I actually like sketching on newsprint doodle pads most but I ran out a few days ago so reverted to lined yellow pads.
You know I tried looking all over for writing pads that don't have lines on them but they are really hard to find. They used to be quite common but seem to have gone almost extinct.
I've been in a bit of a creative slump since being cooped up by the coronavirus lock down so I took a few days off from sketching.
I just picked up again yesterday. Here are some doodles I drew while watching Fareed and eating bacon this morning:
I hope you are all safe and sound.
There might be more recent drawings on my Instagram and/or Facebook pages.
I watched a beach movie the other day. It starred Dolores Hart and I wanted to caricature her.
It also starred Yvette Mimieux who I wasn't as familiar with.
She, like Dolores, has a very unique specific look. Certain features struck me.
The next morning I tried drawing them from memory.
I didn't capture Dolores (the 2 on the right) very well at all. I tried Yvette - it doesn't totally look like her since I wasn't staring at her head in front of me, but I got some design ideas out of my faulty memory anyway.
The most notable features I remembered were:
A very angular Head Shape. Almost a tall rectangle.
Wide sad eyes.
A nose shape like a little bell.
A big wide smile.
A short chin.
My first sketches were conservative but when I did some more they got a little looser and simpler.
I also remembered her unique proportions:
A thin torso.
Very wide hips in contrast.
Long legs.
I like doing caricatures because I discover new features and shapes I can apply to character designs so that they don't all follow a standard animation design pattern.
I just googled her and see where I missed some facial features.
I'll take another stab at it later.
Here are some Sody breakfast doodles.
And a few other gals.
This one I saw on a news show. I liked her head so did some studies.
And this gal says good night all.
I watched a Merle Oberon movie Friday night. She's very pretty but not in a conventional way.
The next morning I tried drawing her from memory.
The thing that stood out most to me about her unique features was her high bulgy forehead. The 2nd most noticeable feature was that she had a very small mouth and chin.
I missed some other of her specific features though and the cartoon from memory didn't look like her.
I thought I'd look at some images online to see if I could better understand her details and draw a more accurate cartoon of her.
Eyes
In the memory drawing I totally got her eyes wrong.
I studied her eyes to put into words what was unique about them.
They are kind of small.
They are wide apart.
They are almond shaped and slant upwards on the outsides.
Nose
She has a long thin nose that flares at the bottom.
Mouth
Her mouth is small compared to her facial shape.
It is very close to the bottom of her nose-hardly any space between them.
Her lips are very shapely.
Her upper lip is widest towards the outsides of her mouth.
Her lower lip recedes from her upper lip.
Forehead
Her forehead is much smaller visually in relation to her wide cheekbones, yet her hairline is very high.
She has a noticeable bulge in the middle of her forehead and wears her hair to accentuate it.
My first attempts to draw her from photos are hesitant and stiff as I concentrate on trying to turn my analysis into action.
By the time I finished breakfast they were getting a bit looser and more caricatured but I still have a ways to go.
