Looney Health Issues

Does breaking your leg make you a cripple? I heard that we aren't allowed to say "cripple" anymore. We have to say "better off" or something.

I hope they bury me in this position.

I have never seen this condition before, but I like it. Does Daffy have the Shingles?

Daffy In Book Revue-Cartoony Believable Action

Here is the exact opposite of the "Human-Animal-Hybrid" school of animation that is so prevalent today (Shrek, Mr. Fox etc.). This is totally cartoony, completely unrealistic, yet far more believable as a living character than all those restrained, cautious and unsure-of-themselves detailed stiff modern things.

I first saw Book Revue shortly after I discovered Great Piggy Bank Robbery, Coal Black and a few other of Clampett's classics. I was initially disappointed with Book Revue because there was no story. It seemed to be a throwback to early 30s Merrie Melodies where things come to life for no reason. But I found that a lot of the scenes stayed with me - I couldn't get them out of my mind. This Daffy Duck scene is one of them. It seems like almost nothing (storywise) is happening, yet the animation of Daffy commands serious attention. Something about him and his severe belief in his mission is riveting.
STAGGERS

These are some great staggers. Bob Jaques used to call Ren and Stimpy "the Stagger Show" which I hadn't noticed until he pointed it out.
I love the way Daffy shudders to the Jazz music.
The animation in Clampet's cartoons is so different than in the other WB directors'. I was watching some 50s Looney Tunes last night with Mike Fontanelli and it was clear that they had devolved into "Layout Cartoons" (like what I do), rather than "animated cartoons". They are expertly done, but the movement eventually became secondary to the poses.
In my favorite fully animated cartoons, I am not as aware of particular held poses as I am of the whole actions themselves - and especially when the characters are so driven from within themselves that they don't seem to be drawings at all.
BIG ARC IN JUMP

You don't see these drawings in Daffy's jump, but you feel the dynamism of the action because the arc is so high.






DETERMINED WALK
This walk is great. It isn't just a standard formula walk; it really makes you feel how determined Daffy is in whatever he is about to do. Nothing else is important to him except his mission.
Part of that feeling is in the drawings-his expression and poses, but it's also in the great timing.
Daffy, even though he is skinny and slight, has weight and force in the walk. Can someone explain to me why CG characters have no weight? They always seem to be skating to me.

There is absolutely nothing realistic in this animation, yet to me, it's far more believable than anything modern that is crafted from Satan's recipe of formula and fear.
These animators in the 1940s had amazing confidence. They just took the scenes, did them fast with no executive interference, no formula and made the characters come to life. I think it's partly because they didn't think much of what they were doing. They took their amazing skills for granted.



This is sheer beauty to me-not just n the abstract of each flowing cartoony image - but in the intensity of Daffy's feeling. The drawings aren't just there to be examples of good principles, they do that as a secondary result of expressing the emotions of the character. Like how the Space Program gave us Velcro.




Pure, beautiful cartooniness, yet all subservient to a greater purpose.

I think that the closer animation gets to superficial "realism" the faker it looks. Do these look remotely "believable"?
Not as believable as if they just shot the actual actors.

This has been demonstrated over and over again in our history - going back to Snow White. Everybody (even then) loved the cartoony Dwarfs and noted the complete incongruity and stiffness of Snow White and the Prince. Well animated cartoon characters are far more "believable" than "realistic" mannequins.

...Yet the people who have stolen the medium away from the cartoonists keep making the same mistake. They can't let go of the impossible dream of making animation not be be magic. They are all ashamed to be stuck in our world and hope that by imitating realism they might get invited into the more respectable world of live action. Has anyone noticed that that has hardly ever happened? Tim Burton is about the only person who has made the transition and he is a cartoonist - not a "writer" or executive or producer type.

The Cute Way To Offend Delicate Sensibilities

Bob Clampett once told me that he had a secret for getting away with material that would normally offend everyone. He said he tried to make even his most shocking material all upbeat and cute. It works for me!
Bob always made his animation very specific - like this odd upshot of Daffy's beak as he walks into the scene. Why an upshot? Because it's more interesting than just having him walk in for the mere sake of story continuity.
Here's all the principles of animation in action, only exaggerated more than the other directors. Bob's actions have a lot more punch to them because of this. Stronger accents, which help make the actions clear. - especially important when there is so much happening so fast in his cartoons.



This has the makings of a really gruesome scene. Mr. Meek has to bring home a duck for dinner or "Thweetie Pie will cook my goose!" Here's this mild mannered guy only too ready to enact the most brutal death upon a cute character with a giant axe.
Watch the animation in the clip of Meek slicing his axe through the hay trying to cut up Daffy. It's amazing.
This next scene is by Scribner. HUGE accents. Look at that beak!


One of the things I love about Clampett's cartoons is that I'm always discovering new gags and details I missed before. I've seen this cartoon 100 times and I never noticed that Daffy is ripping his feathers off and tossing them into the air along with the bloody ketchup.
This gag just kills me. I can't believe this was in a cartoon made almost 70 years ago.


Back to super cute Daffy.

Then more screaming and squirting blood everywhere.

I just noticed that Mr. Meek shoves his finger into his nostril. Never saw that before either.
Clampett cuts away from super exaggerated Scribner to another milder animator.
But this is a very funny expression and action coming up.

This may be Art Babbit's animation; I'm not sure. It's very round.

Look how Goddamned weird this is.


You can't have enough blood and feathers in a Clampett cartoon.
I think he gets away with this stuff because it's just so exaggerated you can't possibly take it seriously.
You see if you tried to do a scene like this today, some exec would read a script: "Daffy squirts ketchup all over the place and tears his feathers off and shoves his head deep down into his neck sheath, making it look like he is a chicken with his head cut off." Even if it made it past the exec and into production, if you didn't have a really strong funny director following the scene through production, chances are an artist would draw it too straight - and then it really would look gruesome. The key to successful violence in cartoons is to make it obviously ridiculous.
OK, you gotta watch this animation in the clip too. It's Scribner again and he animates some of the funniest and best acting ever in a cartoon here.
First Daffy flops around like a chicken with its head cut off.

Then he gives us a cute goofy look to tell us "It's just a gag, folks, I'm not really dead!"
Then into another frenzy...

and then it switchs to Daffy begging Mr. Meek to save him. All in pantomime. And without a head!
Unbelievable.
The idea that a director and the best animators in the world would go to such trouble and skill for such a simple gross idea, makes the whole scene 10 times funnier. - that they thought the gag was so important, it needed virtuoso execution.

Watch how he twirls around while walking around the corner. Such humor, deftness and control!


A CUTE FLUFFY DUCK GETS DECAPITATED AND DIES SCREAMING IN A BLOODY FEATHERY FRENZY

Wow. This scene is a complete animation opus and should be in all the history books. They should have piled Academy awards on Clampett and Scribner.

The funny part is, the story itself is a pretty routine WB plot. It's a stock heckler story like a Woody Woodpecker cartoon and Bob could have just thrown it away and not paid any attention to it, but he didn't. His meticulous direction turns the stock story into a complete caricature of what a "Looney Tune" is - it's almost a satire of the formula - and it becomes art.
