Hot Riding Hood", "Little Rural Riding Hood" and "Swingshift Cinderella" are the most realistic depiction of male sexuality in all of film. Tex knew what guy life is really about. A girl walks in the room and every guy unravels and goes berserk. That's it. That's the whole of it. If you know that then you know everything important about men. I can hardly believe that so many writers and artists manage to ignore it or underplay it.

Flintstones on The Rocks, designed by Craig Kellman, directed by Chris Savino. I heard it was really good, like the best Flintstones since the first season. I wanna see it! I believe Genndy produced it.

Hey John.
Just a quick question if you'd be so kind.

This has always racked my brain for longer than I'd like to go into.

In the first "Ren Seeks Help" clip, Dr Mr Horse asks Ren to sit down.
Ren responds to him...
But why doesn't Ren's mouth move when he talks there?
I've always thought it was because the audience was getting to hear what's in his head.
But then you hear Dr Mr Horse responding to him.
This particular part of the scene has always confused me.

Why doesn't Ren's Mouth move?
Is there a specific reason for this, or have I always thought to deeply into it?

Respects.

Duck Dodgers said...

Yep, Thad!
It is a sort of in-joke .
It reminds Ren's same line and situation ( Ren pretending to be a cat) in "Stimpy's Big Day".

bitwize said...

I love the billiard ball sound the lifeguard's nuts make as they swing in his swimming trunks.

One thing I've always loved about R&S is the sound effects. When I was 14 I called them "inaccurate" sound effects but that's not right. Nearly all cartoon sound effects are inaccurate. It's just that cartoon sounds have become cliche, and R&S often used an entirely different sound, or used the same sound in a different way. The wet, sloshy sound that Stimpy's ass would make when he wiggled it was always a fave. In Nurse Stimpy, Stimpy peels back the covers to reveal a filth-encrusted Ren, and the canonical cartoon "Pee-yew" sound is heard -- a foghorn -- but this time you hear seagulls in the distance for no reason except completeness: wherever you hear foghorns you also tend to hear seagulls. That was awesome.

Are you retarded dude? I don't know what your talking about but the voices tallent they have working on this show is some of the best in the world! If there's a generic sounding voice, more often than not it's intentional but you;d have to be more specific if your going to be making broad statements like that!

By the way, Billy West was Great but Eric is an AMAZING stand in! I never thought anyone would be able to do that voice out side of Billy! How'd you ever find him John?

Hi John,

Long time reader first time commenter. I hada question Sven Hoek. I seem to remember that when it aired first run that Funeral March of the Marionettes was used in the beginning part of the episode (i think up to the point that Sven arrives)

When I saw the episode a few years ago it had been changed to a different music bed.

Any chance that it will be restored to it's original form? I know this is totally nitpicking, but I have such fond memories of that episode (which to this day I have memorized word for word) and I'd love to have a copy of it as I remember it.

Thanks in advance!

John,

The Flintstone thing was called "Over the Rocks" and It's from that guy "Chris Savino" who took over Dexter and The Powerpuff Girls. Confidently, I like the original Genndy Tartakovsky and Craig McCracken episodes myself.

Did you know that Genndy is going to direct the sequal to the Jim Henson masterpiece "The Dark Crystal 2: The Power of the Dark Crystal" ?

Hey Arvin

There were two different versions of Sven Hoek made. The one with different music you describe was on the Time-Life DVD set.

With John's permission (it's his DVD after all) I'd like to ask the DVD guys to include both verisons on the Ultimate set if there's any room left over and if it's possible. The restored version with the closet scene and eye-gouging line and the other version without the additional material and with the alternate music.

I remember "Ren seeks Help", when Ren does something so terrible to Stimpy that he visits Mr. Horse for counseling. Ren went rabid mad in the end, but I've always thought Ren going mad in "Space Madness" was the best because he was hysterical and paranoid as well. I hope that the sales of the Spumco DVDs will bring Spumco back to TV and show kids want real cartoons are like.

The lost episodes look great!

But why are all the R&S DVDs Region 1 only? Here in Europe (Region 2 according to the post-WW2 pecking order), that means you need a cracked DVD player to play them. Or you have to download them from filesharing. But that means less money for John K's further creations!

This seems stupid to me. If there's only a Region 1 version why not make it region-free instead?

Keep up the good work as this blog is totally compuslive.

lyris said...

>> This seems stupid to me. If there's only a Region 1 version why not make it region-free instead?

The studios are all set on region coding. Multi regional players are 100% legal and online are no more expensive than a single region player.

BTW, there is a British version of the R&S Seasons 1 & 2 DVDs coming out in September, but the British Film Censors (who rate every DVD sold in the UK) have cut the "Hanging Song" out of Out West because they think people will copy it. Ridiculous. Read more here: http://www.lyris-lite.net/fu_archives/000313.html

I also quizzed the bone-headed censors who made the decision (more at that link). It's not Paramount's fault - it's the British Board of Film Censors'.
