I definitely don't have the stuff it takes to be part of your cartooning class. I don't even have that type of money on me nor am I old enough. Good luck with these classes though. This is gonna be cool.
Will this be an online course, or will it be taught in the LA area?
LA
How many of these are you planning on doing? Will you still be doing 'em in a year?
It's an experiment. If it works out and people improve vastly, I will be eager to keep doing it.
Damn you, people who live in LA! If you don't take this chance, I'll hate you forever!
Yes!I am gonna be there so bad! What are the required requisite besides skill? how do we prove we have skill?
read the post where it tells you
it's moments like these i wish i lived in L.A. I hope it's successful, then maybe i can do it next year!
I don't even know the basics. The art teachers at school do everything BUT teach you the basics.
BUUUUUUUU!!!
I'm in Chile!!
The cartoon online college is still stand?
Damn!
There's a link to the basics in the post
Hey John,
How strictly is this open to LA residents only?
I live in Australia, but I'd sell myself for the chance to participate in this!
Thanks
Dan
I hope it works wonderfully, John! You southern Californians better take advantage.
This is great news.
Do you have an idea yet of how soon something like this would start? Summer, Fall? Later?
I've got the books you've recommended, the light box, and I have done some of the lessons already, I will get to work on posting them and finishing the others!
this is amazing! i'll see what i can scrap together!
That's awesome, John!! I wish I could afford it. I hope it goes well!! People need to know the truth about cartoons!!
Hi John, Long time reader first time poster. I'd like to try out but where do I submit the link to my blog? Thanks.

Hey John, starting the blair lessons now!
Will it be in the summer? If it's not, I'd even consider taking a semester off of school to come. I'm super excited!
"Do you have an idea yet of how soon something like this would start? Summer, Fall? Later?"
If I get at least 10 people, I'll start in a couple weeks
Ive done all the lessons from your blog and from the preston blair book ,but Im not sure If I mastered It though
still intrested in hearing more about this cartooning class
JEEZ! Why'd I have to be born and raised in New Jersey? lol
I really wish I lived in LA, John, because I'd be the first to sign up!
Bummer! I wish I lived in the area, I would totally do it!
JK, the class sounds like a great idea. Perhaps it will lead to founding another small unit to move Heartaches or another project forward?
If I lived in LA I'd try qualifying but unfortunately can't stretch 1400 miles. :-)
wow.
do you have dorms?
1200 is a bit too much for me, plus im in las vegas. HOW ABOUT A DVD OF YOUR LESSONS! haha well hopefully it goes really well and you set up a second class sometime later, when I'm making more money.
Awesome John!!! This is the opportunity of a lifetime for serious animatologists!
Wow. Unfortunately I live in NY. Out of curiousity, is there an age requirement? Do you have to college aged?
Amazing! About time, sir. I hope it works out.
Hey John,
Here's a link to some of my work. (It's a few years old, I've been caught up working for the darkside of the force building Flash ads and apps for clients)
http://www.burntimagestudios.com/pages/tour00.htm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCoWdJz8GFo
It will be nice as hell to get back to the roots and learn from someone who knows what they're doing.
Anyways, I'm in Santa Monica, ready to spend the time, effort, and did I say ching? So let me know. I don't want to get too ahead of myself, so if you dig the work and accept my submission I'll have some more questions for you.
Thanks,
Theo
John please come to New York and do a workshop like this. Lots of cartoon nerds out here.
Seriously. We will find some place to put you up and give you a guest lecturer position for six weeks.
Hi John, i'm definitely interested in taking the course. I started a blog a while back, and posted various exercises on them. They aren't in exact order, but i'm wondering if there is enough on there to meet your criteria. Thanks.
blog
Sadly, there is no way I can get to the class at the moment (airfare emigration etc). But could I have advice on my studies and possibly join the cartoon college? studieseverywhere.blogspot.com
Gaaaaah I don't want to live in Barcelona I want to live in LA!!!
If it was 12 classes in 12 days i'd come to LA LA Land just for that...
I wish you luck in your classes, Mr. K.
