Basil Wolverton is one of the most original and funniest cartoonists of all time. He invented this crazy gross but cute style that no one has ever topped. He inspired the gross closeups in Ren and Stimpy and lots of 60s cartoonists, including R. Crumb. He was also a preacher!
You have to see his art in the flesh!

We went on a trek to Santa Ana last Saturday to see his wonderful stuff.

Of course Kali and Eddie just had to get some free ground pig faces nearby.

Basil predicted Eddie.

The show is free, but you'll want to pick up a really great book on Basil's work while you're there.

Dangit, we don't get stuff like this in the southeast, at least not within decent driving distance. The last decent show was a Dali exhibit about seven years ago.
Ooh only 350 miles from me. I know what I'll do as part of my vacation!
We must've just missed you guys Saturday! Anyone that wants to see funny drawings and hilarious comics must check out this exhibit. That question-mark shaped brain still cracks me up.
I've definitely seen at least one or two of those poses in Ren & Stimpy, although - and I don't like saying it - the episode that comes to mind had Dom DeLuise as The Big Kahuna, and it was produced by Games.
You didn't mention anything about that Wolverton caricature of Jimmy Durante. It was excellent. Were there any others like that?
Dammit ! Dammit ! DAMMIT ! WHY IS ALL THE GOOD CARTOONY STUFF ALWAYS IN CALIFORNIA !!!!!!!!!!!
Why the hell does nothing remotely like this ever happen in Europe, let alone the UK...
I'm planning on going next weekend!!!
Hey, John..
Does the new book have art that isn't included in the other "Wolvertoons" book???
I'm glad to see cartoonists alike enjoy one of Minnesota's finest exports - SPAM!
I wish I could make it down to see that Wolverton collection, but it only runs until November! Anyone know if it's a traveling exhibit?
Oh, yeah, you guys in California enjoy your steaming bowl of culture, while I watch hungrily from the prison that is Ohio, occasionally tossing a vintage vinyl toy against the bars, more out of habit than anything. :' (

hahahahha look behind Kali and Eddie, there is some kid crying. "MY GROUND PIG FACES DON'T HAVE ENOUGH FACES IN IT!".
[Does the new book have art that isn't included in the other "Wolvertoons" book???]
Yeah, Shawn - the new book is pretty good, actually. Excellent copy-to-graphics ratio, nice big full-page reproductions, etc.
(The only real drawback is a completely clueless introduction by Doug Harvey, who doesn't seem to have any idea what Wolverton was all about.
There are more relevant, to-the-point blurbs on the back cover from famous cartoonists - any one of whom could have provided a much better introduction, had they been asked.)
This is a minor carp, though. The introduction is only a couple of pages, and it's a very thick book.
The important thing is you should pick it up even if you already own WOLVERTOONS.
Even though there's some overlap of material, it's not too bad. And the new book reproduces Wolverton's pencil layouts and lots of rare, unpublished pieces - plus some pretty cool color photos of the man himself - making it a must-have.
But by all means try to make the trek - it's worth it. The exhibit closes fairly soon - early November, I think - so don't put it off too long...
Great stuff!
Wow! That show looks great! Were those for sale?
You shouldn't be standing so close to that humongous Wolverton. It looks like Eddie is getting sucked into his ear!
Maybe that's what inspired the song lyric, "They say don't go, on Wolverton Mountain..."
Wish I could go. I love his work. California has had it's far share of awesome shows lately.
When I saw the examples of Wolverton in your latest blogs, I didn't know of him but his art reminded me of a cool puzzle set I had as a kid. You can definatley see his influence. I posted pictures of them on my blog cause I thought you'd get a kick out of them. Super creative stuff.

Eddie needs a cartoon show made just about him. The man is clearly a cartoon character stuck in the flesh of a man.
Wow, I can't believe I'm gonna miss this.
basil is a sharp shooter no doubts... robert crumb owes him a great deal. Original deal for certain. It is a sad reflection of our day to day bollocks that we haven't had another similarly striking hero to look up to

Haw! Great photos! The exhibit was terrific and the book is definitely worth having!
I saw a poster up for this on campus. I'm going this weekend. Great heads up!
He has such a delicious first name for making such grotesque drawings!