I would love to take this class and I live in the LA area. However, I would need time to go through the 7 drawing lessons in order to have something to be considered for the class. I'm in the midst of a very intense project that will be wrapping up in mid June. I'll try to squeeze in the drawing lessons during my work on this project, but I'll definitely have more time once the project is completed. Would you wait for someone like me in considering applicants? Are you planning on posting a deadline for "applications"?
How old do you have to be to participate. I'm 17 and won a couple Nickelodeon contests/awards 4 my animation. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyHWnwNk1jA). I grew up looking and " bad" cartoons and would love to get the chance to start over and learn correctly
If you are of college age or older and you have some fundamental 40s drawing skills
do you have a website with some of your drawings?
I'm not teaching animation in the first 6 weeks- just good cartoon drawing and some functional posing
no flash
pencils
I'm in San Diego, so I can totally go if I qualify! Let me get my stuff together on a blog, then I'll post the link.
Hey John
I was doing the cartoon lessons last summer and you even posted them on your blog:
Here
But I had to stop because I started working on this:
My Cartoon
Anyway, I'd like to hear what you think if you have the time. I applied a lot of what I've learned from your teachings to this. I'm in the LA area too, if this will qualify me for you classes. Thanks!
Maybe sometime you could do a revised version for people out of town?
A 10 lessons in 2 weeks intensive?
I'd love to go, but with work and money being tight it would be really hard to stay in LA for six weeks.
(maybe August? That's when I have summer vacation from my teaching job, just sayin)
Maybe a whole bunch of us can pitch in together to get a crummy hotel room and live in hellish cramped conditions for 6 weeks.
Good idea Geneva! I'll bring the roach spray...
@ Geneva
I'm down!
wish that i lived in LA
My regret is that I live on the east coast. I'd love to be able to attend these courses, much less as an alternative to a REAL animation school, Bachelor's degree be damned.
...Why was I born in NC? :( I have to relocate to LA pronto!! Hope you still have the class going when I get there!
Man, this is really cool!
Hey Mr. K,
This is Rodrigo. I'm very interested in possibly taking these courses. I'm currently doing a self study using Andrew Loomis' books, but this sounds great. Do you offer financial assistance, because I can't pay that type of dinero.
I did the animation drawing lessons about 3 years ago.
Animation Drawing Lessons
regards.
I wish I could take 6 weeks off work to stay in LA.
You LA folks need to get this going big time so John moves this into an online venture. Make it happen!
I'm definitely interested John. In LA and have the dough. How different will this class be from following the Blair curriculum?
Will you create a page with more information soon that has details like where and when, a peak at the format, etc.?
best
kenny
I envy anyone who lives in the LA area.
Anybody have an email for John K?
Awesome. I'm saving my money for that. It will take me forever though.
i don't imagine there's any sort of scholarship opportunity for this...
*sigh*
i DO live in L.A., but i barely have $1,200 for rent-- let alone a cartooning class. still, the very thought of being instructed by the great john k. makes my mouth water. creatively speaking, of course. what a fantastic opportunity. were i a less responsible parent i'd be there in a heartbeat.
What days of the week will it be on?
Thank in advance for your response.
Hey John -
I'm interested. I started the lessons the day when I saw the post - so far I've finished the first 3 and posted them here.
I'll have the next four done in a few days.
Hey John my name is JC and I would love to be a part of this. I started lesson1 and posted it here=
http://www.jcgonzalezjohnkschool.blogspot.com/
thanks!
Finally finished lesson 7, taking into account your recent "Don't just copy" post.
Hey John, here's my blog with the lessons and some other stuff from Preston Blair's book (some of my drawings are based on the less appealing edition of the book. That's not a big problem, right?)
If it's still not good enough, please tell me what's missing and I'll work on it like hell.
I don't live in LA (I don't even live in the US), but I could stay in a hostel or something like that for the cartooning class duration. (I have family at Santa Cruz, but I think it's really far away from LA)
Here it is:
http://guycxtoons.blogspot.com/
Boy do I want to drop everything, move down to LA and be part of this!
Hope this turns out Great, JohnK!
